After the intense winter in thenortheast, we are all eager for the summer boating season to begin — bringing us muchwarmer temperatures and achance to get out on the water. This past winter, the Marinalifeteam was lucky to escape thefrigid temperatures to attendseveral boat shows and marinaconferences in Florida and aquick charter in the BVI’s.

We appreciated everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello. We love hearing from members about their experiences on thewater and about new updates and improvements from our partnermarinas. Marinalife is always looking for exciting cruising storiesfor the magazine. Please send your stories to [email protected].

We are enjoying Marinalife’s 15th anniversary year. It is agood time to reflect on the last 15 years and truly appreciateeveryone who made this all possible. It also encourages us to look ahead to the future and how we can continue to expand andenhance our mission to help make everyone’s boating experienceon the water a little easier. With this in mind, we have many

exciting plans for 2015 and years to come. Be on the lookout foran enhanced mobile app that provides easy access to all of the information you may need on the water, including fuel prices, marina details, destination information and more.

As you’re planning your trip this spring, whether for the day, weekend or an extended trip, don’t forget to take advantage of our sitewide search. From the search box on the homepage, youcan enter any keyword, marina, location or body of water, and thesearch will pull everything related to the criteria — from marinasto articles and discounts, fuel prices and maps. Our sitewidesearch tool makes it very easy to gather information about yournext destination.

We are confident you will enjoy the wide range of articles covered in this issue. From Peter and Cathie Trogdon’s adventuresin Alaska to Debra & Sy Israel’s cruise to Compass Cay in theExuma, Bahamas. Also, don’t miss the story about birding inCape May, New Jersey and fishing in Destin, Florida.

We look forward to seeing everyone out on the water soon!

SPRING 2015 19

For a tranquil escape from life’s hustle and bustle, cruise to River Dunes (252-249-0253, riverdunes.com), a planned maritime community with 400 slips not far from Oriental. The trip from Beaufort is within protected ICW waters to the open waters of the Neuse River. Although a short crossing, transiting the Neuse River in strong easterly or westerly winds can make for a wet and uncomfortable cruise.

River Dunes, on the western shores of Broad Creek, welcomes mariners via a long canal entrance surrounded by stately homes, manicured lawns and colorful gardens. Newly constructed state-of-the-art docks await you, along with peace and quiet. Marinalifemembers receive 10% off transient dockage. Kick back, read a book, take a walk or bicycle around the community. Enjoy a swim in theheated pool, soothe your muscles in the hot tub, grab lunch poolside, then take a nap on a shaded lounge chair under a private cabana.Later, hit the steam shower before heading to dinner. Afterward, wander through the nearby Harbor Village, or watch the sun set froman Adirondack chair in front of a fire pit. Everywhere, natural wonders surround you.

The River Dunes Harbor Club, housed in a resplendent Southern-style mansion with wraparound porches and wicker rockingchairs, overlooks the marina. Inside, transient visitors will find a quiet reading room with a fireplace and a great room for gathering towatch TV or play pool.

Day 2From Beaufort to OrientalDistance: 25.6 miles

River Dunes, a clean marina, was built on GraceHarbor, and the entire property was designed to

maintain the natural surroundings.

The wreckage of Blackbeard’s ship the QueenAnne’s Revenge was discovered by divers 300years after the wreckage. Many of the artifactsare on display at North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort.

The Shackleford Banks wild horses have been roaming the banks of North Carolina forover 400 years and are the descendants of Spanish mustangs from Colonial America.

Just off the shore of Beaufort, kayakers will enjoy paddlingthrough the banks of Carrot Islandand discovering all the wildlife.

Leaving River Dunes, mariners musttravel a short distance on the Neuse Riverto Pamlico Sound, then around MawPoint Shoal into the mouth of the BayRiver, then proceed north through theHobucken Canal, exiting into the PungoRiver to reach Belhaven. Strong northeastwinds on the Neuse River section canmake for a wet cruise. Southerly windsproduce following seas.

Our final port of call is Belhaven, asmall coastal town whose livelihood is dependent on traveling mariners. Belhavenis located on the ICW along the banks ofthe Pungo River and Pantego Creek andhas become a favorite overnight for snowbirds heading south to warmer climates or for those heading north back to theirhome ports. Docking is limited. Visiting

boaters have the option to stay in town at Belhaven Marina (252-944-0066, belhavenmarina.com), which can accommodate vessels up to 65 feet. Or just north of Belhaven is Dowry Creek Marina (252-943-2728,

dowrycreekmarina.com), offering fuel, clean shower and restroom facilities, aswimming pool, laundry facilities, a courtesy car and a mariner’s happy hour at 5 p.m. every night. Marinalife membersreceive 10% off transient dockage.

Once you’ve tied up at Dowry Creek,it’s a short 15-minute drive to town. Pam-lico Street runs north from the harbor andintersects with Water, Main and PungoStreets to create Belhaven’s quaint towncenter. For a must-stop shopping experi-ence, visit Riddick & Windley Hardware, established in 1938. Also don’t miss theBelhaven Memorial Museum. The town’shistory began with fishing and hunting, and it’s not surprising that crabbing,

shrimping and fishing continue to supportthe community’s economy. Generations of families have fished the waters surrounding Belhaven, and that bountygraces the tables in nearby restaurants.Fish Hooks Café is a local favorite known for crab-stuffed flounder. Georgie’s Sport & Oyster Bar has a dizzying selection of seafood cooked any way you like.

Belhaven’s small-town Southern hospitality is the perfect way to wrap up a full weekend of coastal exploring. ml

CruISIng WIth > WILLIAM CANNON

taking your time cruising the icw from charleston to fort lauderdale

BY WILL IAM CANNON

This is my fourth annual north-to-south repositioning for the winter season from Charleston, South Carolina, to Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While I enjoy the ease of cruising the ocean on my 58-foot Ocean Alexander, Lady Gigi, this year I wanted us to slow it down and take our time by cruising the ICW as much as possible, and staying a few extra nights in my favorite cities along the way. Waking up knowing you’re relaxing each day truly makes a huge difference in your trip.

MarinaLife_Spring15_1-63_MarinaLife Template 3/20/15 5:40 PM Page 22

SPRING 2015 23

This year marks my sixth time visiting the Sea Pine Resort’s Harbour Town Yacht Basin (843-363-8335, harbourtownyachtbasin.com). It’s conveniently located on the ICW and offers easy access to the ocean via Calibogue Sound. The dockhands, Cindy and Leslie, helped us navigate

Lady Gigi through the sound, as it can be a little tricky. Docking is easy, with no current, and the wind is usually blocked by the surrounding condos.

CQ’s Restaurant is just a three-minutewalk from the marina and has been a localstaple for years, offering an array of freshlycaught seafood, but my favorite dish is the

beef short ribs! There is a small marketwithin the marina complex for provisioning. To ease into my trip, I played a round of golf at Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour’s RBC HeritageTournament, and enjoyed a quick bite toeat at the café overlooking the course.

To view this article online, visitmarinalife.com/cannon

Leg 2: FernandinaBeach, Florida

Lady Gigi accessed Fernandina HarborMarina (904-310-3300, fhmarina.com)through the St. Mary’s Inlet, three milesnorth. Easy docking is available in thecurrent, because they dock all transientvessels on the long face dock. The marina offers high-speed pumps for both gasoline and diesel, a captain’slounge and laundry and shower facilities. A courtesy car isn’t necessarybecause the marina is located just astone’s throw from Main Street, which has great restaurants and ampleshopping. Don’t miss LuLu’s for its excellent New Orleans-style food —their po’ boys are the best! We also ventured to Palace Saloon, said to be the oldest drinking establishment in Florida.

Leg 3: St. Augustine, Florida

We traveled 80 nautical miles south down the ICW to Conch House Marina (904-824-4347, conch-house.com). It is fairly easy to access the marina from the ICW at the mouth of the St. Augustine Inlet. The inlet is very exposed to wind, so always be aware of the direction it’s coming from. The marina staff was very helpfuldocking Lady Gigi, but we still had trouble with a 20-25-knot wind. Once safely tied, we had a great view back over the sand dunes to the Atlantic Ocean. The onsiterestaurant, a local hotspot with a Caribbean flare, also offered live music. We grabbed a taxi to the city’s downtown, which is not to be missed. It’s the oldest city in America, and wandering the streets you can really absorb the history. We ventured into the candlelit bar Taberna Del Gallo, which was established in 1734 and where all the bartenders wear period dress. Make sure you try the amazing sangria!

Leg 4: Fort Pierce, Florida

Fort Pierce City Marina (772-464-1245, fortpiercecitymarina.com) is the usual stoppingpoint for our journey south. This is the perfect marina stop to decide if the ICW or theAtlantic Ocean is your best choice from this point on. Construction on the 137 newfloating docks and new sea wall continues, scheduled for completion in early May. Thereis a very strong current as you approach the new entrance of the marina, just an eighth of amile south of South Bridge. The friendly staff changed our slip to one on a face dock. Theonsite Original Tiki Bar offers great drink specials and decent bar food. Downtown FortPierce is steps from the docks, with seafood and grocery markets just a few blocks away.

Leg 1: Hilton Head, South Carolina

Leg 5: West Palm Beach, Florida

One of our favorite marinas in all of Florida is Palm Harbor Marina (561-655-4757,palmharbor-marina.com). They have the most professional staff that we have ever encountered and surprisingly good transient rates. Access is fairly simple through thePalm Beach Inlet. Just make sure to be aware of the current when approaching. Once inside the docks, the current is not an issue. The marina staff is always waiting at yourslip to assist you and will then usher you away by golf cart to the office. No need for acar, as you are a block away from all the restaurants and nightlife offered on ClematisStreet in downtown West Palm Beach. I suggest grabbing a bite at Rocco Tacos and Pistache French Bistro while you’re in town. Provisions are an easy courtesy bus rideaway. And from West Palm, Fort Lauderdale is an easy cruise. ml

This is the perfect marina stop to decide if the ICW or the Atlantic Ocean is your best choice from this point on.

HARBOR EAST MARINA

How long have you been

manager at Harbor East?

Harbor East Marina opened in May of 1994, and I have been the GeneralManager ever since.

You have seen lots of changes in Baltimore’s

Harbor throughout the years. Which

change was the most exciting?

The Star-Spangled Sailabration in September 2014 with the hordes of visitorsthat poured into the harbor to witness thevisiting Tall Ships, Working Craft, BlueAngels and the incredible fireworks.

Besides boating, what is your passion?

I enjoy riding my Harley Davidson MC and for the last six years I have rekindled my interest in creating originalceramic sculptures at Anne Arundel Community  College.

What satisfies your need for speed?

My 1996 Harley Davidson Springer Classic tops out at 107 mph.

What is your favorite movie of all time?

All sea related? Now that’s a toss-up between “Master and Commander,”“Moby Dick” and “Captains Courageous.”

What is the most bizarre request you

ever received from a boater?

A guy staying at a local hotel wanted to charter a boat to go marlin fishing. He obviously didn’t believe we were approximately 160 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

Baltimore is known for its great local

dishes. What is your favorite?

The heavy, large steamed crabs at CantonDockside Restaurant.  The steamed musselsat Bertha’s Restaurant also are great!

If you had a boater who has never

been to Baltimore and can only see

one attraction, where would you

send him/her?

The National Aquarium if they had notbeen to an Aquarium recently. The American Visionary Art Museum justacross the harbor from Harbor East Marina is also a personal favorite.

Who do you cheer on the most?

Orioles or Ravens?

The Ravens are the definite favorites of the boaters and locals!

What is the one biggest mistake

boaters make when they dock?

Not realizing the momentum that a boat has when it is taken out of gear. Not recognizing how a cross wind cancomplicate things. Not having lines and fenders out and ready. ml

BlameIt on theBeaver

CrUisiNG ThrOUGh hisTOry >

One of the most fascinatingbits of history is the role that beaver furpelts played in international trade and, ultimately, the founding of Astoria, Oregon.Today, with our different sensibilities aboutwearing animal fur, it is difficult to imaginethe importance of beaver fur in everydaylife hundreds of years ago.

Although fur pelts from bears, fox, ermine and sable had long been used tomake warm, long-lasting clothing, beaverfur was prized for making hats. ThroughoutEurope, demand for hats made of beaverfelt was so great that by 1600, the European beaver was nearly extinct.

Felting is the process that turns furfibers into a pliable fabric. First the fur isremoved from the animal skin. This loosehair is then wetted with hot water,

matted together and pressed throughrollers to create felt. Unfortunately for the beaver, their downy wool undercoatmade the softest and most desirable feltfor hat making.

During the 17th century, the French,Dutch and British had access to the millions of beavers living in the Canadianand Great Lakes territories of NorthAmerica. Those beavers were trapped andskinned and their pelts sent by ship backto Europe. The volume of hats made frombeaver fur was staggering. From Englandalone, during 1700 to 1770, 21 millionhats were exported to continental Europe. The best trappers in North America wereNative Americans, and each colonialpower formed alliances with differenttribal nations for trading guns and steel

tools in exchange for pelts. These politicaland economic pacts also swept the tribesinto the vortex of colonial warfare, first inthe French and Indian War, and then theRevolutionary War.

The American Revolution had formallyended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783,but it wasn’t until 1794 that the loose endsof our new relationship with Great Britainwere tidied up with the Jay Treaty. One of the outcomes of this treaty was that our former oppressor was granted most favored nation trading status. And one entrepeneur, Johann Jakob Astor, was poised to take advantage of these new commercial opportunities.

In 1779, Astor emigrated from Germany to England and anglicized his name to John Jacob. After the Revolutionary War ended, Astor decidedto move from London to New York. He soon became a fur trader in the American Northwest Territories (today’supper Midwest), working with Indian and Canadian traders.

With the passage of the Jay Treaty,Astor realized he had a competive edge toimport furs from Montreal and sell themin Europe. By 1800, John Jacob Astor wasworth a quarter of a million dollars, whichtranslates into $5 millon of purchasingpower in today’s economy. Although furswere his primary interest, Astor soon

became interested in the burgeoningChina trade. He sent a trading ship toSouth China to the province of Guangzhou(Canton), which returned with enoughmarketable goods to make a large profit, which he promptly invested in 70 acres ofwhat is now mid-Manhattan real estate.

When Lewis and Clark reached themouth of the Columbia River in 1805,they established an American presence inthe Pacific Northwest. This also happenedto be where the best remaining fur-bearinganimals in North America could betrapped. Astor was now ready to controlthe North American fur trade using accessto the Canadian and American furs westof the Rockies via the Columbia River in

Oregon country. He wanted to create aglobal trading system based on the furs of the Pacific Northwest.

Astor’s grand trading scheme beganwith beads and blankets sent on his shipsfrom New York City to Oregon to be usedas trading wampum with native tribes fortheir fur pelts. The ships, now laden withfurs, were to be sailed across the PacificOcean to the international trading port

of Canton. There the furs were to betraded for porcelain and tea. The Chinesegoods would be shipped across the IndianOcean and onto London, where theywould be sold at a handsome profit.British manufactured goods, which werein high demand in the United States, would then be loaded into the cargo holdsfor the final leg of the journey across theAtlantic Ocean and back to New YorkCity. Then this round-the-world tradingcycle would be repeated.

To make his plan a reality, Astor firstneeded a base of operation in Oregon. Tothat end, he incorporated the Pacific FurCompany with the express purpose ofmounting two expeditons, one by sea and

one by land, to set up an outpost at themouth of the Columbia River. The shipTonquin departed on the oceanic routefrom New York on September 8, 1810,while the overland party left from St.Louis on October 21. The seafarers were first to arrive at the mouth of theColumbia River on April 12, 1811. They built a rough trading post and logstockade for protection. They christened

John Jacob Astor was the first multi-millionairein the United States, but prior to amassing his wealth, he worked as a diary salesman in Germany with his father and later manu-factured musical instruments in London.

The Port of Astoria was established in 1910 and is located 90 miles from Portland, Oreg., offering bothcommercial and recreational boaters services at two marinas and a boatyard.

They christened it Fort Astoria, and the fort became the first

permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast of North America.

it Fort Astoria, and the fort became thefirst permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast of North America. The overland expedition finally arrived at Fort Astoria nine months later, and theroute that they blazed later became theOregon Trail, bringing emigrants westward in their covered wagons.

Unfortunately for Astor, the War of1812 intervened and disrupted his plansfor Fort Astoria. The fort was taken overby a British fur trading company and renamed Fort George. By 1830, Astor forsaw that fashions were changing andthe demand for furs and beaver hats was on the decline. He soon sold all his interests in his fur companies and investedheavily in New York City real estate. When he died in 1848, he was the wealthiest person in the United States.

But what of Fort Astoria? A port cityslowly grew up around the fort and keptthe name Astoria. In 1847, the first postoffice west of the Rockies was establishedthere. Today, Astoria has a very busy commercial harbor and is a popular cruise ship port.

If you are coming by sea, rememberthat the Columbia River Bar can betreacherous, with conditions that changevery quickly. Currents from five to eightknots and large standing and breakingwaves are all possible where the river enters the Pacific Ocean, and it will test your boat-handling skills. You will be wellrewarded though, as visiting boaters cantour the Bumble Bee Cannery Museumand the nearby Columbia River MaritimeMuseum, which offer unique perspectiveson the history of the Pacific Northwest. ml

Compass Cay is located within adinghy ride from several other wonderfulplaces, including O’Briens Cay, part of theBahamas National Park. Some would saythat the natural aquarium there is the bestsnorkeling in the world. I would agree.Don’t forget to bring food, especiallybread, to feed the fish. Another spot weenjoy is Rachel’s Bubble Bath, a small natural swimming pool protected by largerock formations. When the tide levels arehigh, the waves blow in from the ocean, forcing a deluge of cascading water intothe swimming pool and producing a hugewaterfall and an abundance of bubbles.

Another place to explore is Staniel Cay,just 7.5 nautical miles southeast. The Staniel

Cay Yacht Club, accomodating boats up to185 feet, has two very small grocery stores, a fuel dock, lodging facilities and a newlyrenovated restaurant. Staniel Cay is knownfor its Thunderball Grotto, where the 1965James Bond film Thunderball was produced.

camera, the rocky outsides of the grottoare probably the best filming opportunityyou will have for capturing interesting fish, coral and all things aquatic.

One of my favorite attractions at Compass Cay are the third and fourthgenerations of pet nurse sharks that livearound the marina docks. The sharks arefed well and handled by humans manytimes daily, and they seem to seek out thishuman affection and enjoy — or at leasttolerate — humans swimming alongsidethem. There is a special dock dedicated to the sharks, and at high tide, when thedock is barely submerged, the sharks swimup and lie on the dock, waiting for themany people in line to pet and scratch

their backs. I know it sounds unlikely, and maybe even crazy and scary! But each summer, people flock to the islandjust to see such a sight. Once they realizethere isn’t much cause for fear and theirdoubts are alleviated, they too don swimmasks and take the plunge to swim withthe sharks.

Many boaters return to Compass Cay year after year, just as we do.

Compass’s welcome sign, positioned abovethe office dock entrance, says, “WelcomeHome.” Most boaters certainly feel that way about Compass. In fact, it isn’tuncommon for boaters to stay for a wholeseason. For this reason, it is best to bookyour stay as early as possible. Compass is a very special place, indeed! ml

Nurse sharks look likelarge catfish, but with adorsal fin and skin that

feels like sandpaper.

SPRING 2015 51

This particular dream was 20 years in the making, and theplan began to gel before we even took possession of our cruisingyacht, Bee Weems, in 2006.

My husband, Peter, had been bitten by the Alaska bug 20 yearsearlier. He worked in Alaska when we lived in Seattle, and he hadmany friends who either fished professionally or cruised on theirown pleasure yachts in southeast Alaska. Peter had traveled thereon other people’s boats, but his dream was to do this on his own.

After two years familiarizing ourselves with our new boat onthe East Coast, cruising from the Bahamas to Nova Scotia, wewere ready to turn our sights toward Alaska. Due to busy careers,we only have two months available each year for cruising, so wehad to plan carefully. Over the summer of 2008, we executed the first two-month stage, traveling from Annapolis, Maryland,to Duluth, Minnesota, by water — then Bee Weems was put on atruck and shipped to Anacortes, Washington.

The second stage involved a month’s vacation in the BroughtonArchipelago in British Columbia the following summer. We outfitted Bee Weems with crab and shrimp pots and a good supplyof food and departed from Anacortes, where Bee Weems had wintered in a comfortable covered slip. We gunk-holed for fourweeks, exploring the rarely visited islands that hug the Canadiancoastline and cruising among whales, dolphins and spawningsalmon, hauling our full crab and shrimp pots aboard. Bee Weemsmaneuvered well in strong currents and deep waters. It was an excellent introduction to the third stage of our Alaska odysseythe following year: the wilderness experience of southeast Alaska.

By the time this two-month summer adventure rolled around,we had tapped into the knowledge base of all our friends and acquaintances who had ever cruised to southeast Alaska. Theyhad shared lists of favorite anchorages, provisioning stops and secret crabbing and shrimping locations. We were like sponges, soaking up every bit of information we could glean. We acquiredall the charts and cruising books, all the necessary equipment, clothing and boots.

Our plan was to take two weeks to travel to Ketchikan, Alaska, from Anacortes. Weather is always the number one concern forany cruise, and we were fortunate that the weather was good for our mid-June departure. The trip north involved crossing wide-open straits and ducking into pristine anchorages amongthe many islands. We planned out stops for fuel, water, provisions, and garbage removal in the sparsely located towns along the way.

When we crossed into Alaskan waters from Canada, we weregreeted by a convocation of bald eagles on two rocky outcrops on either side of Bee Weems. I had never seen so many eagles inone place before. They were a harbinger of what was to come over the next weeks.

Southeast Alaska was designated a national forest more than 100 years ago by President Theodore Roosevelt. TongassNational Forest is 16.9 million acres, the largest in the UnitedStates. The entire region is a coastal temperate rainforest, whichmeans it receives more than 55 inches of precipitation annually.Approximately 75,000 people live in 31 communities, the largestof which is Juneau, Alaska’s capital, with a population of 31,000.It’s impossible to convey the immensity and majesty of this vastland of giant timbers, glaciers and snow-covered peaks. possible, however, to spend several weeks here without catching a glimpse of a mountain due to cloud cover and rain. Either way, the opportunities to observe the spectacular wildlife are exceptional.

Peter and I each had a pair of top-quality Weems & Plathbinoculars. We often diverted course to follow the wildlife. We learned very quickly to scan the shoreline for bears, wolvesand moose. We listened to the radio for chatter about whale activity. We watched humpback whales bubble feed and heardtheir eerie dinosaur-like calls. We saw bears turn over beach rocksin search of crabs and watched four bears feeding off a deadwhale at the same time.

There are no preset itineraries for Alaska cruisingadventures. Ketchikan, Juneauand Sitka are the three major provisioning townswith airports. We docked atEliason Harbor (907-747-3439,cityofsitka.com) in the city ofSitka, which has Russian ties and an onion-domed RussianOrthodox church sitting inthe midst of it. Most otherstops are native villages or old fishing or logging camps with minimum services.

Our method of cruising in Alaska was always to pay attentionto weather first. We didn’t attempt open-water crossings in high-wind situations but usually moved every day because thereare so many amazing coves, inlets and bays to explore. We timedour visits to villages and towns only when we were in need of fuel

and provisions. The rest of the time we anchored in solitude orwith only one or two other boats. It might seem like a lonely experience, but even in this vast area, we repeatedly saw the sameboats and began communicating with them on the VHF radioand then inviting one aboard for cocktails. They’ve developed into lifelong friends.

Most boats are in Alaska to harvest the bounty of the sea, andmost folks on boats are commercial, charter or sport fishermen.Even the pleasure boaters spend much of their cruising time fishing, crabbing and shrimping. Peter and I didn’t have all thecorrect fishing gear on board and Bee Weems doesn’t go slowly

enough to troll, but even ifwe were able to catch fish, wedidn’t have the freezer spacefor storing it once it wascaught. We were, however, thebenefactors of several gifts ofsalmon, halibut and shrimpfrom boating friends alongthe way.

There are two sites that almost all cruisers visit insoutheast Alaska. The first is Anan Creek Wildlife

Observatory, and the second is Glacier Bay National Park. AnanCreek Wildlife Observatory is set next to a river where salmonspawn from June to September, and the black bear come to feaston them. The National Forest Service operates this park, and athigh season visitors must call ahead to make reservations andpay a fee. When we arrived, we anchored in the bay, took thedinghy to shore and walked the mile-long boardwalk to the

observatory situated next to a waterfall. I was a bit nervous becauseI’d observed fresh bear scat along the path and bear claw marks in the wet dirt, which reminded me that we were not in the safetyof a zoo. Soon after we arrived at the observation area, a bearsauntered up the boardwalk behind us. The observation area is enclosed and safe from bears, but it was still a little disconcertingto see a bear show up so soon after our arrival. We spent an amazing hour watching the bears feed on the salmon.

By the end of our adventure, we knew more about the threetypes of Alaskan bears than we ever had expected to learn. TheAlaskan brown bear is essentially the same as the grizzly bear, butbigger. Both grizzly and brown bears have humps, whereas blackbears are humpless and are much smaller and less aggressive — or so we were told. We took seriously the advice we’d gotten to carry noise makers for scaring away bears if they approached us while we were exploring the shore. And although it wastempting to venture out on long hikes to stretch our legs afterdays on the boat in tight quarters, we did very little hiking inorder to avoid any possible bear confrontations.

Our favorite cruising area, without a doubt, was Glacier BayNational Park. This national treasure is as spectacular as the GrandCanyon, except that instead of looking down at the amazing

scenery, you look up at it. Even though it is hundreds of milesfrom civilization, the park is visited by many thousands of peoplewho arrive every day via cruise ship, charter boats and commercialaircraft. Because of the popularity of Glacier Bay, we made reservations months in advance at Glacier Bay National Park’smarina facility in Bartlett Cove (907-697-2627). We enjoyed afull week there, attending talks given by park rangers and a tourboat trip before venturing into the bay ourselves. There are severalglaciers in the park. In the 1700s, Captain Cook would have seenjust one glacier, many miles long. Now, due to global warming, that one glacier has receded into more than five smaller ones. We were able to bring Bee Weems very close to the face of the glaciers, but stayed clear of any possible collisions with calving ice. Maneuvering among “bergy bits” — small chunks of ice thathave broken free of the glacier face — was a first for us and not an experience for the faint of heart.

Our journey to Alaska was both challenging and spectacularlyrewarding. It was well worth the 20-year wait. We hope this storyinspires you to go forth and follow your cruising dreams, whereverthey may take you. ml

American Oyster catcher in flight. It’s nowonder they’ve been dubbed the bird

with the orange cigar!

These migration watches have beenstaffed by New Jersey Audubon’s CapeMay Bird Observatory for nearly fourdecades and are a popular site to visit each year. What might not be as obvious are the myriad opportunities for boatersvisiting the Cape May area to get up close and personal with local wildlife.

NO SUCH THING AS A SEAGULLWhile there is no such species as a Seagull there are many species of gull inhabiting areas. With a little practice, you’ll soon realize that you can identify anumber of them when you enter CapeMay from the ocean. Cape May is thelargest breeding colony of Laughing Gulls

in the world. This colony extends throughoutthe Intercostal Waterway from Cape Mayto Avalon and holds between 40,000 and 60,000 laughing gulls. While theirwinter plumage can be rather drab, whenthey’re all decked out in their spring andsummer finery, there really is no othermore beautiful gull. A gorgeous black hood, red bill, red legs, and white “eyeliner,” thesegulls are purely spectacular.

Other breeding gulls in the area belongto the white-headed gull complex, namelythe herring gull and great black-backedgull, the latter of which is the largest gullin the world, with the adult birds at leasteasily told by their jet-black backs. Adultherring gulls, in contrast, sport light gray

backs, black wingtips, and a bold yellowbill. You can find them in the Cape Mayharbor, and you’re likely to spot oneperched on a piling or during your landexcursions to the numerous sandy beacheson the peninsula.

Come into Cape May from the southwest during a falling tide, and you’ll undoubtedly notice the activity of birds in the rips, as gulls and terns feed voraciously on the small fish present where the brackish waters of the Delaware River meet the saline watersof the Delaware Bay and Atlantic. Whilepossible to identify birds in the rips fromland, birding by boat has a clear advantage.Several species of tern are regular in the

CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY, has long been known as a birding hotspot among

land-dwellers, sporting some amazing statistics of spring and fall migration. Over

40,000 hawks, eagles and falcons are counted each year from the Hawkwatch at

the Cape May Point State Park, and over a million waterbirds were counted from

the Avalon Seawatch between September 22 and December 22, 2014.

rips, including the smallest, the least tern. The two medium-sized terns present inlarge numbers are Forster’s and common. The larger terns are royal and Caspian, the latter being the largest tern in theworld. All of these species breed on theCape May peninsula, although some travel miles just to feed in the rips andbring their bounty back to their nests in the back bays.

THE BIRD WITH THE ORANGE CIGARAnother species regularly encountered by boat, either when coming through theCape May inlet or when cruising aroundthe point, is the American oystercatcher.Often seen perched on the groins aroundthe point, at the end of the 2nd AvenueJetty or flying in pairs between the beachesand back bay marshes, these birds have serious character! Their melodious “pipping” call can be heard sometimes before you see them — but when you do lay eyes on them, they’re unmistakable:long, thick, bright orange bill and matching eye ring, black head and bib, white belly, flesh-pink legs and black and white wings in flight.

The oystercatcher gets its name from its propensity to feed on bivalves, splittingthem open with its strong beak, eithershucking them like we do oysters, or bypounding them like a woodpecker until

it cracks the shell. These comical birds nestboth on the sandy beaches of Cape May and in the back bay marshes, and yourchances of seeing them are very good during the spring and summer.

THE COMEBACK KIDIt wasn’t long ago when the osprey was practically extirpated from New Jersey. Through the banning of the pesticide DDT and the hard work ofmany dedicated individuals, the osprey has made a comeback. In fact, in 1973,there were only 53 nesting pairs in NewJersey, in contrast to 2013, with a record of over 500 nests found and monitored.Today most boaters know what an ospreyplatform looks like — a wooden tower in the marshes of New Jersey, topped by aplatform and typically occupied by a largenest made of sticks. Osprey leave the areain the winter, heading south to areas withricher food resources, but come spring, theospreys return, and they cash in on theirhomestead claims.

Boaters entering the Cape May Harborin the spring and summer months wouldbe hard pressed to miss the ospreys breeding there. Again, as boats provide aperfect blind for wildlife viewing, it’s common to float passed an osprey platform in late summer and see the young chicks poking their heads above therim of the nest to check out what’s going

on in the world around them. It really is aspecial thing to witness, especially in lightof the fact the species was on the brink ofextirpation from New Jersey and acrossthe eastern U.S. only forty years ago.

After docking at the South Jersey Marina(609-884-2400, southjerseymarina.com)or Canyon Club Resort Marina (609-884-0199, canyonclubmarina.com),come ashore and explore the docks for little harlequin shorebirds, the ruddy turnstone, as they pick and probe at theflotsam brought ashore by fishermen andpleasure boaters alike. Stop by New JerseyAudubon’s Nature Center of Cape May(609-884-2736, njaudubon.org) across the harbor, and pick up a copy of “Birdingfor Boaters,” then hop in a kayak availablefor rent next door and head out to explore either on your own or with an expert guide. If you want a more personalized birding adventure, come byNew Jersey Audubon’s Cape May BirdObservatory on East Lake Drive, CapeMay Point, for a full roster of guidedwalks appropriate for all ages and all experience levels. Whatever you decide,Cape May has you covered with plenty of nature at your own pace, by foot, bybike and, of course, by boat. ml

When Charles II was restored to thethrone of England in 1660, he thankedsome of his loyal friends by giving them land in America. In return, they recognized this gift by dubbing the landCharles Towne. The young city was thefirst settlement in the Province of Carolina and found itself under frequentattacks from Spain, France, marauding pirates and local Native American tribes.

Walls were erected, and a battery along theeastern shore was constructed to protectthe city, which tenaciously stood itsground and grew against all odds. Slowlybut surely, Charles Towne developed into what we know and love today asCharleston.

Maybe it’s coincidence — but thenagain, maybe not — that a city that startedas a gift given to friends has become so well

known for its friendliness and hospitality.Charleston is highly regarded for its history, art, food and nature, and the cityhas worked hard to protect these treasures, staying true to its official motto of “Aedesmores juraque curat” (“she guards herbuildings, customs, and laws”).

just starting out. This drew newcomersfrom England and nearby colonies such as Bermuda and Barbados, creating an internationally diverse culture. As the new citizens and merchants establishedthemselves and achieved success, they displayed it by building grand homes. The Heyward-Washington House, built in1771, and the Edmonston-Alston House, built in 1825, are both open for tours.During the Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens (March 19-April 19) eachspring, visitors can tour many otherhomes, too — a surprising number ofthem still occupied by descendants of the original owners. The historic estates of Boone Hall Plantation and MagnoliaPlantation are a short drive outside thecity and provide a fascinating glimpse intoCharleston’s rich past.

As the city grew and prospered, leisureactivities became an increasingly importantpart of life. Charleston still boasts the firstplayhouse in America; the historic DockStreet Theatre is a wonderful place to takein some theater. This spring, don’t miss“Catch Me If You Can: The Musical.”

And King Street (including hip UpperKing Street) is a must-see while exploringCharleston’s vibrant downtown scene. Thestreet is home to an impressive array offine art galleries and clothing and jewelryboutiques. Art has always been an impor-tant part of Charleston’s culture, and Spoleto, one of the world’s premierperforming arts festivals, draws thousands

But there aresome perennial favorites that the locals return to again and again, including The Ordinary, Hominy Grill, Halls Chophouse, FIG, and Husk. For the best cappuccino in town, stop by CityLights Coffee.

Charleston’s unique location on a natural harbor at the confluence of theAshley and Cooper rivers makes it one of the easiest cities to navigate by boat, and there’s no shortage of first-class marinas to call home while visiting.Charleston City Marina (843-723-5098,charlestoncitymarina.com) is one of thefinest municipal marinas on the East Coast, offering easy tie-ups along their famousmega dock. One thing is for sure, you willnot run out of things to do during yourvisit. As the ferry approached the dock at PortTownsend, a lone sloop was beating towindward. Gracefully tacking across ourstern, the flag blue topside showed a mastof brightwork and a lapstrake hull. Shewas a wooden boat, and I knew I washome. Of all the yachts I have served asmaster, the only ones I have truly loved, sail or power, were double-planked withmahogany on oak frames. What is it aboutthe romance of wooden boats that drawsus to them? Walking along the dock, ifyou spy a yacht with varnished caprails sobright that your reflection goes deep intothe wood, you will stand there and admireher lines and hope the owner didn’t glassover the wood hull for expediency.

Wood has been the consistent and reliable fabric of boats throughout history.Trees were always an abundant source of

raw material. Today, in the era of fiberglass, aluminum and steel hulls, we are searchingfor our past. As boat owners, we want tolink our enjoyment of yachting with thosewho came before us. And one of thoseconnections is through wood.

As a boat-building material, wood fares best in the cold water of the PacificNorthwest, the Great Lakes and NewEngland. Warm tropical sea water invitesthe teredo shipworm, which eats throughwooden planks in much the same way that termites eat through the woodenfoundation of a house in Key West. Therefore, it is not surprising that in theUnited States the crafting of woodenboats is kept alive at schools and museumsabout 40 degrees north latitude and above.

How many of us have mused on the idea of putting aside our livelihoods

to pursue the dream of becoming a shipwright? You can, and you should, even if for one class. Doing that allows you to join the proud tradition of mariners who went out to sea in wooden boats.

> Be vigilant.

It may sound silly, but not paying attentionis often the culprit in these situations. Despite their size, commercial ships aregenerally quiet as they move through thewater. Look aft regularly. A ship doing 15knots, which isn’t uncommon, covers about25 feet per second. That’s 1.5 nauticalmiles in six minutes!

> Know the rules of the road.

You can be sure the professional mariners do. However, true seamanship isdemonstrated when a crew can recognizethat holding fast to the right of way maynot be the most prudent thing to do.Recreational boaters should understandthat vessels limited in their ability to maneuver, whether because of draft or theconfines of the channel, will have or needthe right of way. It is also imperative toknow that when a ship goes astern on itsengine, directional control is limited at best. And traffic density plays a role. A smallvessel forcing a commercial ship to changecourse could put others in jeopardy.

> Anticipate ship movements.

Generally, ships want to be in deep water.A look at your chart will give you a goodidea of the route a ship might take to gofrom one point to another. Use navigationalaids — are there mid-channel buoys or actual channels? When possible, remain

clear of channels and the centers of bridgespans. If you don’t require the channels for safe navigation, why be there?

> Use your VHF radio.

In inland waters, the commercial trafficcommunicates on Channel 13. The hailing and distress frequency is Channel16. Commercial vessels have at least two VHF radios on the bridge; one of them is on Channel 16. Be aware: on busy weekends, a call to a ship from a concernedboater on Channel 16 may not be heardover the other chatter. A conversation on Channel 13 might go like this: “Calling the northbound container ship off Bloody Point Light. This is thesailing vessel Temerity southbound east of Thomas Point Light.”

“This is the container ship Ever Resolute northbound at Bloody PointLight.” “Temerity back to Ever Resolute,we are a blue-hulled 42-foot sloop southbound approximately two miles offyour port bow. How would you like tomeet?” Note that the type of ship is stated, geographical position of both vesselsgiven, and a brief description of the hailing vessel related. At sea, latitude andlongitude might be used. A call is not always necessary, but if there is any questionon your part, do not hesitate to make thecall. The ships and tugboats are happy tospeak with you. A tugboat with a barge in

Imagine being out on the water with family and friends andhaving a scary encounter with a large ship or tugboat. Not onlycan this ruin your day, it can severely compromise the confidenceof your crew. As a ship pilot on the Chesapeake Bay for 41 years,I have had numerous close encounters with recreational boattraffic. Most of these situations were easily avoidable. Commonsense, knowledge and experience are huge factors in keepingboaters safe. Don’t leave the dock without them. Here are recommendations for keeping it safe.

a tight turn demands the attention of any vessel meeting them. Perhaps a better course of action would be to meet on a prearranged straightaway by communicating on your VHF.

> Forward visibility can be problematicon some commercial vessels.

Aboard ships, small vessels may disappearfrom view a half mile or more away. Agood rule of thumb for the recreationalboater is to look for the ship’s navigationbridge. If you cannot see the windows, assume you are not seen.

> Risk of collision exists when two vessels are holding a constant bearing, or nearly so, with each other.

The give-way vessel should take early andsubstantial action to ensure that this iscommunicated clearly to the stand-on vessel in a timely fashion. Keep in mindthat when it comes to commercial traffic,

you might be meeting a vessel whoselength exceeds 1,000 feet — greater than three football fields!

> AIS (Automatic Identification System) is an important aid to being seen electronically by commercial traffic.

Perhaps more importantly, it will give the recreational boater the actual name of the commercial vessel they would liketo contact. Boaters should understandthat although useful, AIS is primarily an identification system, not a collision-avoidance system. Also, AIS B (recreational)can be crowded out in a heavy AIS A(commercial) environment. AIS B signalsare not updated as frequently as AIS A,resulting in possible erroneous informationin close quarters situations.

> Understand whistle signals.

In inland waters, one whistle means “I am leaving you on my port side.” Two

whistles means “I am leaving you on mystarboard side.” Five or more short blastsis the danger whistle. This indicates thatthe whistle blower does not understandthe intentions of the other vessel or that a safe passing is in doubt. It is unlikelythat a large ship will hear the whistle signals of a recreational boat in time to avoid a close-quarters situation.

> Running in restricted visibility is challenging.

If the vessel operator does not have a clear understanding of the use of radar, poor visibility becomes positivelydangerous. Radar reflectors are helpfulbut not a guarantee that you will be seenon a commercial vessel’s radar. If possible, move to shallower water using GPS andthe depth finder to better stay out ofharm’s way.

> If underway at night, know more than just what normal navigation lights look like.

For example, a tugboat showing threewhite lights in a vertical line means thatthe length of the tow is in excess of 200meters! Cutting behind the tug couldprove fatal to the uninformed. ml

Recently retired, Bill Band is a graduate of SUNY Maritime College and was a shippilot on Chesapeake Bay (Maryland Pilots)for 41 years.

The summer tourist season offers excellent fishing though the cooler weatherduring spring provides some of the bestfishing of the year. The backwaters andcoves of Choctawatchee Bay yield redfish, trout, flounder, small jacks and sharks forlight-tackle fanatics, while tasty bottomdwellers — including several species ofsnapper, grouper and jacks — are commonin the Gulf of Mexico. Sight casting, wherea spotter perched in a tower can see bigcobia along the beaches, is a popular technique for that species. Trolling inshorewaters yield catches of speedy wahoo andking mackerel, high-flying dolphin and smalltuna, while offshore look for tailwalking billfish, including sailfish, white marlin

and blue marlin, plus dolphin, wahoo, swordfish and barrel-sized yellowfin tuna.

Tackle Tip — Label Your ReelsIf you own multiple light-tackle outfits withthe same model reel, consider spooling eachreel with a different pound-test line to adaptto different techniques and changing conditions. Today’s micro-thin diameterlines, especially braids, make it difficult to distinguish one pound-test line fromanother, and even the same pound-test line from several manufacturers will varyin diameter. After packing the reel, use an office-type label maker to label thespool/reel to indicate the pound-test line.

It was four in the morning whenthe man running down the dock startedshouting, “Jubilee! Jubilee!”

It was a sweltering August night alongthe shoreline of Mobile Bay, Alabama, sowe had our portholes open and could hearhim perfectly.

“What’s that?” Patrick rolled over andcrushed a pillow to his head, but I hadheard rumors of such a rare phenomenonand wanted to check it out.

I threw on my clothes and hurrieddown the dock after the man toward thebeach. Lights danced along the shoreline, illuminating the figures that had responded to the man’s call.

one man, dressed in a white tank topand camouflage shorts, with the word“BAMA” stretched across the back of hisballcap, held a bucket in one hand and aflashlight on a long stick in the other. Hebent down and scooped the bucketthrough the shallow water, using the lightpole as an underwater lamp.

“What’s he doing?” I asked Tom,whom I’d met the day before, as he stoodin the still-warm sand watching the show.

“It’s a jubilee. He’s catching shrimp.”

Tom nodded toward the water. Standingten feet from the shrimper, a man in theubiquitous crimson and white colors of theregion was bent at the waist picking bluecrab from the shallows and tossing theminto a steel wash basin. “There’s a load ofcrabs to be had, too.”

We wandered closer to the water. The shallows boiled with sea life floppingaround, seemingly trying to beach themselves. In a quick scan of the area I counted a dozen flounder.

“Happens each year here on the easternshore,” Tom said, passing me his lanternand wading into the warm water. “Just before sunrise, once or twice a summer, the fish are driven to shore by a pocket of unoxygenated water. A dead zone, if you will.”

“do they die?” I asked, unsure if thiswas the same thing as a red tide.

Tom shook his head. “only the onesthat are caught.”

He held out a four-foot stick with tineslike a pitchfork on its end. “Shine the lightover here, would you?” He pointed to theleft where three flat, bottom-huggingflounder slithered on top of each other.

“They become real slow and sloppy because of the lack of oxygen and are easy

to catch.” He thrust the gig into one of theflounder and stabbed him right behind the eyes. “There’s been jubilees where guysclaim to have caught a hundred flounderin just an hour.” He strung the flounder on a long length of wire and looped itthrough his belt, the fish hanging from his side like a set of keys. He speared andstrung four more fish as he spoke. “Thingis, it only lasts an hour or so. As soon as the wind blows or the tide changes, mixing oxygened water back in, the fishcan breathe again and scatter back to the depths.”

I looked down at the warm water lapping at my bare feet. The wild scrambleof flounder, shrimp, crabs and even an eelor two was the densest concentration ofsea life I’d ever seen. They were slow andstaggering, almost drunk-like, through the shallows. They put up little fight atbeing caught.

A bell rang farther down the beach.Slowly, as the call of “Jubilee!” went out,the beach filled with people. Some arrivedwith casting nets, some with flounder gigslike Tom’s, some with buckets. “I seen onewoman out here with a laundry basket one year,” Tom told me. His loop was nowstretched tight, and the feathery tails of

mobile, ala. has mild springs, falls and

winters and hot summers, but all seasons offer

ample activities to enjoyoutside year round.

the flounder trailed though the water. He unbuckled the wire from his belt

and handed it to me. “Here, this is for you.”“Are you sure?” I asked, reminded of

how much I loved the Southern spirit ofgenerosity and hospitality.

“Sure thing, sweetie.” Tom winked atme in the predawn light. “I’ll get morethan me and the missus can eat before the tide changes.”

And sure enough, he did. Withintwenty minutes, Tom’s second line was full.

A slight breeze blew wisps of my hair

across my face.Tom looked up and studied the sky.

“That’ll be the end of it.”I looked down at the water at his feet.

What once was alive with squirming, squiggling fish was now noticeably stillerand less crowded.

Tom swung the forked end of his stickinto the air and held it like Poseidon’s trident. He patted the again-heavy stringof flounder on his hip. “Good thing we got here early.”

We turned and walked back up the

dock as the last of the flounder retreatedto deeper water.

I held up the string he had given me.“I’m glad someone called out. Thank you.”

“My pleasure.” The lines beside his eyescrinkled deeper. “Won’t be another untilnext year now. Just make sure you listenfor the cry of ‘Jubilee!’” ml
