PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE This week, I was delighted to see students of Marie Bashir Public School return to school for face to face learning on their rostered day as well as the children of essential workers. They seemed so delighted to see each other and their teachers. We look forward to seeing the children again next week on their designated day:

Monday: Year 5 and Year 6

Tuesday: Year 1 and Year 2

Wednesday: Kindergarten

Thursday: Year 3 and Year 4

Please note: The school will be open for children of essential workers from Monday to Friday. Entry into the school grounds for students will be via the side school gate. Only children are permitted on the school premises. School Times Students are not permitted on the school grounds prior to 9am and after 3:45pm unless they are attending ‘Before and After School Care’.

School Materials Required Students are asked to bring in their school laptops and head phones on days they attend school. Stage 3 students are asked to return their art scrap books as these will be required for class each Monday. Afternoon Pick Up Parents are reminded of the following during afternoon pick up: • Use the Kiss and Ride zone. Please display

your child’s name on the car dashboard to make it easier for the teachers to identify your car.

• Parents are asked to remain in their vehicle and allow the teacher on duty to direct the children into the car.

• Parents are encouraged to observe social distancing if they are picking their child up.

Marking of Work via Remote Learning The teachers at Marie Bashir Public School have been extremely mindful of the importance of marking student work daily and providing children with feedback on their work. It is important for students to read this feedback so that students are acknowledged for their work and efforts. Feedback also supports students to understand what is to be done and how to improve their performance. Remote teacher feedback may vary in the next coming weeks as teachers juggle the increasing demands of face to face teaching and remote learning. If the class teacher is face to face teaching on particular days, remote feedback may not be received until the end of the week. School Uniform Shop All Purchases can be made by following the steps below. Winter uniform order notice: Step 1: Please fill in the Uniform Order Form (see attached document on page 6 of this newsletter) Step 2: Pay by EFT or PayPal, Step 3: Email the form to [email protected] Step 4: Your order will be distributed to your child's classroom via school staff Any uniform purchase enquiries, please email to [email protected]

School Uniform Students are asked to wear their full winter uniform. The school jumper is also required to be worn as the weather gets cooler.

Birthdays I request that parents do not send party bags, cake etc into school to be shared with their child’s class or friends on their child’s birthday. Please let your child’s class teacher know if it is your child’s birthday on a school day and we will have a virtual cake and sing happy birthday to your child.

Extra Curricula Activities One on one instrumental music tuition, orchestra, choir, tennis, kung fu, reading club, school assemblies and PSSA will not resume until further notice. Merit Certificates Whilst remote learning, the staff at Marie Bashir Public School are aware of the need for recognise students for their work and efforts. Two merit certificates will be issued to students in each class every fortnight. Students receiving merit certificates will be advertised in our weekly newsletter. These certificates will be sent to your child in the post. Canteen Parents are reminded that the school canteen will be closed unless further advised. Opportunity Class Applications The placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, will be delayed until later in the year. As a result, applications will not open on 28 April 2020 as previously advised and published.

This delay is in response to the social distancing measures that are currently in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout the community. As part of the application process, eligible students are required to sit a test in a supervised environment. Social distancing guidelines currently in place make it difficult to implement a large-scale assessment at this time.

The opportunity class placement will still go ahead in 2020 however, the process for that, including the timeline, will look a little different this year. The Department of Education intends to ensure Year 5 students are placed in opportunity classes in 2021 with minimal disruption to schools and families.

The department continues to work closely with NSW Health to ensure people have access to the latest advice on how to keep staff, students and the community safe. Revised dates for applications, tests and process changes (including any changes to school assessment scores) will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

Web pages will be updated shortly to reflect this message.

Parents and carers are encouraged to continue to monitor the department’s website to remain up to date with information relating to Opportunity Classes.

They’re Counting On You

With more children resuming face-to-face learning this week, please be vigilant & take extra care around school zones:

Slow down to 40

Give way to buses with flashing lights

Observe signposting

If you are on school drop off or pick up:

Drop your kids off and pick them up on the school side of the road

It’s safest for your kids to get out of the car door on the kerb side of the road

Do not double park or make U turns

If you are walking with your child:

• Always hold their hand (up to the age of 10)

• Use pedestrian crossings where possible

• Follow instructions of school crossing supervisor
