4-H Materials & Record Books

All 4-H projects have some type of materials

associated with them. Many projects have several

manuals. These manuals are given to first year

members at no extra cost and must be kept for

the member to use for each additional year they

take that specific project. These materials are

often expensive, so to avoid high enrollment fees,

materials are often reused. Replacement

materials must be paid for by the member if

original materials have been lost.

The exception is the project record book. Each

year, members must complete a new record book

for each project. These are now available through

ZSuite at: https://4h.zsuite.org/. Families need

to create household accounts on ZSuite and then

each member adds their own profile for their

projects. Blank record books can be printed from

the website template once added to the respective

member’s profile.

Also, leaders are responsible for ordering the

appropriate materials for each member in the

project. Call the extension office or email Blair at

bgeiger@uidaho.edu to order materials. Material

order forms can also be found on our website at:

Spring is Scholarship Application Time

The following Scholarship opportunities are available to 4-H members:

Bonner County 4-H Leaders Council Continuing Education Scholarship—Must be enrolled in 4-H and have completed 4 years in 4-H and be a high school senior. Application deadline is April 10th.

O. M. Plummer Memorial Scholarship—Must be a 4-H Livestock member and have competed in livestock showing beyond the County level. Application due by December 15th.

Bonner County Cattlewomen and Cattlemen Scholarship of $500 —Available in Bonner & Boundary County. Must be currently enrolled in College with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Applications accepted at anytime. Preference given to students pursuing agriculture/livestock careers.

Shooting Sports Training Scheduled for April 18-19, 2020 in Coeur d’Alene

The Northern 4-H District has planned a training session for any 4-H Leader who may be interested in becoming certified to lead a shooting sport project or who would like to take a refresher course or add a new certification for another project. Archery, Hunting, Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun training opportunities are all available this spring at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds on April 18th and 19th. A summarized schedule is provided below and the full schedule can be emailed to you by request.

Small Animal Leaders Meeting—May 20, 2020 @ 6 PM/Extension Office

If you are a project leader for Rabbit, Poultry, Dog, Cat, or other small animal projects, please plan to

attend the Small Animal Leaders meeting on Wednesday, May 20 at 6 PM. We will be planning the annual

Small Animal Field Day and the Small Animal Judging Contest. The Small Animal field day is usually held

on a weekday evening in the month of June and includes activities/learning stations that relate to cat, dog,

rabbit and poultry projects. We also will hold the Small Animal Judging Contest, which is a Fair event with

ribbons awarded. Please attend and help plan a great Small Animal Field Day and Judging Contest.

Project Requirement & Record Book Reminders

Each year as spring arrives and the 4-H projects move into high gear, it’s important to take a moment and review

the requirements for each project. The University of Idaho 4-H Youth Development Program puts out specific

guidelines and requirements for every project. These requirements can be found online at

https://www.uidaho.edu/extension/4h/projects and are also available at the Extension Office. Each year, leaders

should receive a colored piece of paper that has the specific project requirements for the project they are leading.

It is important that each leader share these requirements with the members so they have clear

expectations for the project year and know what they need to accomplish in order to complete that

project. The project requirements vary from project to project, but there will always be a record

book requirement along with some sort of exhibit requirement. In addition, if you are exhibiting at the

Bonner County Fair, it is always a good idea to review the fair book and familiarize yourself with additional rules

and regulations that may be implemented at the county level. Don’t wait until the week before Fair to

work on your record books. If you have questions about your record books, please ask your leader or call the

Extension Office. Recording information in a record book on a regular basis is especially important for Livestock

projects. For “Quality Assurance” purposes your livestock record book must include an accurate record of every

medication, wormer, or vaccine your animal receives and the date given. The record must be detailed—don’t just

write wormer —record the exact type of wormer given.

County Demonstration Day April 18, 2020 at the UI Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center/scheduled time slots—starting at 9 AM

4-H Demonstration Day is the best way for 4-H members to practice and work on their public speaking skills. The

Bonner County Demonstration Day will he held on April 18th at the UI Sandpoint Organic Agriculture Center with

scheduled time slots starting at 9 AM. This event allows members to deliver a presentation in front of judges and

receive a ribbon. Members may do a Demonstration, Illustrated Talk or a Speech.

Topics can be related to Horse, Agriculture (Livestock), or other 4-H project topics. If using a visual aid, keep

them neat and readable from a distance of 20-25 feet. It is best to use white or light colored backgrounds. Also,

become familiar with the judging criteria, which includes the following:

Your Opening/Introduction

Your main points (purpose of your presentation)

Visual Aids used if doing an Illustrated talk or demonstration

(a demonstration must actually show how to do something.

Your appearance, attire, poise and confidence (dress appropriately)

Your topic summary (be sure to review/your main points in the summary and take questions)

Timing of your presentation—Juniors 5-15 min./Int. 5-15 minutes and Seniors 7-15 minutes

When the presentation is over, it’s time for questions. Be sure to repeat the question before answering. If you don’t know the answer, it’s always best to be honest and let the judge know you will have to look up the answer.

The Demonstration Day registration form is on page 7. Participants must pre-register by April 8th. Please fill

out and return the registration form or call Mary at 208-263-8511 to reserve a time slot and let me know your

topic, or email registration information to me at mokennedy@uidaho.edu. Also let me know if you prefer an

early morning, mid-morning, or early afternoon time slot—I will try to accommodate requests. The Sandpoint Organic

Agriculture Center is located at 10881 N. Boyer—just a little over half a mile North of the Extension Office.

2020 4-H Horse Show

The dates for the 2020 4-H Horse Show have been scheduled! The Horse Show will be July 18th and 19th. Horse Gaming will take place Saturday evening under the lights. The Awards Ceremony will follow the last classes on Sunday. You must submit your horse ID’s by April 1st to be eligible for top awards. Please call or email Mary if

you can help run a gate or be a ring steward. Volunteers are needed!

Hippology and Horse Judging Contests

The Bonner County Hippology Contest will be held at the Extension Office

on Tuesday, April 21st at 5:30 PM. The Hippology Contest challenges your

knowledge of the horse industry and equine management practices.

Horse Judging will be held at the

Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 2nd. Please

pre-register for one or both contests by calling

The District Horse Bowl will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at Moscow Middle School, (1410 E. D St., Moscow, ID) at 8:30 AM.

HORSE CAMP 2020 Bonner County 4-H Horse Camp is scheduled for June 22—26. The Sign-up day will take place on April 8th at the

Extension Office. Horse Camp Scholarship Applications must be completed by parent/guardian of the member

applying and must also include a letter from the 4-H member explaining the financial need for scholarship funds.

Scholarship Applications are due to the Extension Office by April 1st with Horse ID’s. You may show up at the

Extension Office as early as 8:30 AM on April 8th to get a registration number and then leave (you may only pick up for

your family). Actual Registration will begin at 4 PM with the lowest numbers being called first. Horse Camp

Orientation will take place on Monday, June 8th at 6 PM in the Indoor Arena. The Horse Leaders will host another

Horse Gaming Day on June 27th—the day after Horse Camp ends . You and your horse can stay one more night at the

Fairgrounds for free and join the Horse Gaming Day.

Market Livestock Requirements Please refer to this information when preparing for spring weigh-ins and when striving to meet a finished weight by Fair.

Beef: Ownership of animal for 150days/130 days on feed is required/born after January 1st of the previous year, as verified by proof of ownership document/bill of sale, presented at spring weigh-in. Bring money for the brand inspection ($2.96) and $1 for vaccination and $1 for wormer —exact change is appreciated. No Maximum weight at spring weigh-in. The minimum finished weight at Fair is 1,000 lbs. Members will be paid up to 1,500 pounds at Auction. Seasonal inspection for crossing state lines is $5.27 (exact change).

Swine: Ownership of animal for 100 days/80 days on feed required/born after January 1 of the current year. Bring a bill of sale to spring weigh-in and money for vaccination and wormer. There is no maximum weight at spring weigh-in. Minimum finished weight at Fair is 230 lbs. (Swine weighing more than 300 lbs. will qualify to sell, if they receive a red ribbon or higher, but will not be paid for any pounds over 300.

Sheep and Goat: Ownership of animals for 70 days/60 days on feed required. Sheep must born after January 1st of current year. Goats must be born after October 1st of previous year. No maximum weight at spring weigh-in. The minimum weight at Fair is 75 lbs. for goats and 105 lbs. for

Sheep.

Swine Weigh-In on May 16th from 8 am to 2 PM Due to the large numbers of 4-H members enrolled in the market swine project, we will continue to weigh in the pigs on a

schedule. Each club will receive a time when they are to arrive for weigh-in. If Swine Leaders have a time preference,

please email your preference to Mary by April 15th at mokennedy@uidaho.edu. Please adhere to the schedule to avoid a

bottleneck at the swine barn. Please also realize that despite scheduled arrival times, unexpected things happen.

Have your bill of sale ready in your vehicle. Each club must provide 2 adults or older teen volunteers to

assist younger members with their animals. Your club volunteers may weigh-in first (at your scheduled

time slot) and then stay to assist others until all of your club is completed. Club & Swine leaders should

recruit these volunteers ahead of time, so they are ready to help out. We will not start your club until

volunteers are present! This makes things much smoother and we were able to finish rather quickly last

year! Thank you!

Reminder—Any animal purchased out-of-state must have a health certificate presented at weigh-in. The health certifi-cate must come from the state of origin. Proof of Ownership/Bill of sale with animal’s birthdate is required even if the animal came from your own family farm. Bills of sale must have a date and address of the seller, to verify state of origin.

Remember to bring your bill of sale/proof of ownership document

to spring weigh-in. This document MUST include the birthdate of

your animal.

Idaho State Forestry Contest The Idaho State Forestry Contest will be held on May 14, 2020 at the Delay Farm in Careywood. Competitive events include: log scaling, timber cruising, tree and plant identification, map reading, compass reading & pacing, tool identification, soil and water quality, tree health, silviculture and noxious weeds. Every year, several of our 4-H Forestry

members of the Careywood Eager Beavers and Hoodoo Hustlers compete in this contest, coached by Adam Ackerman and Brian Hicks. Good luck to the 4-H teams and members. 2020 4-H Archery Contest on August 8th

The Fair Director has graciously offered the Outdoor Arena for the

4-H Archery contest again this year. This means we can offer

spectator seating in the shady grandstand for anyone who wants to

come out and enjoy the Archery Contest. The contest will begin

promptly at 9:00 a.m., although target practice will be available

for any shooter at 8:00 a.m. Some targets will be the traditional

bullseye on paper, and there will be a variety of animal fields

including 3-D foam animal targets. The contest will offer

opportunities for younger members and our beginner archers to

have more success, as some of the target distances will start at just

5 yards for our Junior members with a maximum distance of 15

yards. Intermediate distances will range from 10 to 20 yards and

the Senior distances will range from 15 to 25 yards. Some

members will use recurve bows, while others use compound bows.

Scoring will be done by volunteers at each of the 12 stations. Top

overall awards will be given for both bow types. Archery Awards

will follow the contest after a short intermission to allow time for

volunteers to tally score cards. The Range Masters will be Jason

and Rebekah Ham, Archery leaders with the Hoodoo Hustlers 4-H

Club.
