Habitat’s mission is “to work as God’s servants with people everywhere, from all walks of life to develop communities with

people in need by building houses so that there are decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and

can live and grow into all that God intends.”

Habitat in Henderson is a volunteer organization with no paid staff. Several of the core leaders in Habitat are members of First United

Methodist Church but volunteers come from many different churches and organizations. This March, Rev. Owen Ross and the youth group

from Christ’s Foundry United Methodist Church in Dallas will spend the week helping the Habitat crew. Volunteers normally build one

house per year and are currently working on home #20 in Henderson located at 300 North Mill Street. Dedicated volunteers work side by

home construction begins in October and is completed in late May.

Habitat homes are not free, but they are very affordable for low income families. When the construction on the home is completed, Habitat

sells the home to the family with the price being the actual construction cost of the home which is normally well below market value since

almost all the labor is donated as well as some of the materials. Habitat finances the home with a 15 to 20 year mortgage at zero interest. The

March Lenten Sermons

March 2nd

“Why Lent?”

(1 Peter 1:13-2:12)

The importance of growth and worship.

March 5th (Ash Wednesday)

“Narrowing the Gap”

(Matthew 4:1-11)

What we learn from Jesus’ temptations.

March 9th

Reverend Owen Ross will be with us today.

March 16th

“Your Will”

(Matthew 26:36-46)

The battle of wills in my life.

March 23rd

“Denier or Defender?”

(Matthew 26:69-75)

Do I suppress Jesus, or do I express Jesus?

March 30th

“Two Characters; Two Questions”

(Matthew 27:11-26)

Where does true authority come from?

Where does true peace come from?

What is Lent?

The pivotal events for the Christian are the

death and resurrection of Jesus. Through his

shed blood our sins are forgiven. Through his

conquering death we are assured of life eternal.

During the 4th century the Church developed a

season to help people prepare for these events

with the hope that they would take on greater

meaning. Based on the 40 days Jesus spent in

the desert in fasting and prayer, Lent invites us

into a season of prayer, self-denial, and

repentance.

We begin Lent with Ash Wednesday, March

5th, this year. Ashes remind us of a penitent

heart, as often we read in Scripture of a person

clad in “sackcloth and ashes” being repentant

or in mourning.

What is the goal of Lent?

This is the more important question. As Christ

followers our goal is always to become more like

Jesus. We want to embrace practices and

develop habits that help us in this faith journey.

Most of us grew up experiencing Lent as a time

of giving up something we really liked a lot so

we could experience a sense of loss in our lives.

To me Lent should be about growing closer to

Jesus Christ. Which is why I challenge people to

both give something up and add something in.

What I “give up” should be something that

hinders my relationship with Jesus. What I

“add in” should be something that enhances

that relationship.

May this season touch our hearts richly.

David

UM ARMY Coming This Summer

We are pleased to have a UM ARMY group coming to stay at our church July 13-19. We are hoping to have several groups in our church provide a meal for them. If your class or group is interested in providing a meal, please contact Betty Tyson. Another thing that is new to UM ARMY camps, is that if possible, church members provide their homes for small groups to come Monday-Friday of that week to take their showers. There are 4-6 youth/adults in each group and they come for showers between 4:30 and 5:30. The only thing you would need to provide are the showers. They bring all of their supplies. They shower and then go back to the church. We need approximately 25 homes. If you would be willing to do this, please call the church and put your name on the list. If you have any questions, please call Betty Tyson.

LIBRARY LUNCH

Circle your calendars for Library

Lunch on March 11 at noon. We will

be discussing The Hiding Place by

Corrie Ten Boom. Many of you have

told me that you read this book years ago. The

story of one woman’s courage in the face of

horror is so inspiring.

“Here is a book aglow with the glory of God and

the courage of a quiet Christian spinster whose

life was transformed by it. A story of Christ’s

message and the courageous woman who listened

and lived to pass it along—with joy and triumph!

Come join in the discussion, even if you haven’t

reread the book. Our group always has a good

time. As always beverage and dessert will be

provided.

VISIT THE LIBRARY

Have you visited the church library lately? If not,

you might be surprised at the books, magazines,

music, dvd’s, etc. that are available for

checkout. Why don’t you stop in the next time

you walk by and see what is available. Remember

checkout is simple, there are no due dates so you

can take as long as you wish to read the book or

watch the movie. All we ask is that you

eventually return what you have checked out,

which brings up another point--look around your

house, under the sofa and on the bookshelf. If

you have any materials with a barcode sticker on

the back that reads FUMC Henderson, please

return to the box in the library. No questions are

ever asked, and someone else might be waiting on

the book, movie, etc.

Music Notes As we move into the Lenten Season we usually think of removing something from

our lives as a way of showing gratitude to our Lord. Many, however, also add

something new to their lives as a way of lifting their spirits to a new level of

spiritual maturity. With that in mind, I would like to renew my request to all of

you to be a part of the music ministry here at FUMC. The Chancel Choir is

preparing meaningful music for the celebration of Holy Week. This will include

services from Palm Sunday...to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday...to the

glorious celebration of Resurrection Sunday. This season is so very important to

those of the Christian faith. If you would like to be a part of these services, but

are not sure about joining the Chancel Choir on a permanent basis, then please

feel free to practice with us on Tuesday evenings starting at 6:00 pm in the choir

room. We will practice the music for Holy Week for the first 45 minutes. We will

take a short break and allow you to leave. We will then continue to practice for

another 45 minutes on service music leading up to and following Holy Week. Of

course, if you insist, we will gladly let you stay for the entire practice!!

Special thanks go out to so many this month…

Libby Davis and Ellen Holmes for their beautiful special music selections on

Feb. 16.

All of the Friends and C.H.A.M.P.S. leaders for helping with the children on

musical instruction.

J.T. Tyson, Annabelle Tipps, Mia Hay, Riley Foster, Molli Dickerson, Maggi

Dickerson, and Hannah Phipps for helping us begin a

Middle School Handbell Choir.

And, as always, each of you for your incredible support

of music at FUMC. Grace to you all…...Jack

Dear FUMC:

Thank you for paying all of the 2013

Conference and District Apportionments. You

are helping us share God’s gifts and our

blessings with people in need as we carry out

the mission of the church both at home and

around the world. We are grateful for your

faithfulness and support.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Although our prayer shawl ministry

group doesn’t meet on a regular

basis, the ministry continues.

In the past few months we have

given shawls to quite a few people

who were in need of a special

blessing.

Did you used to crochet/knit a number of years

ago? Are your skills rusty? Why don’t you dust off

those needles and become a part of a very meaningful

ministry. Contact Pam Brown at the church if you are

interested.

Many, Many THANKS!

The 2014 Super Bowl Sunday Chicken Spaghetti Lunch was a HUGE success once again. We wish to thank all of you who bought tickets and/or participated in any way. A special thanks goes to our spouses who are always willing to work where ever they are needed. The Lemons Sunday School Class graciously helps us set up the Great Hall for dining on Sunday morning, and we are ALWAYS so appreciative of them. Our wonderful church staff provided much needed support in many ways, and we are ever so grateful. Thank you to our wonderful, loving, and supportive congregation. In Christ’s love, FUMC Chancel Choir

First United Methodist Church,

Words can’t describe the gratitude that I have to each of

you for providing support and help during the loss of my

daughter, Teddi Smith. You have warmed my heart with

the many ways you’ve shown your caring and sympathy.

I am grateful and blessed for having such a loving church

family to help me during this difficult time.
