Dear Daughters, The Good Citizens Award and the American History Contest winners were such an inspiration at our last meeting. Since 2015 marks the 125th anniversary of Ellis Island as an immigration station, the students had to imagine themselves traveling through Ellis Island in 1892 and describe their experience to a cousin. The DAR Good Citizens Program winners were equally rewarding and our First Place winner Sabrina Chen, won District and State! Rachel, congratulations and thank you for your leadership. It is always a pleasure to hear from our very talented youth.
Our next program will be “Flying Tigers” by Ray Cosyn, historian. Most Americans believe that the war in the Pacific began on December the 7th 1941, the Day of Infamy, as it is known, when the Empire of Japan attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands. But the war actually began in the Far East in 1931 when the Japanese attacked and invaded Manchuria and later in 1937, invaded China. As a result of this invasion the Flying Tigers, a group of American volunteers who flew for China in its undeclared war against Japan, were created.
Yours in DAR service, Kim Worrall, Regent

The DAR Project Patriot Committee is working to increase DAR member awareness of the Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial located at the entrance to Arlington Cemetery. The Memorial is preparing to launch a new DAR Oral History Partnership Project, inviting chapters around the nation to collect and submit oral history interviews with military women who are DAR members. Each chapter is encouraged to identify and register their service at http://www.womensmemorial.org/Membership/reg.html, and thank all veteran daughters. Recently the DAR Service for Veterans Fund granted the WIMSA Memorial $5200 to replace their computers and software in preparation for this new project. Watching the movie “Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots” is a good way to share the story of women in the military and begin conversations within your chapter about participating in the Oral History Partnership Project.
