Marine South Expo

The Marine Military Expos

showcase the latest innovations in

equipment, trailblazing computer

simulations and state-of-the art

technology systems designed

specificcaly for the U.S. marine

Corps. The 2012 shows will

provide today's Marine with the

newest systems, services,

technology and prototypes.

The dates for the upcoming

Expo is April 11-12 at Camp

Lejeune, (Semper Fi magazine)

Over the past 2 yrs I have had the opportunity to build on the

Detachments infancy. We have more than doubled our

membership, as well as our savings, giving us the opportunity to

help Marines in a financial crisis, donate for toys for kids and

send care packages to Marines in Iraq and Afganistan. We have

held 3 successful fundraisers, acquired a centrally located

meeting location and started a breakfast club, all with your help.

I alone could not have done it without the support of many. As I

step down this month, I wish the new Commandant, Roger Wolf,

the same great accomplishments during his charge. I will be

stepping into the seat as Junior Vice and hope to continue to help

the Detachment grow. Semper Fi, Joe Atkins

Senior Vice CommandantWe have come to another year; I once again have been given

the honor to serve as your Sr. Vice for another year. I want to

thank all the folks who continue to support me. I'm looking

forward to another fun filled year! Congratulations to our new

Commandant, Roger Wolf! Please give him all your support and

help, as you did for our past Commandant. He will help us build

the Hampstead League just as Joe Atkins did on his watch.

Everyone should be receiving their tickets soon for the

up-coming fund-raising dinner. If you do not get yours, please let

me know. Semper Fi Freddie Saavedra

P a y m a s t e r ' s R e p o r tThe balance in our account is currently just under $5900.00 The success of our fundraisers

continues to put us in a position to contribute monetarily to our community and Marines in need. In

the last quarter, the detachment has sponsored a coach-pitch Softball team in the Topsail Girls

Softball Organization. (Their season is currently in full swing, come out and support our team) We

are also still sending care packages to Marines deployed to Afghanistan.

Please note that the fundraisers we hold semi-annually are the largest source of income for our

detachment. Our only other income is from membership dues ($15), donations, and the 50/50

drawing at the end of each meeting. I would like to say thank you to all of you who have donated your

winnings from the 50/50. It is not required, but greatly appreciated.

We currently have a couple of members who are delinquent for 2011 dues. If you are unsure of

when you are up for renewal, please feel free to contact me.

A quick reminder for those members who are actively trying to recruit new members, the cost for

membership in the MCL is $42.00. The detachment gets to keep only $15.00 of this. The remainder

is sent to the National Adjutant/Paymaster ($18 dues, $5.00 one time membership application fee)

and the North Carolina Adjutant/Paymaster ($4 dues).

Junior Vice Commandant stepping down

First off, I wish to thank the membership in voting me into the office of Junior Vice Commandant

for the preceding year. I would have liked to have held same for a second term, but, I have been

replaced by a younger, more hard charging individual. One (Joe Adkins) and I know he will do a

wonderful job.

In Feb 2012,1 was fortunate to attend the Mid Winter National Conference in Tysons Corner, Va.

This was a great meeting, especially because of the close proximity to HQMC. We were briefed by

BGen Webber (Congressional Liaison);BGen Paul Kennedy (Public Affairs Officer); LtGen Williams

(Chief of Staff); Former Commandant Al Gray; and SgtMaj of the Marine Corps, Michael Barret).

We now have Marines stationed in 27 different countries, several of which are in Africa and a

MAG in Australia.

A reminder that8.2% of the national budget is allocated to the Marine Corps, but we have 31% of

the ground forces, 18% of Air and 17% of helicopters. Which goes to prove that we, the Marine

Corps, can do more with less than any other military service.

Again, thank you for letting me serve you. Elmer Hodges
