Album ArtworkEach of the singles from her album Electra Heart features different album artworks. Each of the artworks has Marina, and only her, on the cover pulling various different poses. It also shows different hairstyles, hair colours, expressions and so on showing the different personas she has took on with this album.

The use of the close-ups show how her image is a key part of this album. Also, the text used does not cover up the artists face. They all have Marina making eye contact to build a relationship with her target audience and grab their attention. All of the images are made to look vintage, to create a reoccurring style throughout this album.

Album promotionTo promote her album, they displayed the viral ad campaign on the side. They covered her face, and people have to go to the website below to find outthe answer. Due to Marina not being highly known, people would evidently go to the website to find out who she is. The blur added to the picture makesit seem as if this picture has been taken by thepaparazzi.

Also, they made a campaign poster below, putting Marinas first album style against her new album style as if it were two artists going against eachother, when in fact they were both her.

Music video- PrimadonnaThe first shot of the video is an extreme close up of Marina, which is a code and convention of musicvideos to create Marina a brand identity.

As you can see, close ups are very predominant inthe music video. In each screenshot, Marina’s faceis in the center of the frame showing that she is the most important thing in the music video, and tomake the audience constantly look at her.

Music video - PrimadonnaMarina has been dressed in various pink coloured outfits. This has clearly been done to create the image of Marina being “Barbie like” and very girly.

Looking into the meaning of her album, this is what Marina wanted to convey, as she devised different personas for her “Electra Heart” album and the girly girl was one of them, shown throughout this video.

The outfits go from bedroom attire to going out attire, which could be showing the stages of Marinas character throughout the day. This also connotes Marina to be cute.

The lighting is dark, with key lighting focusingon Marinas face. This has been done to make the audience notice her face more than what is occurring in the background, and to further create this brand identity for Marina.

There are also retro effects used throughout the video to add a sense of class and to construct Marinas persona as the old fashioned views on women being girly and pretty. This is further shown through the hair style shown on the side and the clothes in which she wears.

Music video - Primadonna

The lyrics along with the visuals portray Marina to be a “gold-digger” and heavily concerned about her looks. The lyrics say “Got you wrapped around my finger babe” shows that she is a controlling women. Also, “The primmadonna life” shows shes in it for the glamorous lifestyle.

The amount of camera almost acts like a mirror for Marina as she pulls various faces that would occur in a mirror. This portrays Marinas character as vain and self-centered, which is what Marina actually tried to convey.

Godwin analysisThere are lots of close-ups of Marina throughout.

The notion of looking occurs when Marina stands in front of the mirror.

The lyrics match the visuals when Marina says “Wrapped around my finger babe” and spins her finger around.

The music match the visuals when the beat comes in and Marina quickly turns around and jumps.

Conclusion

Marina’s image created has been made to appeal to a wide range of people, due to the use of various personas she becomes throughout her album “Electra Heart”. The album emulates “trashy pop” and Marina even said she has always wanted to make an album to show what is wrong with pop, which she may have tried to do with this album. She represents herself as the average pop artist, with the pink clothing, blonde bimbo hairstyle, excessive amount of make-up and the cute girly twirls she does throughout the video. She also made her looks a main focus throughout her album and videos.

This has evidently been done to make Marina appear to be indie and show that she is not like everyone else, by making her album generic. If you look at her first album, she has a unique look and her songs are clearly thought out and mean something to her.
