Itinerary Specially Prepared forMARIST COLLEGE ASHGROVE

WELCOMEIt is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome the Marist CollegeAshgrove rugby touring group to New Zealand. It is the game of rugby that has broughtus together and Total Rugby will ensure that you will experience the very best of NewZealands rugby culture. Welcome, Haere Mai, and enjoy your stay.

INTRODUCTORY NOTESWeather: April is autumn weather, which means it can be very changeable. Temperaturescan fluctuate wildly, from high 20s / low 30s to almost single figures. However, theaverage should be about 16 degrees Celsius.

Grounds: Grounds will be in good condition without the winter rains. If weather is warmthey could be very hard. Multi-studded boots should be adequate for backs (noguarantee), but are unlikely to provide adequate traction for tight forwards. Mediumlength studs recommended

Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is commonpractice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This is meantas a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish. Generally, theteam facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and front up. This is seen asthe most respectful. Three cheers are performed at the end of the match and playersshake hands with the opposition. Some clubs will perform a haka but it is less commonthan with school teams. It pays to ask before the game starts whether there will be a hakaperformed.

Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand. The refwill inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.

Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in NewZealand age group rugby.

After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after matchfunction for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain. The aftermatch is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches are made by the MCand respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form of a plaque/pendant, club orschool ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/badges, beanies or something else thathas been prepared. Food is then served.

First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial first aid isgenerally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergency services areavailable for more serious injuries. The emergency number in New Zealand is 111. Thereare after-hours medical services available in all main centres. ACC (Accident CompensationCommission) covers most of the cost if it is an accident - there will be surcharge. TotalRugby will assist with coordinating medical services including physiotherapy. It is expectedthat tour groups will have their own travel insurance to cover medical expenses. Operatorsof tourist services have their own policies regarding health and safety and issues arisingshould be managed directly with them. Ice should be part of your first aid kit.

Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations and

supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for storing iceat matches.

Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make an earlyrequest for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source a range of gear.

    Reuben Thorne

The 2nd most capped Crusader, Reuben Thorne has also playedthe most games by any player for one New Zealand franchise -surpassing the previous record of 127 held by Highlander AntonOliver, during the 2008 semi-final. Such is his longevity, Thornemissed just five matches in 10 years prior to being sidelined forthe first six games during the All Blacks conditioning window in2007. Thorne led the Crusaders to an unbeaten season in 2002,and captained the side for three seasons before handing overthe captaincy reins to Richard McCaw in 2005. The long serving

forward has now attended three World Cups, leading the AllBlacks when finishing third in 2003. He also led his country toconsecutive Tri-Nations titles in 2002 and 2003, as well as winning the Bledisloe Cupfor the first time in five years in 2003. New Zealand has won 20 of the 23 Tests ithas played under Thornes charge, with the veteran Crusader returning to thecaptaincy against Canada in 2007. Thorne became the 30th All Black, and the 17thforward, to appear for his country in 50 Tests, when he featured against Romania atthe World Cup. In Super rugby, Thorne boasts the unrivalled record of havingappeared in nine finals, finishing on the winning side seven times. He is the onlyCrusader to have featured on the playing staff of every title-winning side from thefranchise.

Reuben was a rarity among All Blacks, especially captains, in that he never made aninternational appearance at any age-group level. He earned his first All Black cap in1999, playing a single test against the Springboks before the 1999 Rugby UnionWorld Cup. Taking over as captain from an injured Anton Oliver, he led the All Blacksthroughout 2002 and 2003, apart from a brief tour of the UK and France inNovember 2002 which he missed due to a chronic ankle problem, causing formercaptain Taine Randell to be briefly recalled to the skipper's role.

Reuben was called into the Crusaders squad following numerous injuries for matchesin South Africa in the 2011 Super 15. Thorne made his return on the bench againstthe Cheetahs.

He has recently been involved in coaching High School Old Boys Club Premier side
