“ROCK ’N’ ROLL COMICHARD-EDGED, SMART ANDVERY FUNNY” Time Out

Winner of the 2011 Olivier Award for Best Opera and Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Off-West End Production, OperaUpClose burst onto the opera scene back in 2009 with this fresh and brilliantly youthful production of Puccini’s masterpiece La Bohème.

Follow the ups and downs of idealistic students Rodolfo and Marcello and their girlfriends Mimi and Musetta, as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and follow their dreams. The comedy of the first half of this hugely popular production heightens its tragic ending, with audiences saying this 21st century version of La Bohème affected them like no other.

And Canadian superstar Tom Stade Totally Rocks! Join this “part devil, part dude” (Scotsman) direct from his smash-hit run at the Edinburgh Festival in this rollicking, carefree show; brilliantly mischievous and charming, frequently cutting close to the bone and packed with sharp and inventive observations. Twilight Song*

Rose Nicholls is a lady of 78 who has to enter residential care. Her daughter Sue, and grandson Gary have the unenviable task of clearing Rose’s house. Rose appears not to have thrown anything away since the mid 50’s.

Rose and Sue have always had an uneasy relationship, and Rose seems to blame Sue for everything. This play explores the effect on all concerned when someone enters residential care, including the staff and residents who have to adjust to a new arrival.

Running Time: approx 1 ½ hours (+ interval)Tickets: £10, Concs £8, Groups of 10+ £9Friends buy 2 get 1 FREE on Saturday

As Sue and Gary sort through a lifetime of hoarding, they discover secrets, and are able to get an insight into Rose’s life, which may explain some of her actions over the years. Through a series of flashbacks, the audience witness these events, in tandem with the present struggle with the inevitable.

Twilight Song is a thought provoking and occasionally hilarious play, demonstrating that situations, and people, are not always what they seem to be, and celebrates love...in life...and death.

There’s a beast on the moors, a crime to be solved, and with the Ha Ha team on the case – what can go right?!

You’d be absolutely barking mad to miss this pipe-smoking new show from theatre’s funniest parodists as Holmes and Watson embark on their most dangerous adventure yet ... hunting down The Hound of The Baskervilles.

It’s elementary! It’s also downright hilarious as comedic national treasure Joe Pasquale, direct from his West End run in Spamalot, takes on the role of Sherlock Holmes. As one of the UK’s top stand-ups Joe brings mirthful merriness to the proceeding, but will he be skating on thin ice?

Running time: 2 hours 20 mins (inc interval)Tickets: £20, Friends & Restricted View £18

Stewart Francis, Craig Campbell and Glenn Wool – the UK’S favourite Canadian comedians - will each perform a solo show as a rotating triple bill, as part of the hugely successful touring stand-up comedy tour The Lumberjacks. All of these Canucks perform their own set, side-by-side, on their debut UK tour of The Lumberjacks.Stewart, Craig and Glenn are at the top of their comedy game right now. They each have their refreshingly contrasting styles, but you can see them come together and perform their own uniquely individual material on the same night. With something here for everyone guaranteed, the audience is in for an eclectic and exciting show.

Ages: 16+ Tickets: £16

With writer Ben Langley as Doctor Watson and Andrew Fettes as everyone else, this sure-fire wonderfully ridiculous show is well worth an investigation.

Has the beast bitten off more than he can chew when confronted by our crime stopping team? Will Holmes find his deerstalker and will the deer be happy when he does? Stick some shag in your pipe and visit 221b Baker Street for the most gripping comic caper of the age!

Saturday 19th October - 7.30pmMelanie Wilson and Fuel present

Landscape IIBy Melanie Wilson.

Three women separated by a hundred years start a conversation across time. Their parallel experiences reveal shared imaginings of identity and escape, as menacing undercurrents steal into their solitary and reflective lives. Their letters, diaries, drawings and photographs expose a series of threatening episodes and unsettling occurrences. As the landscape presses in on them, they draw upon the threads that connect them to survive.

Landscape II is a compelling solo work by Melanie Wilson. This bold hybrid of performance, film and sound art creates a highly contemporary and minutely observed piece of new theatre.

When was the last time you laughed out loud in a post office queue; were inspired while waiting for the bus; or contemplated something beautiful because your mate was running late?

While You Wait is a series of podcasts, each of which is a different meditation on the idea of waiting created by artists, in collaboration with academics from King’s College London. Artists this season include Brian Lobel, Rachel Mars, The Company, Dave Price and Caroline Horton (bringing her show Mess to the Theatre Royal on October 11th).

You can listen to the podcasts for free on the While You Wait listening stations in the Circle Bar.

Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia.

He combines hair-raising vocals with inventive accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, guitar and bajo sexto - a twelve string Mexican acoustic bass - creating a distinctive hardcore Americana sound that ranges from the bare bones of solo unaccompanied singing to the lush, multi-layered arrangements on “Josh Billings Voyage,” his new album of northern roots American music.

A small crowd gathers to get a glimpse of the star on stage, but the girl at the stage door has more exciting things in mind…

In this intimate musical and theatrical performance Catherine Ireton takes a small audience through the secret world of the theatre using collected tales and a specially created set of songs.

There’s something magical about glimpsing into an empty theatre: a forgotten tale whispered in the dressing room, the ceremony of walking onto the stage, and the quiet hush when the curtain has fallen. Welcome to a world full of promise, of ghosts and quiet dramas. This is an exploration of the smallness of things, of letting go into the dark and walking into the light.

Dracula

“I can give you your forbidden, secret desire – the soft bitter touch of my kiss, the surrender, the chance to live and love forever.”

The time is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change. Poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging.

This brilliant, theatrical treatment ofBram Stoker’s adventure blends Victorian Gothic with the Contemporary. With specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances andan innovative design, this promisesan exciting and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

John Cooper Clarke+ Special Guests Mike Garry & Luke Wright

One of Britain’s best loved and most important poets and performers, John Cooper Clarke is as vital now as he was as the ‘Punk Poet’ or ‘Bard of Salford’ in the 1970s.

The revival of the 70s punk phenomenon over the last few years has seen a whole new generation clamouring over John’s work and watched his star rocket once again.

Tonight he performs new poems and monologues alongside his best known works such as “Beasley Street” and “Evidently Chickentown”.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall enjoy our panto and have a ball…

READ ALL ABOUT IT!We’re thrilled that two books have been written about the Theatre Royal and we’re pleased to say that both are available to buy from our Box Office – and would make perfect Christmas presents!

For the grown-ups:“A Short History of the Theatre Royal Margate” by Ian Dickie (Paperback) £3.99

Published in May 2013 to coincide with our first Party Day, Ian’s book is a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Theatre Royal, which dates back to 1787. The theatre was built during the mid-Georgian period and radically altered in the Victorian era, and is the second oldest working theatre in England - now Grade 2* listed. It has had a checkered history with time spent as a chapel, cinema, bingo hall and (very nearly) a furniture warehouse, but also happier times, such as a period when it was managed by celebrated Victorian actress Sarah Thorne, said now to haunt the auditorium.

Ian’s book is liberally illustrated with pictures of the building, its plans and its players and is a fascinating read for anyone captivated by this beautiful building.

And for readers of all ages:“The Positively Last Performance” a novel by Geraldine McCaughrean (Hardback) £12.00

The derelict Royal Theatre has seen better days. But then so have the ghosts who live there. Newly arrived in her favourite seaside town and its beautiful theatre, Gracie is quickly making friends. There’s Mikey the Mod, for instance, who wears a parka and drives a scooter, Miss Melluish whose skirt is missing, and Frank Stuart, the maker of mechanical elephants. But the old theatre is under threat. Will Gracie and its resident ghosts be able to save their home, or is the curtain set to fall on their very last performance?

Based on Margate, its people, places, and history, and written with the help of the townspeople. The Guardian said: “What a fantastic and inspiring idea to unite a community and a children’s author in this way. The Margatians must

be thrilled with this charming and skilful story, woven together from their fact and McCaughrean’s fiction.”

And we’re delighted that launching in February 2014, Margate Town Read will bring the whole community together to read, celebrate and enjoy this wonderful book. Imagine sharing this great story with your neighbour, hairdresser, bus driver and friends.

Check out the website for news and events www.kent.gov.uk/libs Both books are available for purchase through our Box Offices and can be posted to you for an additional charge of £1 (“A Short History of the Theatre Royal Margate”) or £3 (“The Positively Last Performance”). No Booking Fee applies.

Get Involved By Volunteering

•Good verbal communication skills

• The ability to use their initiative

• A high level of punctuality and reliability

• A passion for the theatre and its audience

There are lots of benefits to being a TheatreRoyal Margate Volunteer including selected complimentary tickets.

Get Involved By Giving

Sponsoring a seat in the Winter Gardens or Theatre Royal is a great way to support the Theatre; they make an ideal present, can be used to mark occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries or remember someone special who enjoyed happy times at the theatre. Your seat dedication on a brass plaque can be up to 10 words long and will remain on the seat for many years to come.

Call 01843 292795 for further details.

Regular and Annual Giving

Theatre Royal Margate currently spends thousands each year on the youth theatre and education projects in schools and the community. Some ideas of what your donation could support.

•£20 every season could help expand our programme to schools

•£5 a month could help a young person attend youth theatre for a term

• £100 could support a local primary school in attending their first show

• £500 could help us engage with new communities in the area

Gift Aid

Any gift, however large or small, will make anenormous difference to what we can do. If youare a UK taxpayer you can even Gift Aid yourdonation. This allows Theatre Royal Margate toclaim back 28p in every pound you donate fromthe Inland Revenue, at no extra cost to you –helping your donation help us even more.

Inspiration Inclusive (8-18yrs)

This group meets every Tuesday (5.00-6.50pm)during term time, and all are encouraged to break down the usual barriers of communication by learning some sign-language; working in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each otheron and off stage so that no-one is ever left out.

We believe the only label for our group is ‘Multiabled’ We all have skills and potential, and togetherwe can all realize our dreams - and as the name suggest EVERYONE!

Led by Zoe and Peter Hammond alongside a large team of volunteers, all sessions are BSL signed. Members work towards a professionally supported show performed in the Theatre, the latest being A Grimm Affair this July.

Term time only: £2.00 per session (voluntarysubs), limited places.

For more information about the group please email: [email protected] or call 07792 684227 or 07792 684240. Further information on the Theatre Royal website.

Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director (who runs and leads the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre) says “As a practitioner I am interested in using theatre spaces as dream spaces. I don’t buy the realism and push for naturalism in theatre; the stage should go beyond the day to day, creating worlds that can only exist in the imagination. This totally influences my work”.
