MKH
Humbled by the grand redwood trees and mountains in which I grew up, I knew I wanted to pursue a career which would allow me to create environments that create seamless connections between nature, people and the built environment. I believe the key to great design is collaboration, craftsmanship, creativity and cultural observation. I am inspired to design spaces with intention
and integrity that create human and environmental wellbeing.

RURAL SUSTAINABILITYRusinga Island, Kenya
Working from the Triple Bottom Line, this research based design project addresses the consequences of poor sanitation in developing countries. Focused on the small impoverished Kenyan Island of Rusinga allowed for a more detailed and specific solution to local issues. With good sanitation comes prosperity. Designing a latrine for a developing island will boost quality of life and prosperity as well as solve problems that are derived from poor sanitation.
By applying sustainable design principles to the “Give a Shit Composting Latrine”,
the project made it possible to be self sustaining in a rural and poverty-stricken area. The simplicity of the design creates a universality that can be applied to other areas of Kenya and other developing countries. It features a composting toilette with urine diverter, a composting chamber, and a rain harvesting system. The composting latrine runs on a closed loop system, which uses no more than it provides to the community of Rusinga Island. Overall the “Give a Shit Composting Latrine” is the solution to many of Rusinga Island’s current problems.
GIVE A SHIT COMPOSTING LATRINE
LAKE VICTORIA, KENYA RUSINGA ISLAND
SIZE: 3 miles by 10 miles
POPULATION: 20,000 to 30,000
CLIMATE: tropical with sun year round. Mostly sunny, hot + humid year round with rain fall in April + June
INFORMATION: Rusinga is considered one of the most poverty ridden places in Kenya. Most people make a living from fish + subsistence agriculture. The poor road conditions which connect Rusinga to more civilized areas of Kenya like Homa Bay and Mibita have severally cut down trade + tourism.
STATISTICS FOR KENYA:16 million people lack access to safe drinking water 29 million don’t have access to proper sanitation facilities 10,000 + children die each year from diarrhea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation
PROBLEMS
OVER FISHINGFish is the main source of income and food for the people of Rusinga island. In the past the people relied on agriculture for income and food, but due to top soil erosion the agriculture business diminished + people turned to the lake for food and income.
WATER POLLUTION Due to the geographical location of Rusinga in Lake Victoria, it is important to have proper sanitation facilities to prevent contamination of the lake. The lake and runoff from the mountains, provides Rusinga with drinking water, but due to the lack of sanitation, education and facilities, those water sources are becoming polluted with human waste
MALNUTRITIONDue to the unstable food sources + the over fishing of Lake Victoria, the people of Rusinga are malnourished. The lack of trade between Rusinga + neighboring areas has created a community in need of self-sustaining food sources. Bad soil conditions have knocked out the agricultural areas of Rusinga which had previously been feeding Rusinga residents

MATERIALSDue to the remote and rural location of the composting toilet, all material choices where based on local resources and availability. Stick and mud construction creates a local, durable and sustainable structure. The tire water barrel and tin roof are made out of readily available reclaimed and re-purposed materials.
RAIN WATER HARVESTINGHarvesting rain water is a key component to the design of the latrine. Not only will it provide non-contaminated water for hand washing, but it will be used to dilute urine. The diluted urine is key for creating a nutrient rich fertilizer, which will be used to make crop flourish and rejuvenate agriculture on Rusinga.
PASSIVE COOLING There is no electricity on Rusinga Island creating the opportunity for passive cooling and air in the latrine. Fresh air flow is a requirement for the composting process to occur properly. Drafts brought in through ducting will provide the necessary oxygen for the compost. Also, cross ventilation in the latrine will provide an odor free indoor environment.

TRIPLE BOTTOM LINEA goal of this project was to create a toilet that used the triple bottom line principal of people profit planet. Through the use of sustainable building practices, careful research, and design this project will help Rusinga’s poverty, economy and environment
CLOSED LOOPThe latrine runs on a tightly closed loop system. Humans eat food, which then is disposed into the toilet, the toilet processes the waste, which is then used as nutrients for agriculture...then humans eat the plants and the cycle starts over again.
WELLBEING IN RUSINGAThe latrine is a solution to Rusinga’s current economical, health and poverty problems. If the latrines where to be implemented in multiple locations Rusinga could thrive. The latrine provides sanitation, nutrient soil for food + a solution to pollution which all lead to other developments that would further the wellbeing of Rusinga

THE TRADE HOTEL + ART COLLECTIVE
San Francisco, California
The Trade Hotel and Art collective is a project based in the quickly developing Mid-Market area of San Francisco. Through research of the urban landscape of Mid-Market a design concept was developed that would solve many of the issues that have historically been unaddressed in the Mid-Market area. Inspired by urban street art, a main feature of The Trade Hotel + Art Collective is its ephemeral nature. A business plan and branding strategy was developed along side the design of this project to help further understand how to successfully design the space.
MISSION STATEMENT: The Trade Hotel and Art Collective is a place to foster creative conversations + connections between artists, locals, + visitors of San Francisco. The Trade is a space for visitors to discover + immerse themselves in the art scene of the city.
The Trade acts as a communal hub for artists of all mediums creating a network of artists that work together to better San Francisco through art. A verity of community programs + events are held by the Trade’s Art Collective, which gets San Francisco residence and visitors involved in the local arts and community.

ALLEYTHE
ART + COFFEE
Through the strategic placement of the hotel and the hotel entrance an alley way was created between the Hotel and a already existing
brick building. This provided the opportunity to brand the alley way and create a unique space that is often not seen in the urban cities. There
are two pop-up shops which will house new stores every 6 months keeping The Alley fresh and exciting for returning visitors. The Alley
Coffee Shop is a space for locals, artist, and hotel visitors. The Coffee shop will be a space which breaks down barriers between the visitors
and locals of the city. The idea of The Alley is to provide a privately owned public open space as well as a space that can be used for gallery, artist and hotel events. Through landscaping and strategic planning The
Alley will become an intimate, intriguing and well inhabited space for everyone to enjoy.

TACTICAL PLACE MAKINGSan Francisco, California
We were asked to re-define and challenge our ideas of what an urban space can be and how design can change perceptions of the urban public-realm. After scouting many intersections within the SoMA district of San Francisco, we decided upon the corner of Ritch + Lusk street, as it was space in which history, technology, living, working, and eating seamlessly overlap.
Through careful observation and data collecting we identified the needs of the space and culture at Ritch + Lusk. We then
broke into small groups to start design ideation and development for small areas within the larger Ritch + Lusk interaction.
Through the process of design development we decided the Cento Plaza was lacking vegetation and a space for people to connect with one another. The Cento Plaza Bench was designed to not only create much needed seating and lounging but create a space where the user can have meaningful interactions with one another in a comfortable natural setting.

HALF MOON BAY PUBLIC LIBRARYHalf Moon Bay, California
This Public Library is nestled in the small and diverse community of Half Moon Bay, California. Half Moon Bay is located between the mountains and ocean one hour south of San Francisco. The Library serves not only as a place for books and learning but as a collaboration, community and creativity center.
Designing with intention and purpose to create a spare that everyone in the community could enjoy, I pulled inspiration from the drift wood surfing forts seen on the Half Moon Bay beaches. Segmenting the building into three interconnected structures, creates a dynamic and intriguing relationship between spaces. The three segments of the building can be closed off during different times of the day to create flexibility for different
community and library programs.
Leaving the color pallet neutral in the space creates the opportunity for people to add liveliness, movement and color to the space. Full height glazing on each of the building segments helps blur the line between the outdoors and indoors. Natural sunlight will spark productivity as well as create a peaceful indoor environmental quality.
Overall the Half Moon Bay Public Library is a flexible, beautifully simplistic and community driven space. It combines all elements of a library, community center and educational institute to create a unique user experience. The space encourages collaboration and interaction amongst the community and individuals.

MARIOTTO RESIDENCE
San Francisco, CaliforniaThis three unit apartment building houses one family and two individuals who are all related. Each unit has specific needs and wants that are unique for their lifestyle and design preferences. Linking all the units together, the designs are inspired by different elements of decaying industrial building facades, creating unique, modern and nostalgic spaces through the use of reclaimed, salvaged, vintage materials and furniture. Style and functionality work together to form cohesive and comfortable living spaces.
Large industrial windows are used throughout the space to define space while still allowing natural light into every space. The Garden unit is an intimate and quirky space which breaks down barriers between the outdoors and indoors. The Lower unit is a live/work apartment which makes use of a functional layout to create an open yet private living and working space. The Upper Unit apartment is designed for entertaining with large functional open space that can house large parties as well as intimate dinners.
