Global and local: the transmission of Arabic texts in al-Andalus

The process of reception of the intellectual production in Arabic from other Islamic

regions to al-Andalus – especially in the early period but extensively to the eight

centuries of Andalusi history – involved a selection that raises the question of which

were the main factors that determined it and the extent to which it influenced the

development of the local production. At the same time, that process of reception is

not transparent to modern scholarship in its entirety in the sense that its

reconstruction sometimes requires reading against the narrative provided by the

Andalusi sources. In my paper, I will explore these issues presenting more questions

than answers.
