Bev Ford, Executive Director

“Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the moment you’ve been waiting for…” And we invite you to step right up to some of the ‘GREATEST SHOWS’ to take the Palace stage!

The invitation is open to all. Come laugh with us. Cry with us. Sing with us and soak it all in. Bring your friends or make some new ones. Sit back and reminisce about the first time you heard a song, while letting the music carry you back to that day. Celebrate those old memories but make plenty of new ones.

This line-up includes local companies and artistic teams who will gather around shared projects again this season to bring you their talent and a production they’re proud to share.

We’ll be serving up laughter with our Improv in the May series and cranking up the music with Music in the May.

Looking for a way to get up and get moving? Join us for the Palace Academy of the Arts, where we are offering opportunities for active involvement. Classes include yoga (beginner and advanced), Tappercize, Broadway Dancercize, acting classes for all ages, Music in Motion for 3-5 year olds, dance basics, voice, piano, and more. If you’re not sure which class is for you, we invite you to “Try It On For Size,” with a one-time, $5 trial to the class of your choice.

Whether on stage, in a class, or in your seat, the arts have the power to bring us to a common encounter; yet leave us with a unique impact. This season we invite you to experience the performing arts in a meaningful way, right here at the historic Marion Palace Theatre.

With an exciting season planned for your enjoyment, we think you’ll agree the Palace is the place to be.

On behalf of the board, the staff and our volunteers, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the ‘GREATEST SHOWS.’

lOGOWear

Through the years we have experienced first-hand the generosity and support of this community and the thousands of individuals who enjoy the very existence of this iconic organization. Many have inquired how they can help keep the Palace an active, thriving facility. We’re happy to give you some ideas! The opportunities are many, and we’ll use this space to highlight just a few.

Help create awareness by sporting some of the Theatre’s newest logowear. From snuggly soft t-shirts to sturdy tote bags,

warm cozy blankets, stylish hats, and more, there is a large variety of Marion

Palace Theatre gear available through River’s Edge Embroidery. Check out all we have in our online store by visiting

the website (www.marionpalace.org) and clicking on the SUPPORT tab. Visit the Gift

Shop to follow a link to our store. You’ll be glad you did!

Capital improvements are on the horizon and you can help make a difference. Without a new roof on the 1928 building, the beauty of our theatre will be lost. The future of this facility -- Marion’s home to performing arts events and activities and our gathering place for all of our special memory-making moments -- is at risk. Watch for more details.

If you’ve been a faithful supporter of the Palace through ticket buying, membership, sponsorship, or some other means and would like to continue your support into the

future, a gift to the Marion Palace Theatre Perpetual Care Fund is a gift that keeps on giving. As an endowment, this fund allows for each donation to have a much

greater impact over a longer period of time. In addition to a cash gift to the Palace Perpetual Care fund, donors may make contributions of stock, property, or bequests through estate planning. For further information, please consult with your attorney

or contact the Marion Community Foundation, at 504 S State Street, Marion. You may also reach the Foundation by calling (740) 387-9704.

BUILDING A PALACE IN MARION, OHIO (1928)Construction of the Marion Palace Theatre began January 1928. The entertainment venue, designed by John Eberson, was complete in just eight short months. The owners opened its remarkable wooden doors to an anxious crowd of over 3200 on August 30, 1928. These patrons became the first to experience the lavish interior and a stage filled with exciting entertainment. Not only was the program captivating, but the building was show-stopping, too. The Spanish design did not disappoint those first theatre-goers. Nor does the atmospheric concept leave modern day visitors wanting. The lobby prepares guests for transport to another place and another time. Entrance into the auditorium reveals the makings of a Spanish courtyard complete with muted stucco walls, crawling vines, and a midnight blue sky with birds in flight, twinkling stars, and clouds afloat overhead. Statues adorn the Palace walls and crests outline the grand proscenium stage.

SAVING THE PALACE - THE PALACE GUARD (1976)After several decades of changing ownership, the Palace was in need of a great deal of work, if it was to remain the masterpiece Eberson intended and Marion residents had come to enjoy. In the mid seventies, the owner was looking to sell what had become a movie theatre in need of repair. The Marion

Concert Series shared the space and was more than a little interested in seeing the Palace retain its intended uses. Spear-headed by John C. Keggan, the Palace Guard was born. This group of seven Marion businessmen pulled out their wallets and rolled up their sleeves. They rallied the Marion community and invoked the support of area industries. In 1976, the Palace was “re-born” in all its splendor. At that time, the Palace Cultural Arts Association became the Theatre’s operating organization.

CURRENT OPERATIONS (2019)Today, only 16 Eberson-built atmospheric theatres remain from the hundreds originally constructed. The others have experienced the blow of a wrecking ball or been transformed into multiplexes or storage facilities. To stay current with public demands, the Palace continues to improve and upgrade the facility and the programming. Within the past five years alone, the Palace has upgraded from a 35mm film platter system to a Digital Cinema Projection system, made website improvements and online ticket buying user friendly, paved the north parking lot, opened an online apparel store (palacetheatre.itemorder.com), launched Palace Academy of the Arts, restored the building façade and installed a digital marquee just to name a few. With these changes, the theatre has experienced growth in memberships, ticket sales, and social media presence. We’re busy doing what we can to improve our facilities while providing plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy them. Great programming is always on the horizon so stay tuned to the website, read your Applause and check in on social media channels - Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or Twitter.

linking the arts and educationThe School Matinee Series and the Palace Academy of the Arts are educational programs that serve the PCAA mission statement to foster appreciation, education and participation in the arts, while preserving and promoting the historic Marion Palace Theatre.

SCHOOL MATINEE SERIESThe arts are a powerful tool for educators and a powerful experience for students. By linking the arts and education, the Marion Palace Theatre’s School Matinee Series exposes students to live performances that support curriculum content. The 2019-20 School Matinee Series underscores the importance of literacy, science, social studies, values and more. These concepts are presented in fun, musical productions performed by professional touring troupes that are scheduled for Oct 14 (“My Mouth is a Volcano” - PreK-4), Jan 16 (“The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System” - grades K-5), and Feb 24 (“Rosie Revere, Engineer & Friends” – grades K-4). Thank you to our 2019-2020 School Matinee Sponsors: Honda, Marion Public Library, and Ohio Arts Council.

PALACE ACADEMY OF THE ARTSFrom theatre classes to Broadway Dancercize & beyond, you can discover your hidden potential or develop your talent at the Palace Academy of the Arts. The Palace was built in ___________ by renowned theatre architect __________ _______________. The Palace is an ________________ theater, giving the feeling of being outdoors under the open sky. Marion’s Palace is a ________________ design. The architect included birds suspended from the ceiling, floating clouds and twinkling stars for realism. His signature piece, a stuffed ________________, is hanging in the southern most portion of the alcove along the west wall of the theatre. The theatre has 1430 ________________ and features a cantilevered balcony, offering “every seat the _______________ view.” The Palace was first built as a ____________________________ movie house. When the Depression hit, the theatre became strictly a ___________________ palace, first featuring silent films accompanied by the pipe organ (a Page at the time) and later “talkies.” The Palace is now home to the mighty _____________________ pipe organ. A special feature among historic theaters, today the Wurly rises from the orchestra pit for use during shows and tours. The Palace changed hands

a number of times and in 1975, the owner was looking to sell. A group of seven men headed by John Keggan, later known as the Palace ___________________, rallied the community and raised the funds needed to purchase and restore the failing theatre. Of the more than 100 constructed, there are only ______________ Eberson atmospheric theatres that remain operational. The Palace “re-opened” in July 1976 as a 501 c 3, the Palace ____________________ Arts Association. Currently, our programming includes touring artists, Palace produced events, art classes and camps, and ________________-_________ movies. The Palace is governed by the Board of Directors, which is comprised of 17 members elected by the PCAA ___________________ at the annual meeting. A __________ member staff operates the theatre on a daily basis and is assisted by a large __________________ organization at live events and movies. In 2008, the PCAA opened the newly constructed __________ ________________, a multi-purpose facility for meetings, classes, receptions, and small stage productions. Patrons may purchase tickets in the box office, online at www._______________________________ or by calling 740/383-2101. Regular __________ __________________ hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from ________ to 5pm. The box office opens one __________ before live events and 45 minutes before films.
