CTE SPOTLIGHT CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

NEW CTE COURSE OFFERINGS FOR THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR, CHECK THEM OUT! Are you ready for something new? CTE is excited to offer several new programs for the 2018-19 school year that just

might peek your interest!

At the high schools we have:

At Interlake High School we are excited to add a new Construction Management Trades

program that will be offered every morning for 2-hours and will also be open to all students in the district. This course is designed to prepare students for the field of construction with

a great deal of time devoted to hands-on projects. Students will learn and practice the processes used in building a house. Students will learn from hands-on experience with wall

construction and framing, residential wiring, finish carpentry, roofing, material selection,

technical mathematics and blueprint reading. Students will gain the knowledge and skillset to successfully succeed in this rapidly changing work force and be prepared for post-secondary education.

CTE is excited to bring AP Computer Science Principles to all our high schools. Be a part of this fun and

engaging class. This course signals a change in direction for AP courses, as its primary emphasis builds on the students’ own backgrounds and strengths and emphasizes the importance of collaboration. Many who are used to

a more rigidly structured AP course will be surprised by this class’s innovative, flexible curriculum that uses the experiences, interests, and strengths of students to shape its path. The course develops computational thinking

skills in the context of creative problem solving. The primary goal of the course is to introduce students to the

foundational concepts of computer science and challenge them to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. In this course you will learn about ways to analyze and study data, define and solve algorithms,

how the internet works, and the global impact of computing. Rather than a deep-dive into computer programming, this class takes a broader impact and overview look at the field of computer science. It will include content and

influence from classes offered at Stanford and Harvard.

At our middle schools:

Our middle schools will be offering Computer Science Discoveries next year. The introductory course empowers

students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. Students will learn the basics of HTML and CSS as they create their own website.

Students will learn the basics of JavaScript as they create their own game. This course is perfect for any beginner

interested in computer science but not ready for a dedicated coding course.

WANIC AND SKILL CENTER PROGRAMS – FAIR COMING SOON! Registration for next year is closer than you think. Make sure you consider the many opportunities available

to your son or daughter in high school. If your son or daughter is interested in any of the many WANIC or Skill Center courses, have them go to the WANIC Fair that is being held during both lunches at each high

school. This provides your son or daughter an opportunity to talk to the teacher and hear about the

programs before he/she registers. The WANIC Fairs will be held on:

February 2 at Bellevue High School

February 5 at Sammamish High School

February 6 at Newport High School

February 9 at Interlake High School If you have specific questions regarding programs being offered outside of Bellevue School District, please contact your

College and Career Advisor. The College and Career Advisor for your school is:
