Hobart City Mission Christmas Appeal

This year the Richmond Red Cross Branch, the Coal River Valley Garden Club and some

Richmond community members collected food items and toys to donate to the Hobart City Mission’s Christmas Appeal. We were overwhelmed with the amount of donations received, eight large boxes of goodies have been delivered.

Thank you to all those how supported us.

Richmond Red Cross President Judy Leisk, Richmond Community member Jan Ross and Coal River Valley

Garden Club President Julie Wiltshire, sorting out the many donations received for the Hobart City

Mission’s Christmas Appeal.

Southern Support School to Extend to Year 12

The Hodgman Liberal Government has a goal to lead the nation in education and create a job-ready generation of young Tasmanians and to achieve this we need more students to stay at school longer and remain engaged in education

A major component of our long term Plan for education is extending high schools through to year 12 and it is working, with a 57 per cent increase in enrolments at participating schools since 2014, and an improvement in our apparent retention rates now up to 74 per cent, up from a low 67 per cent under the previous Government.

Franklin Liberal MP Jacquie Petrusma has confirmed that in 2018, one of the eight recently-announced schools that will extend to Year 12 will be the Southern Support School at Howrah.

“This is great news for students who attend the school and their families,” Mrs Petrusma said.

“By extending the high school we ensure that students can choose to complete their senior secondary school education locally, recognising that there may be travel and finance barriers to students accessing college or other further education and training.

“Under this Government’s initiative, we are sending a clear message to the Tasmanian community that school doesn’t end in Year 10 as well as providing students with more choice about where to complete their senior secondary education.

“I want to congratulate the Southern Support School community for supporting the extension which will give students greater opportunity.”As previously announced, next year (2017) the following schools in Franklin will be extending to Year 12:

• Clarence High• Rokeby High Rose Bay High

“By getting the budget back on track we can continue to invest in essential services, like education, including extending schools to years 11 and 12 and through the new Education Act ensuring Tasmanian students get the same opportunities as their interstate counterparts,” Mrs Petrusma said.

Richmond Tennis Club News Summer holidays and tennis are a great combination. See the separate notice regarding the Free Tennis Day on Sunday 22 January -a fun day for both children and adults. Social tennis continues on Tuesdays (8:30-9:30 am) and Saturdays ( 2 pm onwards) through the summer. Courts are available for hire by non- members by contacting either the Glenns 6260 2403, Wadsleys 6260 2950 or Sue 6260 2210. The new lock system for the tennis courts begins in February. Make sure that your membership is paid up and that the club has your email address or you will not have access to the monthly lock codes. Our coach, Simon Garth, will be running coaching sessions over the summer break. He can be contacted on 0400 025 763 for more information or to arrange private coaching.
