INTRODUCTION

Buying a marine air conditioning system is not — and should not be — something you do often. If you purchase wisely you will

own a system that lasts many years and functions with reliability that keeps you and your passengers comfortable year round.

Not all air conditioning systems are created equal, and therefore, will not produce the same results. High-quality, innovative engineering affects all aspects of product development. It permeates the system from operational design concept, to the choice of materials, to the ease with which the system can be installed and maintained.

But great design and quality workmanship are only part of the picture. Your air conditioning system is being installed on a boat, where it must perform in a harsh marine environment.

Be sure the system you choose comes from a manufacturer with a long history of producing marine-rugged air conditioning and a reputation for quality innovations.

Consider these 5 critical factors when buying an efficient, environmentally friendly air conditioning system that is also a pleasure to use:

1 Optimized Marine Design for Maximized Efficiency

2 Confirm Proper HVAC System Sizing & Product Selection

3 Reduce Noise

1 OPTIMIZED MARINE DESIGNFOR MAXIMIZED EFFICIENCY

HOW DO INDUSTRY EXPERTS DEFINE EFFICIENCY VS. INEFFICIENCY?

Technological expertise and attention to detail mean the difference between a bulky inefficient system and one that is engineered to be smaller in size, use fewer amps, install more quickly, and produce increased output.

This was the result when Dometic engineering used the Six Sigma design process to engineer the Turbo self-contained air conditioning system for the Cruisair and Marine Air brands. That revolutionary new design won the prestigious IBEX Innovation Award and quickly became the preferred and most requested air conditioner in the world by marine-product dealers and distributors.

n REDUCED STANDING WATER IN DRAIN PAN

Dometic designed a rust-free molded composite drain pan with sloped channels (A) that provide positive water flow to the drains for quick removal of condensate water. Installers choose from 1 to 3 easy-to-plumb pop-out drain holes with tapered threaded drain fittings for quick attachment. As an extra convenience, a lifting handle (B) was also molded into the drain pan.

RESULT: Standing water in drain pan is reduced up to 85%.

n BLOWER IS QUIETER, MORE EFFICIENT, MORE VERSATILE

Dometic designed an enclosed-motor, high-velocity blower which can be rotated 270° with a single adjustment screw (C). The unique inlet ring optimizes air flow and ensures that the height of the unit does not increase when the blower is rotated.

RESULT: Blower is quieter and more powerful; installation time reduced.

n REDUCED FOOTPRINT AND HEIGHT

Dometic designed the unit for the smallest possible footprint and height and also reduced its weight.

RESULT: Height reduced up to 17%; depth reduced by eliminating blower-motor overhang to provide more flexibility in where the system can fit in confined interior spaces.

n REDUCED VIBRATION AND NOISE WHEN OPERATING

Dometic designed a mounting system that incorporates multiple levels of vibration isolation that include cushioned vibration mounts (D)

inserted into the bottom of the molded condensate drain pan, specially designed mounting clips with built-in isolators (E), and isolation mounts between the compressor and the drain

pan. An optional molded sound shield for the compressor is available when maximum noise mitigation is desired.

RESULT: Vibration from the unit to the deck is virtually eliminated; operating noise is reduced to a minimum.

n BOOSTED CAPACITY AND REDUCED AMPERAGE DRAW

Using Dometic’s automated parametric test lab, Dometic engineers optimized the performance of each component in the system while minimizing power consumption.

RESULT: Capacity was increased up to 21% and amperage draw was reduced up to 27% while reducing the overall size of the unit.

n EASIER INSTALLATION AND SERVICING

Dometic designed a new chassis layout that made all critical components easily accessible, and an electric box that can be remote-mounted up to 3 ft. (1 m) away.

RESULT: Installation time is reduced by 10-20 minutes and service time is also reduced to minimize labor costs.

GREEN GAS REFRIGERANT CHOICES

Another key element that determines the efficiency of an air conditioning system is the effectiveness of its refrigerant gas. Look for units that are designed to optimize the selected refrigerant.

EnvironmentallyResponsible

A few of the new green gas blends are essentially drop-in replacements for equipment originally designed for R-22, but these alternatives typically result in a loss of system performance. So a system that once produced 16,000 BTUs may only produce 11,000 BTUs with the new gas. Unfortunately, some manufacturers have not updated their BTU label ratings after the switch to an alternate refrigerant.

Misleading labeling can play havoc when properly sizing a system for the boat’s load factors, so these systems should be avoided when trying to optimize energy efficiency.

The strongest performer of the green gases is R-410A. It not only outperforms its counterparts, it also outperforms R-22 by 6%.

Many manufacturers avoid R-410A because they must redesign their product components to withstand the 60% higher pressure.

Cruisair and Marine Air chose to embrace the performance benefits of R-410A through an innovative re-engineering of their entire product lines.

HIGH-PERFORMING R-410A

When Dometic set out to develop a totally new self-contained marine air conditioning unit, the engineering team embarked on a massive R&D effort to re-engineer every component, from the inside out, using Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) principles.

Step 1: Listen to the Customer

The engineers polled boatbuilders, distributors and dealers about what they wanted: A smaller, lighter product with improved performance and lower amperage draw. They also asked for a quieter, high-velocity blower that would be easy to rotate for discharge in any direction. They requested better condensate removal, quieter operation, less vibration, rust-proof components, and easier serviceability.

Step 2: Develop Design Goals

Based on the customer feedback, Dometic engineers compiled a weighted list of attributes, then used DFSS tools to analyze results and develop a list of 44 specific design goals.

Step 3: Design and Test Prototypes

The engineering team went to work developing alternative designs and testing prototypes in Dometic’s computer-controlled

automated parametric test lab, where they can alter components and operating conditions to test for efficiency. Each component was optimized to increase capacity while minimizing power consumption.

Step 4: The Finished Product

The new Turbo incorporated a number of patent-pending innovations which met or surpassed all major

design challenges, and went on to win the coveted Innovation Award at the 2007 IBEX trade show.

2 CONFIRM PROPER HVAC SYSTEMSIZING & PRODUCT SELECTION

Getting the properly sized system for your boat requires more than providing cabin dimensions. Elements such as architectural design and cabin function affect system performance and BTU requirements.

An air conditioning system that is too small will have long and frequent run times that drain electrical power. An air conditioning system that is too large will have run times too short to provide effective dehumidification.

Work with a manufacturer or installation professional that can accurately interpret all the factors that add load to your cooling system, such as:

n Are there windows that permit sunlight to heat the cabin? n Is there a large salon that requires multiple ducts? n Are there electronic components that generate heat? n Which areas are above, mid, or below deck? n Will the boat travel in moderate or tropical waters?

Once you know your BTU requirements and unique vessel demands, you can select the best type of air conditioning system for your boat. Choices include self-contained direct-expansion systems, remote direct-expansion systems, and chilled water systems.

INVESTIGATE BROAD PRODUCT SELECTION OPTIONS

n SELF-CONTAINED AIR CONDITIONING

A self-contained air conditioner has all major components mounted on a single chassis. It is installed in the living area, usually under a bunk or settee, or in a locker. Cooling-only models as well as reverse-cycle heat pump units are available. A single unit can cool an individual cabin, or it can be ducted to 2 or more cabins to save space and cost.

n SPLIT (REMOTE) AIR CONDITIONING

A split system has the air conditioning components split between two separate units. The two units are installed in different locations and connected by insulated copper tubing through which the refrigerant travels. The condensing unit, consisting of compressor, seawater condenser, and electrical components, is mounted in the engine room or other mechanical space. The evaporating unit includes the evaporator coil and a blower, and is installed in the living area.

n CHILLED WATER AIR CONDITIONING

A chilled water system can air condition many cabins using a water loop instead of refrigerant between the chiller and the air handlers. It consists of a chiller, located in the engine room, that cools (or heats) fresh water, which is pumped through an insulated piping loop out to air handlers located in the living spaces, where the cabin air is cooled (or heated). Cruisair and Marine Air chiller systems can be configured to provide capacities of 16,000 to 2.88 million BTUs. These systems offer flexible load management and reduced peak electrical load.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHAT TO AVOID

Look for an air conditioning system that is sized properly for your boat’s dimensions, architectural features, and region of travel.

Avoid air conditioning systems that don’t address all the areas and features of your boat, such as large windows and electronics that generate heat. These factors must be considered when sizing your system.

Page 7: Marine-AC.Com - 5 Things You Need to Know Before Buying a Marine Air Conditioning System

CHOOSE ALL YOUR OPTIONS FROM THE BROADEST SELECTION AVAILABLE

No matter how well an air conditioning component works, it does you no good if it doesn’t fit into your boat.

Look for a marine air conditioning manufacturer that understands the space constraints of boat design and provides solution-based equipment and custom-built products.

Look for self-contained units that minimize the installation footprint while offering easily rotatable blowers.

Look for a range of air handlers that are adapted to various needs. For example, Cruisair and Marine Air both offer tall and thin air handlers that fit inside narrow walls as well as short and long air handlers that fit above ceilings.

n EASY OPERATION AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON

The digital control of a marine air conditioning system is much more than a thermostat. It is your interface with the system to input customized programming information and learn of any system faults that may have occurred.

n THE VALUE OF CUSTOM ENGINEERING

Sometimes standard equipment just won’t do the job. Your boat might need extra BTU power or a specially shaped configuration to fit into an awkward area.

It is important to find a manufacturer that has experience producing custom systems:

n Do their engineers work with the ship’s architect to properly size the system?

n Do their engineers work creatively to build equipment to the size and shape of the space available?

n Do their engineers supervise the installation? n Is their production facility accustomed to building unique systems

with the same quality as their standard systems?

YOU NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT FOR SPECIAL AREAS

A comfortable environment is not only important for living quarters. There are many areas onboard where vessel safety can become temperature dependent.

n PROTECT YOUR RADAR EQUIPMENT

Safe navigation relies on your ship’s radar and communications equipment, and as with all electronics, overheating leads to equipment failure. The Radome Environmental Control Unit (ECU) is specifically designed to work within the dome enclosure, ensuring optimum temperatures for the critical equipment inside.

n VISIBILITY AND SAFETY GO HAND IN HAND

The Pilot House Defroster is designed to maintain clear vision in all kinds of weather by removing any moisture or condensation that may form on the inside of a windshield.

In order to accommodate the wide range of styles and number of glass areas, the Pilot House Defroster incorporates individual ducts dedicated to each pane so that all surface areas are treated.

n STAY COOL ON DECK WHILE PILOTING

Easily installed in confined spaces like flybridge dashboards and consoles, Dash Air delivers high-velocity cold or hot air onto the bridge, cockpit or deck. Thanks to an innovative horizontal compressor, this self-contained unit stands just 8 in. (203 mm) high.

n STAY COOL ON DECK WHILE RELAXING

CoolBreeze from Cruisair provides an efficient, compact solution for generating cool air outside the living space by cooling the people, not the area. Enhance your enjoyment of outdoor dining areas, lounge areas, and sport-fishing decks while CoolBreeze’s directional jets blow chilled air right on you.

n MAXIMIZE YOUR FRESH AIR

Keep the interior full of fresh treated air on large boats and commercial vessels with fresh air make-up units for chilled water air conditioning systems. Fresh outside air is dehumidified and brought to a comfortable temperature then put into the ventilation system while an extraction unit moves stale air out of the ship.

ELIMINATE STARTUP SPIKES WITHOUT A GENERATOR UPGRADE

Another way to conserve power is simply to require less of it at the instant the demand is highest. This was the inspiration behind the Dometic SmartStart™, a device that smooths out startup power demand instead of spiking it.

A device like the SmartStart, wired directly into the air conditioning system’s electrical box, eases the strain on the generator. In some cases, the need to upgrade to a larger generator can be eliminated.

The chart below shows the difference in amps required when starting an air conditioning system with and without the SmartStart device.

HOW TO BE SMART WITH YOUR GENERATOR

Why You Should Avoid Oversized Generators

“The generator’s control circuit would trip and stop the generator due to the inrush of the Emiko’s heat pump.

The SmartStart Control reduced that inrush of current so the generator would continue to run. We started with an inrush of 77 amps and finished with an inrush of only 20 amps. [The SmartStart] is a great solution to our problem.”

— John Poole, Poole Refrigeration Service M/V Emiko (37´ Nordic Tug)

SMARTSTART™ TESTIMONIAL

Since you rely on your generator to power all your electrical devices, you might think bigger is better. In fact, right-sizing your generator is a far better strategy than oversizing.

To prevent long-term degradation, large generators driven by diesel engines require constant monitoring by a special system that makes sure they operate at or above 60% capacity. If the amperage load is below this point, the monitoring system switches in a dummy load called a “load bank” (typically seawater-cooled heaters) to draw current from the generator and basically discard it into the seawater as heat.

Although this increases the load above the minimum threshold, it is obviously not energy efficient since the generator is burning more fuel to produce more power that is simply being discarded by the dummy load. Fuel is burned so amps can be wasted.

A better choice is to choose a generator that is correctly sized. Because the air conditioning system’s compressor startup creates one of the boat’s largest electrical loads, the size of the generator is largely determined by that power demand. This can be significantly reduced, however, if a SmartStart (for single-phase power) or a VFD (for 3-phase power) is used in conjunction with the air conditioning system.

The generator can be sized smaller, thus reducing the size of the load bank and reducing overall fuel consumption.

3 REDUCE NOISE & SLEEP BETTER

Noise is any sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired. It’s not something you want to have on your boat.

Noise has detrimental effects on humans, creating hearing loss, irritation, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, and stress. Noise also has detrimental effects on marine life, and noise vibrations from inside your boat are easily transmitted into the water.

A tranquil environment, comfortable conversation, and a good night’s sleep are difficult to obtain if your air conditioning system is too noisy.

When selecting an air conditioning system, be sure to consider its decibel level. Was the system designed to minimize noise?

n Look for cushioned vibration-isolation devices at all mounting contact points.

n Look for compressors designed to run more quietly. n Look for quiet blowers with enclosed motors. n Look for other sound-muffling technology or purchase a sound shield

for the compressor.

THE TURBO COMPRESSOR SOUND SHIELD PROVIDES UP TO 50% NOISE REDUCTION

The Turbo self-contained air conditioning system is already unique in its attention to noise reduction, as demonstrated on pages 3 - 5. To further reduce noise levels, the optional Turbo sound shield attacks compressor noise at its source.

The compact, molded cover fits over the compressor to provide maximum noise reduction with a 6 mm lining of sound-absorbent closed-cell neoprene. The Turbo sound shield is available for all Turbo models, and installation takes just minutes.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHAT TO AVOID

Look for systems that are designed to minimize noise through the use of vibration-isolation mounting points, quieter compressors, compressor sound shields, and enclosed blower motors.

Avoid irritating, noisy, vibrating systems that keep you awake.

Decibels (dB) are an expression of the relative loudness of sounds in air as perceived by the human ear. The dynamic range of human hearing is about 120 decibels, spanning from barely audible (0dB) to the threshold of pain (120dB and higher).

On the decibel’s logarithmic scale, an increase of approximately 3dB is perceived as a doubling of intensity.

4 IMPROVE AIR QUALITY & REDUCE ODORS

Let’s face it: Boats don’t always smell good. They are often musty from being closed up in a humid environment, they may have less than optimum toilet facilities, and diesel and other fumes often permeate the cabins.

Good air quality is essential for good health. It affects every cell of your body. And of course, having unpleasant odors on board can ruin a boating trip.

MICROPARTICLE AIR FILTER

Clean air is just as important inside your boat as it is inside your home. All air conditioning systems require an air filter to keep the coils clean, so why not choose a filter that will also improve the quality of the air that you breathe?

Dometic’s Breathe Easy Microparticle Air Filter is independently rated at MERV 7, which filters out particles in the 0.3 to 3.0 micron range. Standard marine air conditioning filters only capture particles that are 10 microns and larger. Contaminants in the 0.3 to 3.0 micron range include bacteria, tobacco smoke, mold spores, auto emissions, and insecticide dust.

Breathe Easy air filters come in sizes for all Cruisair and Marine Air systems, and for most air conditioning systems on the market. These are disposable filters, and their service life is dependent on the environment where they are installed.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

WHAT TO AVOID

n Microparticle air filters with MERV 7 rating or higher.

n Non-ozone-producing UV air purifiers.

n Photocatalytic nano-mesh technology for maximum effectiveness.

n Noticeable reduction of odors and pollutants.

n Flimsy air filters designed only to protect the A/C system, not your health.

n UV air purifiers that produce ozone.

n Ineffective photocatalytic components.

n Poor performance in removing odors and pollutants.

REDUCE SMOKE, ODORS & BACTERIA ON BOARD

Instead of holding your breath (or your nose) while on board, you can relax and enjoy the air. Cleaner, healthier air starts right inside your boat if your marine air conditioning system includes an ultraviolet (UV) catalytic air purifier.

Dometic’s Breathe Easy UV Air Purifier installed in the ducting helps purify the air going into the cabins as it leaves the blower. A smaller, portable unit is also available for cabins of 100 square feet (9.3 square meters) or less. Air quality continuously improves with each pass through the purifier.

Air quality is enhanced as unpleasant odors and unhealthy mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and fumes are reduced. Volatile organic compounds are also reduced, and the cleaner air may lessen allergy and asthma symptoms.

The three-dimensional photocatalytic nano-mesh structure provides maximum surface area for maximum elimination of airborne contaminants that contact it. The nano-mesh structure, a metalized foam, creates very little static pressure for little or no reduction in air flow.

The minutely intricate nano-mesh structure provides 2200% more surface area for holding the molecular catalytic coating than is possible with a simple screen structure. In addition, through the science of nanotechnology, the titanium-dioxide catalyst is restructured at the molecular level to have an increased number of contact surfaces. This formation puts 70% more atoms on the contact surface and dramatically improves reactivity with contaminants.

“The crew had consistent problems with sore throats and coughs. So we’ve gone to Dometic. We discovered the air…went from being almost heavy and saturated to being a lot lighter. It was easier to breathe…cleaner. It’s fantastic.”

— James Rose-Innes, First Mate, Cheoy Lee 95’, Fort Lauderdale, FL

“After cleaning up a diesel fuel leak from the generator, we still had a persistent petroleum odor. I installed the portable Breathe Easy Air Purifier in the galley. A week later all odors were completely eliminated.”

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH?

Indoor air can easily be five times more polluted than outdoor air. Unpleasant odors are an obvious sign of poor air quality, but many chemical contaminants are odorless. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emanate from some carpets, fabrics, furnishings, and other commonly used products.

Mold spores and pollen are often undetectable by scent, and are more frequently evidenced through physical reactions like coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and watery eyes. Viruses and bacteria get trapped indoors and also contaminate the air.

“ Risk for illness does not necessarily vary with the type of mold or the extent of contamination.”

— US Center for Disease Control

REDUCE ALLERGY AND ASTHMA SYMPTOMS

Seventy-five percent of people live with someone who has allergies, asthma, or some other respiratory disease. Common particles such as dust, pollen, and pet dander aggravate these conditions and easily enter the confines of a boat.

Pollen is the most pervasive allergen. Just opening an exterior door can allow millions of these particles inside. Even pets that are bathed frequently can collect and carry pollen, dust, mold, and other allergens on their fur.

Reducing allergens from your air may reduce symptoms of allergies and asthma.
