2012 MERCEdES GL Today we can show the latest and most revealing spy photos of the upcoming 2012 Mercedes GL. For the first time we can see most of the front end, headlights and grille.

2012 AudI A6 AvAnTHere is the spy photo of the new 2012 Audi A6 Avant dur-ing cold weather testing in Northern Sweden.

2012 BMW 1 SERIES F20Our spies learned from a BMW special-ist that this prototype has the 2.0 liter Diesel engine and a new 8 speed auto box. We also suspect this car has the xDrive 4×4 system since it was testing together with a current 3 series xDrive, a new 3 series prototype with xDrive and an Audi A4 Quattro.

2012 PEuGEOT 208 The 208 will follow Peugeot’s new design with a smaller grille like the 508 instead of that gigantic grille found on the 207. Also notice the LED-day driv-ing stripe on the front lights and the extremely short rear overhang.

COvER STORY

Written by Lyndon Conrad BellThe State of the Art Just Got Better

10 Automotive Street Style | March/April 2011 | Cover Story: Mercedes-Benz CL550

Nicely updated for the 2011 model year, Mercedes-Benz has addressed the primary quibble we

had with the CL-Class, while introducing other improvements to make the car an irresistible package. The new sculpted hood and redesigned grille add sleekness to the car where it was bulbous before. The design is now completely cohesive and has at last achieved its full potential. Thanks to these adjustments, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class has become one of the most beautiful new cars on the road today. Its gracefully flowing lines and powerful stance emit an aura of class, exclusivity and capability.

Its all-new twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 produces an impressive 429 horsepower. But that’s nothing compared to its torque output of 516 ft-lbs at 1800 rpm! Remember, it’s torque that gets you moving and the CL550 4Matic

is good for a zero to 60 of 4.8 seconds. A seven-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode via steering wheel paddles conducts power to all four wheels.

As good as all of that is, it’s only a portion of the car’s charms. Those fortunate enough to travel in a CL550 will be treated to an experience almost beyond description. Rather than merely sit in this car, one luxuriates. The seats are nearly infinitely adjustable in every direction imaginable. They’re heated and cooled and massage and even automatically adjust their side bolsters to hold you in place when the car goes around a turn.

Page 13: March/April 2011

www.automotivestreetstyle.com 11

The seat literally hugs you.

Every comfort, convenience and safety feature currently available is included in the car. Night vision with pedestrian detection, blind spot detection, voice activation for audio, navigation and communications, an automatic opening and closing trunk, self-closing doors, the list goes on and on and on. In addition to all its other attributes, the Mercedes-Benz CL550 is, quite simply put, the state of the art luxury coupe.

And it goes over the road the same way. Prodigious at elevated highway speeds, while around town, the Benz flows graciously with minimal effort on the

part of the driver. On winding back roads, switch the transmission

and the suspension to sport mode, pilot

the Benz

smoothly, and you’ll find yourself tearing through curves at speeds that will leave you absolutely slack jawed.

The Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic has the grace and craftsmanship of the finest mega-dollar rides, the electronic accoutrements of a technogeek’s wet dream, the speed and power of the most highly capable sports cars, and legs long enough to see you through a five hundred mile Interstate drive, capable of going five hundred more. And here’s the truly amazing part—there are

three, even more powerful engines available for

this magnificent automobile.

CELEBRITY GARAGE I

A woman whose combination of talent, tenacity, and beauty made her one of

Hollywood’s elite actors, Halle Berry’s success has come from years of hard work, while

enduring her share of career pitfalls.

Berry’s interest in show business resulted from her participation in a number of beauty

pageants throughout her teens, including the 1986 Miss U.S.A. Pageant. A native of

Cleveland, Ohio, Berry was born to an African-American father and Caucasian mother on

August 14, 1966.

Berry’s parents divorced when she was 4 years old and she was raised by her mother Judith,

a psychiatric nurse. At 17, Halle appeared in the spotlight for the first time as the winner of the Miss Teen All-American Pageant, and

subsequently became a model. Her first professional acting gig was on the TV series

Living Dolls. Berry then appeared on Knots Landing before winning her first big-screen

role in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever. It was on the set of that film she first earned her reputation

for her full commitment to acting—reportedly refusing to bathe for weeks in preparation for

her portrayal of a crack addict.

Following her film debut,Berry was cast opposite Eddie Murphy in Boomerang as

the comedian’s love interest. Holding her own against Murphy, the same year she did

critically acclaimed work in the title role of the Alex Haley miniseries Queen, playing a young

woman struggling against the brutal conditions of slavery.

STYLE

A new generation of car owners will hit the roads between 2011 and 2020, seeking their first set of wheels. In all likelihood, the highly educated, mobile, and tech-savvy age group that falls within the demographic known as Generation Y will want cars that are like them: urban, flexible, collaborative, environmentally sensitive, and unconventional.

Whether updating their Facebook pages or just texting and tweeting their location, Gen Y expects communication and connection to be as much as part of the driving experience as Bluetooth syncing a cell phone, or downloading a song from iTunes.

Herewith; Automotive Street Style’s Top Five Gen Y “cool whips”.

This semester, the National Guard has been traveling the country hosting free three-

on-three basketball tournaments for students on college campuses throughout the country. The program spent February 26 at UNLV where 143 students participated in the program, which includes the tournament, 3D gaming, and strength competitions. Basketball skills competitions include three point contests, slam dunk contests, and other basketball related activities. The students had a chance to speak with their campus National Guard recruiters about the benefits of joining the National Guard, while competing against their peers. Former NBA stars Tom “Terminator” Hammonds and Jerome “JYD” Williams were in attendance to encourage the students and give advice about both basketball and life decisions after graduation. “This was great event presented by National Guard, it is important for students to see the big picture and be exposed to various options upon graduation. Basketball is a great game for students to learn how to seize the moment.” Williams said.

Visit www.NationalGuard.com/basketball to see when the National Guard 3-On-3 Basketball program will be visiting your city.

Kevin Durant plays for the NBA’s Oklahoma

City Thunder. A 6’9” small forward/shooting guard who is also capable of playing power forward, Durant was 2007’s National College Player of the Year and the 2006–2007 Big 12 Player of the Year.

After his freshman season at the University of Texas,

Durant entered the NBA Draft, where he was selected second overall by the Seattle SuperSonics. Winning NBA Rookie of the Year Award after his debut season, in 2007, Durant signed an endorsement contract with Nike. In the 2009-10 season Durant led the NBA in scoring and became the youngest player ever to win the NBA scoring title. He would later be named

to the 2010 All NBA First Team.

Durant’s Matte Red 2011 Camaro? My GOODNESS! It’s just too sexy for words. While matte paint doesn’t go with everything, this one was customized with Celebrity Garage influences. With KD logos on the grill and wheel center caps, Durant brought the MVP out of this already stellar vehicle.

In fact, this project might well have been sneaker inspired.

COMMunITY

As part of the NBA All-Star game celebrations, NBA

Cares held a week long event with current and former members of the NBA family. Collectively, the group works on local community projects to leave the area a little bit better than when they arrived. This year’s events included building playgrounds, fitness clinics for teens, and planting of community gardens.JYD Project was thrilled to participate in the NBA Cares ‘Day of Service’ on Friday, February 18th. Our day began at Frederick Douglass Elementary

School in downtown Los Angeles. The crew, which consisted of approximately 200 people, helped the charter school in conjunction with an organization called KaBoom, to work on the most-needed projects. Our task was to build a large playground from scratch for the children of the school. Some teams poured the concrete for the playground, others built the jungle gym and monkey bars, and still others worked on projects for the school’s interior. We went to L.A. with my brothers Johnnie & Joshua, who

have supported the NBA program for more than ten years. Johnnie, Josh and I were assigned the job of managing the mulch for the project. We worked alongside NBA stars Robert Horry and Ron Harper. The WNBA was also on hand along with Olympic runner Marion Jones.Although the highlight of the week for many NBA fans was the All-Star game, the best moments for us involved giving back to the L.A. community. The playground we helped to build will be shared and prized by many families for years and years to come.

The most feared car on the road (for some) is about to be replaced. Ford’s old school Crown Victoria “Cop Car” is being phased out. Watch your back though, the all new 2012 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor is creeping up fast. The new Ford Interceptor will offer two powertrain options; a 365-horsepower twin-turbo engine with 350 pound-feet of torque or a 263 horsepower engine with 250 pound-feet of torque. Both options are more powerful than the current V8 engine of the Crown Victoria.

WORdS OF WISdOM

The season of renewal, rebirth and resurrection is upon us. From the shadows of wintery grey, cherry blossoms burst with shades of pink. Spring has finally arrived. And with this season comes the opportunity to find new life, joy and peace along with all of the sweetness of new beginnings and endless possibilities.

My beloved spoke, and said to me:

“ Rise up, my love, my fair one, And come away. For lo, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove Is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth her green figs, And the vines with the tender grapes Give a good smell. Rise up, my love, my fair one, And come away!”Song of Solomon 2:10-13
