"Health status of a prehistoric population from Rio Verde, Oaxaca, Mexico": Rio Verde

Formative Project, Directed by Marcus Winter of the Instituto Nacional de Antropologia

e Historia, Mexico, and Arthur Joyce of Rutgers University.

- Conducted and Supervised controlled excavations at the coastal site of Cerro de la

Cruz, Oaxaca. Analysis of skeletal material performed at the Instituto Nacional de

Antropologia e Historia, Oaxaca. Research funded by Sigma Xi and Explorers Club.

Field Season Dec. 1988- February 1989

Conducted preliminary osteological investigation on a prehistoric population.

Investigation conducted in a joint effort with the Museo Arqueologico of La Serena,

Chile. This analysis is the first phase of the project "Health and Diet of Two Prehistoric

Populations from Chile's Semiarid North".

Field Season July 1989- May 1991

Phases II, III, and IV of Project: "Health and Diet of Two Prehistoric Populations from

Chile's Semiarid North".

Participated in excavations of a Diaguita-Inca cemetery (approx. 500 BP) at El Olivar,

La Serena, Chile. Excavations directed by Gonzalo Ampuero, Director of the Museo

Arqueologico. Paleopathological analyses on Diaguita skeletal material. Research partly

supported by the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Rutgers University Travel

Grant.

Participated in excavation of Diaguita Classical site (approx. 1000 BP) at San Miguel,

Ovalle Limari, Chile. Excavation directed by Gaston Castillo and Marcos Biskupovic,

archaeologists at Museo Arqueologico. Excavation funded by Sigma Xi.

Phase IV of project was conducted from September 1990 to May 19991 at the Museo

Arqueologico, La Serena, Chile. In this time a minimum of eighty skeletons of persons

representing the Diaguita cultural period (500 BP-800 BP) and a minimum of 100

skeletons of persons representing the Archaic period ( approx. 4000 BP) were analyzed in

terms of age, sex, non-metric genetic markers, and pathologies. Also, measurements and

X-rays were taken. Investigation funded by Explorers' Club and National Hispanic

Scholarship Fund.

Field season, July- August of 1996.

Continuation of research titled "Health, Diet, and Trace Element Analysis of Two

Prehistoric Populations from Chile's Semiarid North." Began preliminary

paleopathological analysis of thirty human skeletons of the Late Archaic period site

Guanaqueros (ca. 2000 years BP). Participated in the excavation of the Early Archaic

period settlement La Fundicion (ca. 7000 years BP) at El Durazno, Valle Elqui, Chile.

Excavation directed by Gaston Castillo archaeologist of the Museo Arqueologico of La

Serena.

Field season, June-August 1997.

At the Museo arqueologico of La Serena, La Serena, Chile continuation of research

titled "Health, Diet, and Trace Element Analysis of Two Prehistoric Populations from

Chile's Semiarid North." Begin demographic analysis and continue with

skeletons of the Diaguita-Inca Period (ca. AD 1450). This is the first phase of the new

project titled "The Archaeology of Gender of Diaguita II and Diaguita-Inca Populations."

Began preliminary tombstone analysis of the Cohansey Old Baptist Cemetery in

Hopewell, New Jersey. This is the first phase of the new project titled "Archaeology of

the Old Baptist Cemetery: typology, genealogy, and preservation."

Field season, June-July 2000, with Heather Schiffer, Rowan University Geography

At the Museo arqueologico of La Serena, La Serena, Chile continuation of research

titled "Health, and Diet of Two Prehistoric Populations from Chile's Semiarid North."

Began preliminary demographic analysis of skeletal remains excavated from

archaeological site Puclaro, IV Region, Chile.

At the Museo Del Limari, Ovalle, Chile: sex and age determination of twenty skeletons

of the Diaguita-Inca Period (ca. AD 1450). This analysis also begins the first phase of

the new studyt titled "The Archaeology of Gender of Diaguita II and Diaguita-Inca

Populations."

applied to archaeological sites Puclaro, Punta de Piedra, and La Herradura.

July 3- August 7, 2001, conducted conservation and paleopathology (dental and skeletal)

research, at the Museo Arqueologico of La Serena, Chile, on archaeological skeletal

remains of the Diaguita culture Phase III (ca. 500 years ago) of Chile’s semiarid north,

site Punta de Piedra. Two Rowan alumna and Geography majors, Heather Schiffer and

Stacey Lodge, accompanied M. Rosado in July of 2001 to Chile and participated for a

month in the conservation research at the museum.

Begun paleopathology analyses of skeletal remains of Archaic period peoples of the site

Guanaqueros and La Cantera (ca. 3000 years ago), Chile’s semiarid north.

March 2002, completed the first phase of gravestone descriptive typology analysis of the

October, 2002 invited by the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church,

Woolwich Township and the Historical and Educational Lodge-Hall Preservatory, Inc.to

conduct descriptive typology gravestone analyses of the historic Mount Zion African

Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Woolwich Township, Gloucester County. Co-

investigators in this research are Elaine Edwards, Historian of the Historical and

Educational Lodge-Hall Preservatory, Inc. and Kristy Lewis, Rowan University Junior

and History major.

July 6-19, 2002 excavated the site of Punta De Piedra, a Diaguita phase III period,

Chiles’ IV Region. One Rowan alumna and Geography major, Heather Schiffer; and

three Rowan undergraduates, Kristie Lewis, Amber Peterson, and Kate Divaccaro

participated in the excavation.

July 20- August 5, 2002, conducted conservation and paleopathology (dental and

skeletal) research, at the Museo Arqueologico of La Serena, Chile, on archaeological

skeletal remains of the Archaic Period culture of Guanaqueros (ca. 3000 years ago) of

Chile’s semiarid north, site Conchal las Cabinas. One Rowan alumna and Geography

major, Heather Schiffer; and three Rowan undergraduates, Kristie Lewis, Amber

Peterson, and Kate Divaccaro accompanied M. Rosado in July of 2002 to Chile and

participated for a month in the conservation research at the museum.

July.

June 7-July 11, 2004, completed a demographic, anthropometric, and osteological

analysis on human skeletal remains representing the Archaic period of the site

Guanaqueros. Conducted a zooarchaeological anlysis to identify marine animals

uncovered at the Archaic period site Guanaqueros to infer human diet. Excavated the

rockshellter known as Casa De Piedra at the site El Marai, Molle Culture, Andes of the

IV Region. Amber Peterson, Lori Gilliam, and Stephanie Blough, Rowan University

students, accompanied M. Rosado to Chile and participated for five weeks in these

endeavors and in the conservation research at the Museo de La Serena, la Serena, Chile.

July 7-August 5, 2005, completed a demographic, anthropometric, and osteological

analysis on human skeletal remains representing the Diaguita period of the site La

Serena. Explored, surveyed, and mapped the site known as Lo Morros, Molle Culture,

Andes of the IV Region. Elizabeth Rodriguez, Jessica Levin, and Jessica Mullen, Rowan

University students, accompanied M. Rosado to Chile and participated for five weeks in

these endeavors and in the conservation research at the Museo de La Serena, la Serena,

Chile.

July 4-August 2, 2006. Accomplished at the Museo Arqueologico de La Serena, La

Serena, Chile the analysis on Intentional Cranial Alteration (ICA)in Diaguita skeletal

samples (dated to 600 years before present) of Chile’s semiarid north. The analysis was

accomplished via visual identification of ICA type,detection of ICA through

Rowan University students Craig Graham, Kim Cuccia, Keisha Pierre-Louis, Adam

Capel, and Chris Barton participated in the analysis and collection of data on ICA.

remains representing the archaeological sites of Penuleas.

May 27- June 23, 2007. Accomplished at the Museo Arqueologico de La Serena, La

Serena, Chile the analysis on Intentional Cranial Alteration (ICA) in Diaguita skeletal

samples (dated to 600 years before present) of Chile’s semiarid north. The analysis was

accomplished via visual identification of ICA type, detection of ICA through

measurements of specific cranial bones affected; and comparison of measurements in

individuals with and without ICA conducted. Completed a skeletal registry that identifies

the minimum number of individuals excavated per site and time period, and conducted

conservation and paleopathology (dental and skeletal) research on human remains

representing the archaeological sites of Punta De Choro and Andacollo. Collected bone

samples of human and animal skeletons for: (1) chemical analysis to reconstruct

nutritional status via the identification of trace elements, and (2) microscopic analysis of

first level histologic structures for forensic identification of human vs. animal trabecula.

Dec. 27, 2008- Jan. 17, 2009. Accomplished at the Museo Arqueologico de La Serena, La

Serena, Chile the analysis on trauma of Diaguita skeletal samples (dated to 600 years

before present) excavated from the site Penuelas- CONAF, of Chile’s semiarid north. The

analysis was accomplished via visual identification of trauma type, descriptipn and

measurements of trauma type, and determination of bones affected. Completed a

skeletal registry that identifies the minimum number of individuals excavated at the

CONAF site and time period, and conducted paleopathology (dental and skeletal)

analysis. Collected bone samples of human and animal skeletons for chemical analysis to

reconstruct nutritional status via the identification of trace elements.

June 2012 and August 2013. With Rowan students . Turner, M. Pollinger, R. keating, T.

Turmell Chelsea Cordle, Derek Davies, and Alessandra Ursino Accomplished at the

Museo Arqueologico de La Serena, La Serena, Chile the dental analysis of skeletal

samples (dated to 3000 years before present) excavated from the site Penuelas- CONAF,

of Chile’s semiarid north. The analysis was accomplished via visual identification of

pathology determination of teeth affected.

May 2014, at Rowan University accomplished the forensic anthropological analysis of

three Native American crania as per request of Ms. Patt Martinelli, Director of the

Vineland Historical Museum, Vineland, NJ.

August 2014. With two Rowan students, John Hewell and Haley Moore, accomplished at

the Museo Arqueologico de La Serena, La Serena, Chile the conservation and

paleopathology of skeletal samples (dated to 3000 years before present) excavated from

the sites La Serena, of Chile’s semiarid north. The analysis was accomplished via visual

identification of bone pathology determination of age and sex.

de Investigaciones de Chile (Investigation Police of Chile) at the Museo Arqueologico de

La Serena, La Serena and the Museo del Limari, Ovalle, Chile. M. Rosado received from

the chief of police, Chile's IV Region a certificate of recognition for her contributions in

forensic anthropology knowledge to the Policia de Investigaciones de Chile. Rowan

University students Craig Graham, Kim Cuccia, Keisha Pierre-Louis, Adam Capel, and

Chris Barton assisted in the workshop presentation and were consequently invited to the

Laboratorio de Criminalisticas-Policia de Investigaciones de Chile to learn about the

latest techniques in crime identification.

Spring 2003, the course titled “Natives of South America: In Spanish” was taught for the

first time. The course, approved in 2000 by the Curriculum Committee and strongly

supported by the Foreign Languages Department, is designed for Spanish Majors and

native speakers to practice conversational and written Spanish

2002-2004, contributor in the development of the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental

Studies. The major was approved in 2004 and is scheduled to start in the Fall of 2005.

This is an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary program that responds to the needs for

well-rounded and trained environmental specialists in industry government , and

education. The program emphasizes the interdisciplinary aspects of the environment and

will provide graduates with the necessary knowledge for environmental studies/science

positions in industry, government, and education as well as placement as strong

candidates for graduate programs in environmental sciences.

Spring 2004, contributor in international component the proposal “Integrating Service

Learning In Engineering Clinics.” The goal of this project is to implement service

learning opportunities, at the local and international level, throughout the curricula of the

departments of the College of Engineering at Rowan University. The international

component requires an anthropological and multicultural understanding perspective.

Spring 2004, put forward the inclusion of the Geography and Anthropology Department

in the Memorandum of Agreement for Collaboration Between Rowan University and La

Universidad de La Serena, Chile. Geography and Anthropology will be part of the

collaborative projects that will promote collaboration common to both institutions.

Fall 2004, team-taught with Diane Markowitz the course “Research Seminar in

Anthropology: Forensic Anthropology.”

Fall 2004, with Marilyn Feke, Foreign Languages Department, developed the team-

taught, upper level Honors course titled, “Linguistics and Cultures of Native South

America.” Accepted by the Honors Program Committee, scheduled for fall 05.

INTERDISCIPLINARY AND TEAM RESEARCH

October 29, 2003, presented with K. Lewis and S. Mollick “The Historical Archaeology

of the Cohansey Baptist Cemetery” at the Annual Meeting of the Stafford Historical

Society, Manahawkin, New Jersey.

March 18, 2004 Presented with S. Mollick and K. Lewis the paper titled “Mapping the

Dead Through GIS: the Geography of the Cohansey Baptist Cemetery” at the Annual

IRISSA-GIS Conference, Rutgers University, Busch Campus Student Center,

Piscataway, New Jersey.

2006- Interdisciplinary research: paper on the “Effectiveness of an Honors Course

Specifically Designed for Freshman.” Development and content implementation was

specifically designed to provide basic ecology and anthropological knowledge, and

critical thinking and learning skills to freshman students as part of their "Rowan

Experience." Data collected from entrance and exit surveys of the students demonstrated

the importance of interdisciplinary faculty-student and faculty-faculty collaborations and

supported these as elements essential to the success of this course.

2000-2006, principal investigator, and co-director with S. Mollick (Geographer and

Planner, Office of Planning and Development, Cumberland County, New Jersey) and K.

Lewis (Historian, BA Rowan University) of the project titled “Resurrecting the Dead:

The Historical Archaeology of the Cohansey Baptist Cemetery”

2000 to present- with the archaeologists at the Museo de La Serena, Chile developed and

innovated the registry for Skeletal Inventory through the program Microsoft Excel. This

is a bone by bone registry that identifies skeleton accession number, sex, age, digital

photography, site, preservation, conservation, and paleopathology. Used extensively as a

source of demographic and bioarchaeological information, the inventory tracks human

and skeletal remains as these are excavated and processed for ananlysis.

December 27-January 13, 2015, invited by Dr. Joseph Wegner, University of

Pennsylvania to conduct the forensic anthropological analysis of the SIP royal tombs and

of the pharaoh Woseribre Senebkay, Abydos, Egypt.
