Though beautiful, fit, and healthy, Mariel Hemingway is not your run-of-the-mill celebrity.

For starters, she’s Ernest Hemingway’s granddaughter. She grew up far from Hollywood, calling Ketchum, Idaho home. She was in her first film at only 13. And then, there’s the Oscar: Hem-ingway won one of the statuettes — for her role as Tracy in Woody Allen’s Manhattan — before her 18th birthday. To top it off, she champions a lifestyle one doesn’t associate with the realm of celebrity: Hemingway has become a voice of holistic balance, health and wellbeing within the alternative community.

With an overarching goal to help others be the best they can be, Hemingway tackles a myriad of topics, from gardening to interiors and healthy diet to meditation.

Mariel Hemingway’s Simple Tips for Living a Healthy Life

Starting with Finding My Balance, a personal memoir about a life’s journey honed by yoga and meditation, Hemingway has published three books that promote a top-to-bottom healthy lifestyle. In 2007, in Healthy Living from the Inside Out, Heming-way provided a how-to guide for finding and enhancing personal balance and health through self empowerment. Eventually, her focus expanded to include diet, and her most recent publication — Mariel’s Kitchen: Simple Ingredients for a Delicious and Satisfying Life — provides ways to easily and deliciously “turn your kitchen into the heart of your home.” The publication was also marked with the launch of a company that produces food products that care for the health of the body, mind and spirit. Soup-to-nuts healthy living can oftentimes be overwhelming, especially for someone that lives an active, busy lifestyle and doesn’t have time to focus on the details. But if anyone’s an expert on making the time, space and energy for a shift towards a wholesome body, mind and spirit, it’s the ever-busy Hemingway. Luckily for all of us, she shares the journey behind her success and some simple tips anyone can implement with The Whole Person Calendar — somehow, healthy living suddenly seems easy.

whenever possible, organic or biodynamic.

WP: What inspired you to create a cookbook?MH: Mariel’s Kitchen is more about eating locally, creating a green kitchen, eating simply and healthfully and, of course, going gluten free when possible.

WP: Diet, fitness, the home environ-ment. Healthy living can be over-whelming. Where does one start, and what “tips” can you share?MH: If you want to change your food, start with breakfast. Watch a sunrise or sunset daily. Find an adventure you love. Drink water out of a glass. One of the most important things you can do is laugh — it makes you younger, healthier and happier.

Creating a healthier body and mind allows us to do more and live a longer, more vibrant and meaningful life. It is my belief that the choices we make, the information we seek and the food we eat are integral to our well-being.
