Meetings

Fall 2016 Meeting Our Fall 2016 meeting was held at the Niles Shrine Country Club on 6 October 2016 featuring Mark Tomas as the guest speaker. Mark is Raytheon’s Senior Manager of Whole Life Readiness Services & Full Service Partnering Center co-located with NUWC-Keyport. Mark provided a site overview of their work which includes the Mk54 lightweight torpedo common parts, Mod 0 torpedo kits, spares and support. They also provide whole life support to the US and international Navies. It was great to reconnect with our Engineering Service Center (ESC) past.

Officers The current slate of officers, with their contact info, is:

President Rick Doden 360-689-7590 [email protected] Vice President Open

Past President Larry Armbruster 425-348-3734 [email protected] Web Master Mike Goodreau 206-779-7565 [email protected] Secretary-Treasurer Lorie Burleigh 425-231-7341 [email protected] Newsletter Editor Lee Brissey 425-482-0536 [email protected] Historian Pat Maes 425-745-1203 [email protected]

MSEA thanks Lee Brissey for assuming position of Newsletter Editor and Pat Maes for taking on Historian duties.

Volunteer Needed: We still do not have a volunteer for the vice-president position. The continuity of the association depends on volunteers to assume the leadership roles. The leadership jobs are neither difficult nor long. The VP’s primary responsibility is to secure speakers for the meeting and the duty lasts for one year, just two meetings. Other members of the association support this activity with suggestions so you usually don’t have to find a speaker from scratch. The VP then assumes the role of President for one year. If there isn’t a VP, we will have to consider options such as eliminating speakers from future luncheons. So please give serious consideration to volunteering. Contact Rick re the Vice President or prepare to be “Volunteered!”

Member News From Donna Golden: We will not be able to attend the October meeting because we'll be traveling in our RV, going to Carmel, CA to visit Bryan's son. In June, we took a fabulous RV trip to southern Utah to visit the amazing National Parks there--Zion, Bryce, north rim of the Grand Canyon, Arches & Canyon lands. Beautiful! Bryan always enjoys the luncheon & hopefully we'll be able to attend in the spring. He just celebrated his 91st birthday in August & although he's getting a little more frail physically, his mind is great & we are enjoying life! From Joan Bayley: I am now living in Gig Harbor to try it out. I am renting a house and my condo in Seattle has been leased for two years.

From John Balk:Christa and I experienced a number of milestones we would like to share with our Honeywell friends. On May 28th, 2016 Christa and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with dear friends at a dinner we hosted at Salish Lodge, Snoqualmie Falls. I prepared a photo book to share with everyone how we met, our dating, engagement, wedding in Switzerland, reception, and honeymoon ending in Paris, etc. My narration of the many miscues involved in these episodes put big smiles on all our faces since I was the cause of most of the mistakes. Then on 9/19/16, with the help of Christa's many friends, I pulled off a perfect surprise 75th Birthday Party! We had friends arrive from all corners of the Pacific Northwest. We had unique problems like hiding all the parked cars and we had guests hiding in three separate large rooms of the Party House. It was a total surprise and Christa's favorite expression of, "NO WAY" was recorded on film for posterity. Finally, on 2/12/17, on Abe Lincoln's birthday, I, John Balk, turned 80 years old. I cannot believe I've lasted this long. I've enjoyed every bit of it especially my years at 3 different divisions of Honeywell. But the best years were at Marine Systems Division where I was fortunate to meet the exceptionally talented, caring, staff. True friends were made and I'll always feel thankful for all of you who allowed me into the Family.

From Sharron Schmidt: Please publish this picture of my daughter, Karen, and granddaughter Abby. Abby is eleven. I would really appreciate it. Having a great life in Bandon Oregon. …… Sharron

From Terry Corcoran: Terry and Lin Corcoran celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary. "What a wonderful wife!"

From Mary Burggraff: Last fall I legally changed my name from Christenson back to Mary Burggraff. It feels right to again have the same name as my four sons and their families. (Christenson may have possibly not even been noticed by the many of you who continued to refer to me as Mary B.)

From Rodger Sorenson: Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend any upcoming meetings because, as of last September, we are residing permanently in Tucson. After 40+ years on Mason Lake and doing the snow-bird thing for the last 18+ years, since I retired, we decided to sell our place last summer. The waterfront prices and the real estate market were both excellent and we closed the sale on September 21. We loved the lake and it was a wonderful place to live in the summer but it was also a lot of work and expense. We still plan to travel north for a couple of months in the summer but it will be primarily towards Minnesota to spend some time with my Mother who is still doing pretty good at 96 years old. We also have several other relatives and friends in the upper Midwest area that we are planning to try and visit during our summer travels. We also have a daughter and granddaughter here in Tucson so residing permanently works good for us and we love the weather and the area. Our son still lives near Mason Lake so he will be coming south to visit us now during the fall and winter. I have stayed in touch with Doug Buchanan over the years so I generally keep up-to-date on any MSD related news that Doug picks up and I also maintain contact with John Anderson who lives here in Tucson after he retired from Raytheon a few years ago. I send along my very best regards to everyone…Rodger From Ken Prentiss: Ken and Mary Lou Prentiss are going to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary with "one last cruise" from Venice to Rome via the Greek Islands ... May 23 to June 4, 2017. Ken says that they splurged this time, booked a cabin with a window (!) and will therefore miss the Spring meeting. Best wishes to you all…..Ken & Mary Lou

From Ray Castor: Ray and Chery had a wonderful year in 2016. In addition to still working part time with some of the old Honeywell crew at Leidos (SAIC spin off) we travelled to Cabo, Hawaii, Scandinavia and SE Asia. Scandinavia included 2 weeks on land followed by a 2-week cruise of the Norwegian fjords up to the north cape where the Barents and Norwegian seas meet. Late last year we travelled to SE Asia for 6 weeks with Steve and Carol Szender (see picture) from the old Honeywell & newer Leidos days. The trip included time in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indonesia (Bali) and Singapore. Great trip! Part of the rest of the year was spent completing our new cabin on Prince of Wales island in the archipelago of SE Alaska. Great fishing, crabbing, shrimping and enjoying the wilderness. What was left was spent enjoying family - 3 kids and 8 grandkids. Sorry we will miss the spring get together, but we will be (surprise) in Alaska.

From Jim Gordon: Believe I may be a voice from your distant past. Worked with you, Dick Abbey, Curt Roselle, Norm Miller, and Hal Clark (to a lesser extent) on a series of programs under the HARP umbrella in the 1970's. Was then with the engineering staff at Honeywell Training and Control Systems Center in West Covina, CA. Have stayed in touch with Dick Abbey for all these years. All that not-withstanding, I had a brief phone conversation with Chuck Preble, who suggested passing on the following for a possible “mentioned in dispatches” in the Marine Systems Employees’ Association Newsletter, for those who might be interested…. Jim Gordon (Sun Lakes, AZ)

From Bob Twigg: Thought I would contribute to your request. Since retirement I have:

• Sold and bought a new home in Bothell; Written two books. Working on a sequel to the second book. • Created a blog; HOA President; Installed solar panels to get off the grid as much as possible • I draw pictures of people’s dogs that have passed away. (I call them my 3D drawings (Dead Dog Drawings) • Applied and received a patent on a new 3-dimensional game within a cylinder that up to eight players can play. • Larry (Armbruster) and I have done a little volunteer work. That’s about it – Enjoying retirement.

From Ron Delarose: Since my retirement from Raytheon in the spring of 2004, Teresa have had a rather unusual journey. Growing up as rather poor kids in Seattle and then being able to retire in our early 50’s was quite a blessing to us. So, we set out to give something back to our community. That led us to taking in a 2-year old African American foster child who desperately need our help. That experience was extraordinary. We loved caring for him and he loved staying with us in Mukilteo. Even though we were not planning to take in many kids for foster care, we found that there was such a great need and we loved having the kids. As such, we have ended up taking placement of 127 kids to-date. Most of these were babies and toddlers. Also, we originally had not planned to adopt any of them, but we have now adopted a baby girl (Allie) and a baby boy (Josiah). Allie is now 5 years old and Josiah is 18 months. So now we are a family of four. We needed to upsize the housing situation, so we moved from the townhouse across from the former work place in Mukilteo to a larger home. So, we now have a home in the middle of Harbour Point Golf course. We stay quite busy with care of the house. However, we spend lots of time just having fun. Love to take the kids in the RV and go as far as we can. The Pacific ocean beaches tend to be our favorite destination. We hope to do an around the US trip in the future. Trips to Sparta Greece have been on hold since we have had little ones. I have stayed in touch with my Greek relatives. We will be able to travel more when Josiah gets a little older. We also still have the racing sailboat “Zeus" at Shilshole. Do not race anymore, but we still love boat trips. We did more skiing this winter. Allie has learned to ski. We ski at Stevens and Baker. Allie stays very active with ballet, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and preschool. I have many activities with our Greek Orthodox Church. I sing in the local choir as well as a choir in San Francisco. Have recorded two CD’s of Church music over the last several years. I worked very hard on the building of a new Church hall, which was completed in 2012. I help with the administration of the Church and also take care of the audio systems. Teresa is a professor at the UW and still teaches a class or two each year. In May, I will be celebrating 45years in Acoustic Engineering. I have been working on a design project at Teknologic, which is going well and hopefully will lead to a Navy contract soon. I do enjoy seeing all of you at the get-togethers. Hope to hear what others are doing in retirement. See you soon…..Ron Passages From Tom Ramus: Just a quick note to let everyone know that my wife, Susan, of 50 1/2 years passed away last April. She was rushed to the Hospital, but they were not able to restart her heart. I will not be coming up to Washington this year so will not attend the MSEA luncheon. I am still living in Yuma, AZ and very involved in the local Ham Radio clubs and Emergency Services including Skywarn. (A volunteer organization that helps keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service) Gordon Cash passed away at the Life Care Center in Friday Harbor Washington on January 20, 2017 at the age of 83. For the last seven years Gordon was lovingly cared for by his wife Margaret after he suffered a spinal cord injury from a fall. They moved to their “summer” home three years ago to eliminate stairs from their lives and have much enjoyed life on San Juan Island. Margaret reports that Gordon was loving and tenacious to the end. Margaret would welcome any contact from friends/colleagues of Gordon. She can be reached at 360-370-5003.
