Good People GettingScammed #3Dear Residents,

We hope you are enjoying our Good People Getting Scammed newsletter articleseries.

In June we covered IRS Impersonation Scams. We learned that the IRS will never call ataxpayer to demand payment without first having mailed a bill to the taxpayer. The IRSwill also never ask for a credit or debit card number over the phone or will they everthreaten you with a police arrest.

In July we covered unsolicited calls, including robocalls. We learned not to give outpersonal information in response to an incoming call. We also learned that saying “no”or just hanging up are very good options!

This month we are learning about Sweepstake scams and Jamaican Lottery scams. Here is how they work:

A Sweepstakes scam will start with a phone call, or something in the mail telling theperson that they have won or have been entered to win a prize. Scammers will claim tobe various people but don’t necessarily associate with any specific organization. Theywill inform the victim that they have won $1 million and sometimes a new car.

Scammers then require the victims to pay a fee to either collect their supposed winningsor improve their odds of winning the prize. The fee is usually requested as a wire forseveral hundred dollars via Western Union.

Scammers obtain phone numbers from “Lead Lists” which are essentially a list of victimsand potential victims. Scammers buy and sell these lists and use them to targetconsumers in futures scams.

A Jamaican Lottery scam will start with a simple phone call, usually from a numberbeginning with “876”, the country code for Jamaica. Scammers tell victims they have

won the Jamaican lottery or a new car and, for their winnings to be delivered, they mustfirst wire a few hundred dollars to cover processing fees and taxes.

The criminals will often instruct their victims not to share the good news with anyone sothat it will be a “surprise” when their families find out. Scammers tell victims to send themoney in a variety of ways including prepaid debit card, electronic wire transfers, moneyorders and even cash.

Rest assured, you have not won the lottery or a sweepstakes, especially if you havenever entered to win a prize. The best advice we can offer is do not provide the callerwith any information. Please hang up the phone as fast as possible!

Sheldon Park Bus Fall is right around the corner, but our Adventure loving residents have really beenenjoying the mild summer weather. Our scenic drives to Dorena Lake, Alpine, andJunction City were a big hit.

The weather was perfect as our Memory Care residents enjoyed a picnic lunch right nearthe ocean at Haceta Head. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.

A fun time was had by everyone at the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City. The lineswere long for meat pies, but the folks who braved them didn’t regret it.

Fall in our area means beautiful colors and also beautiful apples at Detering Orchards,so join us for our annual apple picking trip this month.

Join us for a country drive to Brownsville or Mt. Tom, or for a shopping trip to Bi Mart orWal Mart.

There is still enough of summer left to squeeze in one last picnic, so come along with usand enjoy lunch at the Owens Rose Garden.

Please remember that you must sign up at the front desk to go on the trips.

Hope to see everyone on the bus!

Depression (a continuation from last month!) Tip 2: Get moving

When you’re depressed, just getting out of bed can seem like a daunting task, let aloneexercising. But exercise is a powerful depression fighter—and one of the most importanttools in your recovery arsenal. Research shows that regular exercise might be as effectiveas medication for relieving depression symptoms. It also helps prevent relapse once you’rewell.

To get the most benefit, aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a couple times a week. Thisdoesn’t have to be all at once—and it’s okay to start small. A 10-minute walk can improveyour mood for two hours. Our courtyard is a perfect place to walk!

Exercise is something you can do right now to boost your mood!

Your fatigue will improve if you stick with it. Starting to exercise can be difficult when you’redepressed and exhausted. But research shows that your energy levels will improve if youkeep with it. You will be less fatigued, not more, once it’s part of your routine. Find anexercise partner and encourage each other to “show up”. If you don’t know someone…askJennifer. She can help you find a partner!

Find exercises that are continuous and rhythmic. The most benefits for depression comefrom rhythmic exercise—such as walking, weight training, swimming, or dancing—whetheryou move both your arms and legs simultaneously, or dance to the rhythm while you areseated. Ask Jennifer, she knows which of the classes we offer are best for you and she willhelp you get started. 😊

Add a mindfulness element, especially if your depression is rooted in unresolved trauma orfed by obsessive, negative thoughts. Focus on how your body feels as you move andstretch—enjoy the feeling of the wind on your skin if you are walking outside, or the rhythmof your breathing as you take one of the classes. Mindfulness can be a type of meditationthat will relax and uplift you as you focus on good thoughts.

Remember, every day counts…don’t let one go by that you can’t say…

“This was a good day… not a perfect day perhaps, but a very good day!”

Make it a good one… Only you can! Sandra – Community Relations Dir.
