Vice President’s Report Greetings and welcome everyone to our first Newsletter of 2015.

Our President Di Lawrence has applied for leave of absence for a few months and I will be Acting President until Di returns.

ANZAC Day is fast approaching and this year being the Centenary year will entail a large presence of dignitaries, serving ADF members and ex-ADF personnel attending the Parade in Canberra. The WRANS -Naval Women’s Association (ACT) will be marching in the parade. Details of where we are meeting and our place on the parade will be detailed further on in this newsletter.

The booking our Events Officer made last year for this year’s ANZAC Day Lunch at Poppy’s Café has not been transferred to the new management and it appears they have no knowledge of the booking. The new management asked that as a result that we be seated outside the café. It also appears that the weather will not be kind to us and so it has been decided not to go ahead with the lunch. I am sorry this has occurred.

Provan Street, Campbell

The street sign for Provan Street, Campbell has now been erected on the street that is part of the new development on the northern edge of Constitution Avenue and to the east of Anzac Parade. Why this should be of interest to us, you ask. It is because the street has been named after Third Officer Frances Betty Provan (WR/1). Frances began training with the Women’s Emergency Signaling Corps founded in Sydney in 1939 by Mrs Florence McKenzie. By 1941 the Navy needed more wireless telegraphists and Frances was enlisted in the first intake of what was to become the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) with the official number WR/1. In April 1941 she was posted to the communications station in Canberra that was to become HMAS Harman, relaying messages to the fleet and with wireless stations around the world. She rose to Petty Officer Telegraphist before attending the first WRANS officers’ training course at Flinders Naval Depot, Westernport,

Victoria. Appointed Third Officer in February 1943 she returned to Harman in August. In June 1945 she was posted as officer-in-charge of the only draft of WRANS to serve in an operational zone, in Darwin. Postings followed in NSW and Queensland before she paid off from the Navy in October 1946. After a career in England managing a meat importing business she died in Brisbane in 1963.

MERLE’S BIRTHDAY – JANUARY 2015

Merle Hare turns 95

Life Member Merle Hare (nee Storrie) turned 95 on 20th

January 2015. Merle was the first Treasurer of our

association when we formed in 2003 and has remained an active member ever since. On 22nd

January, 15 members

and partners gathered to celebrate Merle’s birthday at a lunch at the Ainslie Football Club. The Association

presented Merle with a bunch of flowers and a card. Marian Schubert kindly donated a lovely cake decorated by her

son. We all had a slice for desert and there was still almost half left for Merle to take home. Merle enjoyed the day

and expressed her thanks for the flowers, gifts, cake and lunch.
