A Message from Mr. Tortorello
Hello, parents!
We made it! Thank you so much for another incredible school year. It is an honor and privilege to serve
your students and walk with them as they grow on this journey to college and adulthood. On behalf of
our faculty and staff, I just want to say a huge THANK YOU for being a part of the Marian community
and for entrusting us with your daughters and sons. Marian is the special place that it is because we
have such wonderful students and families.
May God bless you and your students with a wonderful, fun-filled summer season. Whether you’re
traveling or relaxing at home, may you feel God’s grace shine upon you and may you enjoy quality time
with friends and family.
Please pray for all of our students who are traveling in the coming week, including our school trips to
China, Costa Rica, and Appalachia. May our students learn a great deal by engaging with our world in
new ways, and may they return safely to share their experiences.
Have a great summer!
Mr. Steve Tortorello
Welcome Class of 2023 Families! At A Glance
With this newsletter we welcome our newest class of Scholars With a Soul! As you graduate from eighth grade and leave your current school, the faculty, staff and students of Marian Catholic High School are looking forward to your beginning your high school journey in our school community.
Over the next couple of months, you will periodically receive newsletters regarding information for purchasing dress code items, technology training sessions, Schedule Pick-Up Day (Friday, July 19), and other information pertinent to incoming freshmen families. These electronic newsletters are sent regularly during the school year as a primary way of keeping families informed of the happenings at Marian Catholic. Welcome future Spartans!
Summer Reading List
The Summer Reading list was sent to current students via Schoology earlier this month and is posted on the Students page of the Marian website. The list also contains direct links to Amazon to purchase the paperback copies of each required book for each grade and placement level (please click on the image above to access the list).
Incoming freshmen are required to read the required books, and all incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors are required to both read and annotate their books before the first day of school If incoming freshmen are familiar with annotation techniques, they are encouraged to annotate their books as well.
As we introduced last year, every Marian student will be reading one book in common in addition to their other summer reading book(s). The One Book One Marian selection for 2019-2020 is Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk to Water, a powerful novel of tragedy, triumph, and survival based on the true story of Salva Dut, one of the lost boys of Sudan. We are grateful for this opportunity to again have shared conversations across grade levels and subjects, and look forward to the opportunities this initiative will afford our school community.
Immunizations for Students Entering 12th Grade in 2019
All students entering 12th grade this August are required by the Illinois Department of Health to show proof of recent meningococcal conjugate vaccination (MCV). All 12th graders will need to show proof of receiving two doses unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age; in this case, only one dose is required.
Some students may have already received this vaccine since it has been recommended for various populations in the recent past. In this case, all you need to do is provide verification from your child's physician of receiving the vaccine. The deadline for submitting proof of the MCV vaccine to the Main Office is July 1, 2019. Students without adequate proof of vaccination will be subject to exclusion from school as described in the school code of Illinois.

Spartan Academy STEAM (Science & Athletic) Camps
Why is Spartan Academy STEAM Camp the place to be this summer for 1st-8th grade students? Because you can...put a stop to summer learning loss, spark an interest in science, create an interest in a career at an early age, help your child experience academic success in a low pressure setting, and increase exposure to science, technology, engineering, the arts and athletics, and math!
Spaces are available for all of the above this summer. Click on the STEM Logo for academics and arts, and the Spartan helmet to register for Athletic camps!
