March is looking to be an exciting and busy month for Cst. Robin Cameron Education Complex staff and students. On February 12, we had our 1 st Annual Science Fair in which we had over 20 participants partaking in the event. Thank you staff and students for the work and presentations you gave to our judges. CRCEC will be sending three winners to the FSIN Science Fair in Saskatoon, SK on March 17, 2015. Mr. Bartsch will be accompanying groups and helping with materials, supplies and powerful presentation strategies. Winners include; (good luck representing our community!) “Cloud in a Bottle” Gr.5 – Ashton Okemaysim, Carter Seesequasis, Tristen Katcheech “Colourful Quicksand” Gr.6 –Kakishew Ahenakew “Electrical Potatoes” Gr.8 – Kisikaw Ahenakew, Roy Mike I would like to invite parents/guardians to our parent teacher interviews on Thursday March 19 beginning at 3:00pm-7:00pm. This is extremely important for parents and teachers to discuss what will happen between now and end of the school year. This is the last reporting period before placement of student in the fall. The final report card will be given out on June 24, 2105. March is celebrating Nutrition Month, we ask parents/guardians to express the importance of eating healthy and incorporating physical activity into daily lifestyles. Did you know? ▪ Cucumbers are 96% water ▪ Cucumbers age faster if stored with apples, melon, or tomatoes ▪ Cucumbers are actually a fruit ▪ A cucumber’s flavor comes from the seeds ▪ Cucumbers can be 20° cooler on the inside than the outside air ▪ Cucumbers are related to watermelon, pumpkins, and squash ▪ It takes 10-20 bee visits per flower to produce a cucumber ▪ One vine can produce 25-125 cucumbers All in all we have four months left in the school year and I would like to thank all the staff and students for the continued work and time in our commitment to education here on Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation. March Newsletter Message from the Principal: Tansi! March is looking to be an exciting and busy month for Cst. Robin Cameron Education Complex staff and students. Grade 5 Mrs. Sherry Gardipy- Ms. Kendra Sutherland Tansi! February was a very busy month. We enjoyed our Valentine’s Day Party and had a great winter break! All the students and teachers worked hard to complete the DRA reading tests. Way to Go! Perfect attendance for February: Lydia Anderson Kaydence Gamble Mallory Gamble Malayna Thomas A big shout out to KREEDON GAMBLE for not missing a day of school yet this year! Keep it up Kreedon! We have a lot of events coming in March. Keep an eye out for the calendar.

Grade 6 Ms. Lori Greyeyes- Ms. Desirae Cameron Hello from Grade 6!! WOW!!! It is hard to believe there are only four months until we are finished another school year. We are very busy and hardly notice how time flies by. February went by really fast. We are anticipating the Month of March as we are curious as to how March will arrive as either a lion or a lamb? Until next month…stay warm!!!

Grade 7 Mrs. Pam Sokol- Ms. Bernadette Cameron Hello once again form the grade 7 class, February has been a very busy month. We had a science fair that was engaging. Please ask your children to tell you about. My grade seven class did an awesome job. In Language Arts we are moving right along with our novel study ''Hatchet”. In the midst of learning we are completing our DRA'S-leveled reading. We go skating on Wednesday afternoons students have a great time for two hours. Fridays are skating day to. Monday March 2nd, a ski trip is organized to Table Mountain in North Battleford, this should be fun. Grade seven class is responsible for canteen for the month of March we plan to have a fun cake walk, the price is right, art board-parents please feel free to send donations for this fun afternoon. Donations such as box of pop -chips etc...to be used as a prize. Stay warm, so long from the grade 7 class.

Grade 8 Ms. Shanna Bear- Mr. Preston Gamble-Ms. Monica Cameron It’s March already? This year is going by so fast. I am noticing a lot of growth in my students. We are working very hard on our Math Program as well as ELA. Our DRA’s are close to being complete and our reading is progressing. We have started a new unit in ELA which is teaching the grade 8’s a wide variety of writing skills they can use in any subject. Our class will be hosting another school bingo on March 18th and will be starting our class canteen again on March 24th. I will be looking forward to seeing all the parents/guardians at the bingo. Grade 9 Mr. Aaron Gamble-Mr. Kyle Seesequasis The report cards are coming out on March 19, 2015 and Parent teacher interviews will be from 3:00-7:00 pm on that date. The Grade 9 students that have perfect attendance for February are: Trina Cameron, Sara Dreaver, Brandon Fox, Carson Gardipy, Kona Pine, Preston Smallchild and Caryssa Yazzie. Mr. Adam Bartsch (High School Mathematics & Science) Hello from the Sr. Science and Math Department! This past month has been a lot of fun. Students worked incredibly hard on science fair projects that made the science fair a gigantic success. I would like to thank all of the staff and community members who helped out with the science fair. Some students will be representing Beardy’s school at an FSIN science fair in March. I am already looking forward to next year’s fair. I know that it will be bigger and better than this year. The excitement surrounding science is slowly growing in this school and it is my goal to have a great program in a few years. Badminton at both junior and senior levels has been going well. For some reason weather has been an issue on Wednesdays resulting in a few missed weeks but as the season starts, I anticipate a lot of growth and improvement in our athletes. They are working hard to learn and improve their skills.

Ms. Anthazia Kadir (High School English Language Arts & Arts Education) We have begun gathering information for our stage production in keeping with Beardy's Day in May. We are asking members of the community for their help. If anyone has any stories they will like to share with us about Chief Beardy before after the signing of Treaty 6; we will be happy to talk with you. There is a meeting planned for March 4th at CRCEC in room 138 at 1:00 pm. The intent is to gather with the elders in the community to discuss the information the class has already gathered and have a time of sharing with the elders in the community so as to gather more data and stories for our script. Mr. Eyahpaise is the contact person for the gathering of the Elders. English classes are moving along. Students are making preparations and designing drafts for their first major assignment for the Semester, which is due March 19th. Drama club meets on Wednesdays 3:30 – 5:00 PM

Mr. Elwin Cameron (Physical Education & History) Tanisi Kiyawaw? Just some information to pass on to all you fine folks who send your child(ren) to CRCEC. It's already going to be March and we are now well into semester two. This semester I am teaching Science 10 in period one where we are looking at Motion and its applications; History 30 in period two where we study Canadian History and are currently looking at pre contact and explorers; physical Education 20/30 where we will be looking at Nutrition as March is Nutrition Month. Basketball season has come and gone and it's now Badminton season. No students registered for the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Track & Field Championships, so we will not have any representation from CRCEC. If you have any questions and/or concerns please contact the school at your convenience. Mrs. Inez Cardinal-Mr. Junior Eyaphaise (Cree Language & Culture Program)

Mrs. Bard Gardypie (Native Studies & Information Processing) It has been a very busy year so far. The school calendar is always full every month. The Food Studies students are going for a tour at Polytechnic in Prince Albert on March 5th. A permission form will be going home within the next few days. The Dance Troupe has a vision of traveling west sometime in May. We have this message we want to spread to these communities in British Columbia of empowering students First Nation schools by the power of song and dance. There will be a meeting for parents of the singers and dancers on March 11, 2015 at 5:30 P.M. at CRCEC computer lab. We encourage all parents to attend. Please keep encouraging your child(ren) to stay in school and do their best.

Ms. Cheryl Sutherland-Math Catalyst Program The Semester 1 LLI groups which I taught have come to an end. The four students in Grade 6 made reading gains of 2 - 2.5 years within a four month period. I am very proud of their accomplishments! I have completed testing the Semester 2 groups which I will be teaching LLI to as well. Their first official day of LLI will commence on March 3. Regarding the Math program, the SHAPE & SPACE strand begins for grades 5 -9 on March 3 and ends on March 19. The teachers will be administering a pre-test on the first day and then again on the last day to determine if their students have made any gains. The STATISTICS & PROBABILITY commences on March 24 and continues until April 2. Pre and post-tests will again be administered during that time period. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Ms. Maureen Dreaver-Literacy Catalyst Program Hello everyone. The month of February went by quickly. There is only less than 4 months of school left. The teachers from Grade 5-9 have been working on the DRA’s and getting them done by the end of the month. I want to give a big thank you for those teachers who have been doing a good job in completing them. And a huge thank you for the students for getting them done and trying their best on the tests. I have already seen some improvements in some students in their reading level. Until next time, enjoy March, will it come in like a lion or a lamb???

Cst. Robin Cameron Education Complex Severe/Cold Weather Policy

Beardy’s Education has reviewed the Policies pertaining to the School Busses and their scheduled routes in the event of severe or cold weather. The revised policy is as follows: Temperature -45 or Lower: o Beardy’s & Okemasis Bus Drivers WILL NOT make their normal bus runs o Schools WILL NOT be open and Staff & Students WILL NOT be required to come in on these days Temperatures -40C or Lower (with or without wind-chills): o Beardy’s & Okemasis Bus Drivers WILL NOT make their normal bus runs o Schools will remain open and students will still be able to attend school providing that the Parent and/or Guardian is able to drop-off and pick the student up on these days Temperatures ranging from -35C to -39C: o Beardy’s & Okemasis Bus Drivers will start their bus runs two hours later than usual and only providing temperatures and/or weather does not worsen for these days Please listen for Severe/Cold Weather Announcements – Updates as they pertain to the Beardy’s & Okemasis Bus Runs on:

FM Radio - MBC 88.1

AM Radio - CJWW 600 and/or CKBI 900 Temperature information will be based on information gathered from the Prince Albert and area Forecasts. The Coordinator of Student Services in consultation with the Education Director, School Principals and Bus Drivers will monitor temperatures and road conditions at 7:00am each morning and make a decision based on all of the information gathered. The Coordinator of Student Services will be responsible to provide any findings to the Drivers and/or above mentioned Radio Stations; it is the responsibility of the Bus Drivers to inform all families on their respective routes of any findings Parents and/or Guardians may check in with the Principal of their children’s school(s), or Education Offices to find out whether there will be any Busses running before or after school.
