Yahoo! Started from Stanford University.

Founded in January 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo, who were Electrical Engineering graduate students - created a website named "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web“

In April 1994, Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web was renamed "Yahoo!".

Marissa Mayer Marissa Ann Mayer (born May 30, 1975) is an American business executive and computer

scientist.

Graduate of Stanford, and earlier a long-time executive, leader, and key spokesperson for Google.

On July 16, 2012, Mayer was appointed President and CEO of Yahoo!

To simplify the bureaucratic process and "make the culture the best version of itself", Mayer launched a new online program called PB&J (Process, Bureaucracy & Jams).

Changes Brought In She replaced some senior executives with new people whom she perceived to be more growth

oriented.

She appointed Ken Goldman as the new CFO of Yahoo and Kathy Savitt as the new CMO (Chief Marketing Officer)

Shared email list called "dev random" to establish connections with Yahoo's programmers; engaging in regular email discussions with software engineers who did not report to her.

Similar to Google's "TGIF" meetings- instituted "FYI" meetings every Friday at Yahoo HQ - employees could ask her questions & announcements of new hires were made.

Marissa’s Business Strategies1) Mobile First: mobile user base grew by 15% to 380 million monthly members in last

quarter.

2) Inject new talent: the company hired 1,000 new engineers in the same year and at least 50 Ph.D.s.

3) Thirst for Talent: Yahoo has bought an incredible 16 startups after 3 months of Marissa’s captainship.

4) Focus on key growth areas. All of Yahoo's acquisitions under Mayer falls into one of four buckets:

i. core business (content, apps and search), ii. social, iii. gaming, and iv. video (chat and conference calling).
