Design Philosophy
Design should complement the fluidity of our daily lives. We need spaces to stimulate well-being, provoke liveliness and provide comfort for varying lifestyles. As designers, we can accomplish these goals by understanding client needs and striving to deliver above and beyond their expectations.

An independent study course that facilitated a team response to a design competition. The competiton focused on the transfomation of a computer room into a state-of-the-art technology center. There was a focus on programming, design exploration, innovation, creative compliance with existing conditions, and visual deliverables.
Design a technology center that maximizes function by implementing elements such as materials, finishes, and furnishings. Striving to create an aesthetically pleasing space that represents Farmhouse Fraternity while using a sleek and modern approach to impliment needed technical equipment.

process sketches
Making space as multifunctional and purposeful as possible in a tight 15’ by 20’ space was key to the design outcome. Manipulation of the floor plan was an extensive phase in the design process.
These renderings were generated for the Midterm presentation for the clients. We felt inclined to provide some rendered perspectives to depict a better sense of the space.

The handrail was not part of the initial design. As the space was being used, we noticed the walls becoming damaged and then solved the problem by exchanging the original chair and added the protective strip
The HON Nucleus chair was a great selection for the clients. It provides ergonomic comfort and is also manufactured with a green practice which helps reflect the overall concept of the space.

Office Design Pantorium Ames, Iowa, Main Street MHA, Office Space
Objective
Client
Color, material, and pattern will create harmonious chi that enhances personal light with creative and supportive energy.
We used the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui as a guide throughout the project. We designed the space by taking aspects from feng shui and abstracting concepts, shapes and color theory to help stimulate the interior enviornemnt. We used the shape of the bagua for space con-figuration and then we used the bagua color association to color code the space accordingly.

In partners of two, the team was assigned to a client and a building space. Our location was the Pantorium located in the heart of the historic downtown area of Ames, IA. The main focus of this project was to design an adequate office interior and also earning LEED points for certification. The building design was to be as sustainable as possible. The scope of sustainablity was from green roofs to post-consumer recycled materials.
Mental Health America is a non-profit company that offers a scope of services. They are advocates for the mentally disabled, have prevention, detection and treatment for substance dependentus-ers, educational outreach to the community, and promote social justice for those with mental or substance disabilities.

Our team first began by laying out a proximity chart. We wanted the space to be interactive while still respecting the privacy that the staff needed to fullfill their jobs efficiently.

The team’s inital presentation consisted of images that reflected aspects of fire, wind, water, earth and wood. We then gener-ated a few inspiration sketches that helped depict what was in our minds about the general outcome of our design concept.

Healthcare Design Atria Encinitas Encinitas, California CCRC Retirement Community
Objective

site

This project focused on three-dimensional spatial development. We focused on a large scale, multi-unit institutional project. This was a four person team effort working towards a completion of a CCRC community using universal design, ADA codes, and incorporating the future needs of the baby boomer population.
sample tenant room| skilled nursing
The client, Atria Encinitas, is located near the San Diego, Califor-nia area. Their site includes a north and south facility. The north building is comprised of three floors and the south building is two stories high. Each building will require its own dining area, activity support areas, and living accomodations. site aerial view
In Atria , the floor plan offers mul-tiple living options. In each room the team incorporated space for a queen sized bed, a small kitchen-ette with storage, ADA compliant bathrooms, and living quarters large enough to accommodate most tenants’ furniture.
In the skilled nursing building, the rooms do not include the kitchen-ettes and tend to be a little smaller in order for tenants to get around easier.

The future baby boomer clients expect fitness facilities in addition to other technology support areas. These two areas will be trending in retirement facilities in the near future.
We created specific areas, other than dining and large community rooms, that will provoke interaction and give the tenants a small community feel while catering to different niche hobby groups.

This dining space focuses on natural lighting and plays with contrasting colors to make the space more visually appealing which is important for an aging eye.
The color palette for the dining area uses red as an appetite stimulator. We also designed a high contrast setting to help differentiate surfaces to ensure safety and independence.

As a design detail we looked we reviewed the fabrication in the Chanel clothing line. Some trends we found most traditional of the Chanel brand is its use of quilting and tweed. We used these fabrics as inspiration for the space. We included a life size quilted wall and used the tweed pattern as our display case shelving system.

Institutional design Rem Koolhass Museum
Objective
Rem Koolhass
“Architecture can't do anything that the culture doesn't.” - Koolhass
The ideation project consisted of a two-step process. The first part was to research an assigned architect or designer. As a group of four, we researched the methods and ideology of Rem Koolhaas. The second step was to split up into partners and research an assigned culture. My group was given the Moorish culture. The final step was to combine the two aspects and create a gallery space to display the works and accomplishments of Koolhass. This project primarily focused on research, group think, and model making.
