Notes from the CAL President Lori Perry
With the arrival of March and the vernal equinox on March 19, it’s time
to shift gears and look forward to shedding winter coats and boots. My
personal harbinger of spring is the opening of the Lynn Drive-In Theater
in Strasburg -it’s a long haul for my husband and me, waiting for the
theater to re-open after the screen goes dark in late October. A Facebook
posting the other day confirmed that opening night will occur the first
weekend in April.
If you love movies as much as I do, you won’t want to miss our March
18th movie night meeting. After enjoying the work of Isabel Zaldivar
on “the wall,” we’ll watch a 75-minute documentary titled “The
Mystery of Picasso,” complete with popcorn and other movie snacks.
The door prize will be a carload pass to the Lynn Drive-In Theatre. Our
first two 2020 meetings have been very well attended. I hope you can
make this one – it’s guaranteed to be fun!
This highly rated film is a prelude to our summer bus trip to view the
upcoming “Picasso and Paper” show at the Cleveland Museum of Art,
featuring 300 works organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the
Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Musée National Picasso in
Paris. I’m working with the group tour coordinator and hope to
announce the date of this trip on or before our March meeting. The cost
will be reasonable, and will include a side trip to Little Italy. Quoting
an article on Cleveland Museum’s website, “Picasso’s relentless
exploration of working on and with paper is featured in the many

April - Georgia MacDonald
Georgia, a Canton native, is a
graduate of McKinley High
School and the Ohio State
University School of
Journalism.
Art has been a part of her entire
life but journalism became her
career of choice. She has
worked as a reporter and editor
at newspapers in Ohio; Kentucky; Connecticut; Virginia;
Washington, D.C.; and finally, Maryland.
While in Maryland, she became more active in the art
scene and expanded her interest from oil paints to
watercolor, acrylics and colored pencil. She won
numerous awards for her works.
After retirement, she and her husband returned to Ohio
to be closer to their son, brothers and sisters, and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She has entered several local art shows, and won two
awards in the first show she entered in Ohio: People's
Choice Award for an
acrylic painting and first
prize for a watercolor at
the Little Art Gallery in
North Canton in May
2016. She had her first
solo exhibit at the First
Row Centre for the Arts
in Greentown in 2017-
18. She is a member of
the Canton Artists
League and Ohio
Watercolor Society.
When my daughter was about seven years old,
she asked me one day what I did at work. I told
her I worked at the college — that my job was to
teach people how to draw. She stared at me,
incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?"
~Howard Ikemoto
March - Isabel Zaldivar
"My approach to painting is
loose and free, evoking
feelings, memories, or just
sense of beauty. Nature
inspires my work in abstract
and impressionistic ways. My
paintings can take many
directions, this gives me the
freedom to make decissions
in designing art composition. I enjoyed the process of
my work, alsways exploring, experimenting, and
composing different
avenues without
eliminating
recognizable imagry.
Plains and hills, rocks
and water, mountains
and cliffs, forests and
flowers are all
painted from memory
or imagination."

Exhibits at CMA
Stark County High School Art Exhibit March 25, 2020 - April 5, 2020
Art Exhibition features original two- and three-dimensional works by students, created as part of their school curriculums and chosen by their school’s art instructor. Over 100 works in various media will be on display by students from around 18 Stark County high schools.
A Portrait of Americana: American Life from the CMA Collection (April 27 - July 19, 2020)
Americana art reflects the charm and nostalgia of life in America. It portrays the history, traditions, artifacts, and culture of the United States - a unique slice of the American experience. Think of rural and street life, farms and factories, and the workers and families of America's history. Think also of football, fair rides, celebrity icons, and the statue of liberty - serving as a beacon of hope to many who would go on to shape American culture. Sometimes Americana art criticizes American culture, while other times it suggests a certain way of living, and a longing for those times that have past. This exhibit explores all of those themes and more, to create a portrait of American life. On display will be work by artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Moses Pearl, Dean Mitchell, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Vickrey, to name a few, all of which come from our permanent collection.
Patient Work: Watercolors by J.D. Titzel (April 27, 2020- July 19, 2020)
J.D. Titzel is a retired pilot who flew thousands of hours as captain on large three and four engine jets before retiring to paint full time for the past thirty years. During his career as a pilot, he was paired in crews of 3 and retirement left him alone with his painting for 10 hours a day. It took patience to adapt to the contrast in careers and his watercolor paintings are evidence to the result of his patience.
When he paints in watercolor, Titzel builds color slowly in very thin layers of paint. Some areas are 2-3 layers while others are attained in 10 or more layers. This gives the painting more depth than can be achieved by a single color. The average painting takes seventy hours to complete. However, he has taken close to 300 hours to complete a single painting.
Reflections: The Artistic Spirit of Merv Corning (April 27, 2020- July 19, 2020)
Symbolic Narrative: Ceramics by Taylor Robenalt (April 27, 2020-July 19,
2020)
