Lee, I hope that you had a good holiday season and that everything is ready to go for the spring semester. I wanted to connect with you briefly to let you know that we still have openings for new and/or recent civil engineering graduates here in our Dallas, Texas office. Attached is both our flyer and Bridge Designer opportunity position description for your use and distribution. Please pass the attached information on to any interest students and/or recent graduates. See http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg2.pdf and http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg3.pdf.

Additionally, I did want to offer one point to help your current and recent civil engineering students make more effective resumes for prospective employers. Over the years I have seen many new graduates make a single resume and apply to dozens of (or more) open positions at once. As it has become even easier these days to send and post a resumes electronically, it is becoming apparent as a reviewer of resumes that some applicants are hardly reading a position description. Consequently their resumes are quickly passed over because their experiences do not match well with the prospective employer’s position description.

I would suggest to your current and recent students to focus on quality as opposed to quantity when they apply for open positions. Instead of focusing on volume, focus on what an individual prospective employer wants (by reading the position description thoroughly) and determine if that is a possible fit for them or not. Then edit their base resume to align with every point and/or bullet in the position description prior to submitting that resume for the position. Taking time to understand the needs of a prospective employer will be noticed by those reviewing their resume, and subsequently almost guarantee a follow-up phone call.

Thank you for your help in this matter and I hope that you have a good day.

Matt

I am hoping you’re still the guy for this. I am the Operations Lead for Transportation in CH2M’s Dallas office, and we are looking to hire interns in both Houston and Dallas this year. Could you please help get the word out to CE students at A&M? If interested, they can send a resume directly to me at [email protected]. I have included a job description below, and am happy to answer any questions or provide additional information as necessary. The openings will also be posted on our website. I may be a little biased, as I began my career at CH2M as an intern several or more years ago, but I believe our corporate intern program and the culture within our engineering teams provide an exceptional opportunity for students with interest in pursuing a career in what we do.

2/24/16Hi Dr. Lowery,

I hope all is well at Texas A&M this year. Please forward the included job application link to your listserv of undergraduate Civil students, as HNTB is recruiting May 2016 graduates to fill positions within the Transportation department. This entry-Level Civil Engineering position will be a great fit for motivated EITs seeking experience with planning and design of large-scale infrastructure transportation projects. The scope of work may range from drainage design and signage planning to geometric highway design. Although I have only been working a few months, there is a clear emphasis here on the importance of continued learning for EITs in order to best prepare them for being successful and well-rounded PEs.

3/1/16Dr. Lowry,

I still remember going to your office half way through my Master’s in Philosophy to talk to you about getting a degree in Civil Engineering.  I am very thankful for your advice and I made sure I took you for as many classes as possible.  You never had to loan me a pillow for class… good times.

For me, over the last 15 years I have worked for just two companies.  I worked for a large firm up until October of 2014 and then I joined another Aggie and Lowry Fan in his company, ALJ-Lindsey.  Lester has grown the company from one person working out of his house to 13 staff and we are looking to add another Aggie to the mix.

I suspect we are late to the game for May but I thought I would reach out and see if you had any suggestions.  Are you still funneling student resumes to folks like us?

I hope you are doing well and that the A&M students are smarter and harder working than we are.  Either way, I hope they are learning as much as we did from you.

Dr. James,

You probably don’t remember me by name, but I went on the France ’99 program in Sceaux—I was in a language class and John Poston’s energy and the environment class. By the way, that program combined with Mike Rabins’ and Ed Harris’ Engineering Ethics course substantially contributed towards where I am now—a voting shareholder in a large, employee-owned firm in a national leadership position.

I am writing to let you know we are looking for 1-2 excellent geotechnical engineers that want to live and work in San Antonio, TX. While we do not yet have a job posting, if you could communicate to students in the TAMU geotech community that it would be good to send a resume to the attention of Human Resources at the address below, that would be helpful. Specifically, we would be interested in graduate students that have previous work experience—preferably in the San Antonio area or an area with clay soils. Outstanding undergraduates with substantial internship/coop experience may also be considered.

3/24/16Dr. Lowery, Good morning. I hope all is well with you and the CE department. I have an opening in my department for a Civil Engineer, and I was hoping that you could post the attached employment opportunity to your listserv. See http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Rinker1.pdf I also plan to post the position with the Career Center.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your assistance.

Wayne Hodge, P.E. (A&M Class of '91 - Civil Eng Grad) Director of Product Engineering Rinker Materials - Concrete Pipe Division 6560 Langfield Rd, Bldg 3 Houston, Texas 77092

Hi Dr. Lowery,

We are looking for two part-time geotechnical engineering interns for the summer. Would you mind informing the students? They will be working in the College Station office.

Thank you,

Alyssa S. Kieschnick | Director of Human Resources Gessner Engineering, LLCwww.gessnerengineering.com [email protected]

4/4/16Dr. Lowery,

During my time at Texas A&M (Class of ’05) I remember that you would pass along emails to the Civil Engineering students from individuals whose companies were looking for new EIT graduates. I was hoping you might do the same to help my company’s search for an EIT.

I work for Hayter Engineering in Paris, Texas (northeast Texas, population 25,000) and we are currently looking to hire a May or August Civil Engineering graduate. I have attached a job description as well as a brief firm overview. See http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Hayter1.docx and http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Hayter2.pdf

Page 19: Marco's Franchising, LLC, One of the Fastest Growing Pizza Chains

In my opinion, the biggest selling point for Hayter is the breadth of experience a new engineer will receive. Our clients come to us with a wide range of civil engineering challenges and it is left up to us to design an economical, lasting solution. Having started my career at an engineering/architecture firm with over 50,000 employees worldwide, I found it was very easy to become pigeon-holed. I wanted to expand my civil engineering skill set and have found Hayter to be the perfect company to do that.

Thank you,

THE FOLLOWING POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED

May 12, 2016Howdy:

NOTE: They have changed this to $10/hour.

The following is an unpaid internship offer, but before you dismiss it out of hand consider that

1) You can do it from anywhere, including at home this summer, or here at school while taking classes.2) You will get some excellent experience working under the guidance of a registered professional engineer.3) You will get an excellent addition for your resume.4) If you do a good job, the engineer you are working for will probably give you a professional recommendation when you go up for registration, not always an easy thing to get.5) If you do a really good job, you might request that it turn into a paid internship.6) If you do a fantastic job, they may well hire you upon graduation.

Downsides are obvious. The word unpaid stands out. If you do consider it you should carefully hammer out how many hours they expect you to work, and to see if you could devote that amount of time. There would certainly be no reason to get involved in such a project and then have them unhappy with your performance, even if it was free.

Lee, I hope that you had a good summer and didn’t end up working too hard. Things were busy on my end but good overall.

Since it is the beginning of another semester I figured it is a good time to let you know that we have openings for new and/or recent civil engineering graduates here in our Dallas, Texas office. Attached is both our flyer and Bridge Designer opportunity position description for your use and distribution (see http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg4.pdf and http://lowery.tamu.edu/announcements/Figg5.pdf. Please pass the attached information on to any interest students and/or recent graduates as you see fit. We have talked with and continue to talk with a number of great candidates from Texas A&M, and look forward to meeting some of them in October when we will be down in College Station.

Also, I wanted to ask if there was anything we could do to help you improve your classes? Initial ideas that come to mind are helping to facilitate construction site visits, or providing a short presentation or materials related to a specific course topics to help align engineering theory with real world design and construction. I’m asking because I’ve had a few inquiries about the projects we are designing in Texas now (will be a few years until the construction sites are bustling), and I can’t help but still remember my site visits to the precast plant as part of my concrete design class and the visit to the sewage treatment plant as part of my environmental design class. Something about “oh, that’s how it works” still sticks with me.

Thanks for your help and I hope you have a great day.

8/30/16Dr. Lowery,

I graduated in 1994, and am currently the Development Engineer in Richardson and have a job posting for a Graduate Civil Engineer (EIT). Could you assist me in finding some Aggie applicants?

The link below should take you to the City HR listing and I have attached the job description as well.

The posted job description is fairly bland, however, the position will be heavily into plan review and design, MS4 requirements, contracts, construction, grants, regional, state, and federal agencies, City Plan Commission, City Council and other municipal related work.

I could not get the position approved early enough to interview summer graduates, and am happy to wait for the December graduating class if need be.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Thank you for your help.

From: Jimmy Griffith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, October 31, 2016 10:44 AMTo: [email protected]: Unique opportunity for young civil engineer

Dear Dr. Lowery:

My firm has a unique opportunity for a young engineer (either graduating or with a few years experience). The position is available now but with the expectation that we will likely not be able to fill it until the end of the year or early next year.

I realize we are late to the game for any engineers graduating this Fall but thought it might be worthwhile to send you an email.

Page 51: Marco's Franchising, LLC, One of the Fastest Growing Pizza Chains

We do both Civil Engineering and Surveying (I am registered in both fields) and our work is diverse and includes subdivision and site development, water and wastewater treatment, hydraulics and hydrology including flood studies, economic analysis and feasibility studies, Edwards Aquifer reports and studies, and boundary line surveys as well as surveying for development.

We are, though, a very small firm. I am ready to shorten my work hours from60-70 hours per week to 40-50 and need a smart and motivated engineer who wants to work and learn the profession with the hope that this person begins to take over increasing loads in a few years and becomes the principal in8-10 years as I begin to transition out.

We finally have enough work load such that I feel comfortable offering a young engineer a position with the real potential found in small but growing firm.

Just a bit of background--after graduation from A&M in 1973 (BSCE) I joined our family firm, Everett Griffith, Jr. & Associates, Inc. and became the head of the firm two years later (1975) when my dad died. We grew from 12 employees at that time to 50 employees in 1983. That firm continues in Lufkin today but I moved my family to Round Rock in 1991 to pursue a Ph. D.with the hope of returning to A&M to teach. However, after finishing the M.S. it became obvious that I needed to return to the work place in order to put my four kids through college. I worked in the area of my masters work--Supercritical Water Oxidation--until 2002 (co-authored four patents) and then returned to more traditional Civil Engineering. I started the present firm in 2007 (perfect timing for the economic storm in 2008 and beyond). The firm survived and is now thriving.

We use AutoCad Civil 3D and Storm and Sanitary Analyis as the basic software in our design as well as most all of the other typical software, and we can train a young engineer in full computerized design. I would prefer if someone had some experience with CAD design and/or construction or surveying, but a willing mind and youthful energy should be adequate to allow a young engineer to become productive in a reasonable time frame.

We would expect to provide typical pay and benefits associated with the engineer's education and experience.

I am not sure what specific information would be helpful or if you have some particular format for companies to use to make themselves known to the graduating engineers. I would appreciate very much your assistance in allowing us to know of any engineers who might be interested in this position. As noted below, we are located in Round Rock, Tx. and have projects throughout central Texas as well as a few in South Texas.

Thank you very much for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Griffith '73
