FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALChampagnat Day - Friday 7 June 2019Marcellin Champagnat, significant figure within the Church and founder of the Marist Brothers was born in France in 1789. Throughout his life, he was taken aback by the poverty and lack of education he encountered throughout France. Motivated by his reaction to the unfairness he perceived, in 1817 he took action and created the Marist Brothers. This group was dedicated to the religious and secular education of those of his fellow countrymen who were deprived of the opportunities available to others of higher class and better means. In Marcellin’s words “We aim at something better: we want to educate them, to instruct them in their duty, to teach them to practice it, to give them a Christian spirit and attitudes and to form them to religious habits and the virtues possessed by a good Christian and a good citizen.” More than 200 years later, Marist Catholic College Penshurst, a school founded by the Marist Brothers, celebrates his life at its annual Champagnat Day.

Our celebration of Champagnat Day will commence with a special Mass. At our Eucharistic celebration staff and students who have displayed the qualities and virtues of St Marcellin Champagnat will be recognised. The Mass will be celebrated outdoors in the Champagnat Village playground, and will commence at 10.00am. All parents, grandparents and carers are most welcome to attend.

Following Mass, staff and students will participate in a range of fun games and activities that include mega-slides, sumo wrestling, silent disco, face painting, karaoke, inflatables, air hockey games and much more. There will also be lots of fun food available for purchase on the day - slurpees, cakes, popcorn, gelato and fairy floss - for a small cost.

Some important details about the day• This is a compulsory school day for students. • Students will be required to be at school at normal time and will be dismissed at approximately 2.15pm.• Students are encouraged to wear French themed mufti clothing in the colours of red, blue and white as a way of

getting involved in the spirit of the Champagnat Day celebrations. Students are permitted to wear their mufti attire to and from school.

• Each student will be asked to contribute $5 as a donation towards supporting educational opportunities for young people on the margins in the Asia and Pacific Island regions.

I am looking forward to a vibrant community day and thank you in advance for your support.

Feast of Mary Help of Christians

Tomorrow we celebrate the feast day of Mary Help of Christians.

This feast day is an opportunity for all Australians to thank God for his blessings and to remind us that we are called to work against social trends that marginalise sections of our community.

We must remember that Mary is always there to help us on our faith journey. Mary loves us all with a mother’s heart and she is always ready to listen. We can pray to Mary and seek her guidance, as she is our spiritual mother.

Mary is a picture of love, compassion, hope and faith. Her sacrifices were great and illustrate for us the selflessness that motherhood generates.

Let’s turn to our Heavenly Mother tomorrow and ask her to draw us closer to her Son.

Mrs Connie Frino - Assistant Principal

YEAR 12 RETREATDuring Week 2 all of Year 12 embarked on their retreat to the spiritual home of the Marists in Australia – The Hermitage. Nestled in the pastoral lands of Mittagong the lands were originally selected by the Marist Brothers to provide a sanctuary outside the bustle of Sydney to train future Brothers of the order. The lands of the southern highlands were also selected due to their resemblance to pastoral lands of southern France where St Marcellin Champagnat founded his order of Brothers and did his pastoral work amongst the rural poor of France. It was in this wonderful setting that Year 12 enjoyed a period of respite, personal growth and spiritual reflection.

The retreat was broken into two groups, each enjoying two and half days down at Mittagong. The experience offered the young men of Year 12 to engage with their faith in a different fashion and challenged them to look at their own lives and reflect upon what was really important in their own life. The theme of the retreat was ‘Be the light’ based upon the wonderful scriptural passage from Matthew’s Gospel (Matt 5: 16-16). The students of Year 12, and the staff, reflected upon and discussed their talents and strengths and how they might offer these gifts to their peers, their College community and importantly their families back home.

The young men also enjoyed some free time with their peers in an environment free from the pressures of HSC school life. It was wonderful to see the good natured fun and enjoyment of the group around a game of pool or table tennis and also enjoying the outdoors with many long walks through the pastoral lands of the hermitage. The shared meals and time spent in the dorms were also valuable bonding time for a grade quickly approaching the end of their schooling career. Personally, I would like to thank all the staff for their willingness to share in this experience and to be so generous in their giving of time and effort. A special thanks to Ms Kalifa, Brother Tony and Father Adam who along with myself were on retreat with both groups for the whole week which was a tremendous effort. Finally, a special thank you to all the young men of Year 12 for the way they conducted themselves and participated on retreat.

Mr Jon Cullerton – Year 12 Leader of WellbeingStudent Reflection The Year 12 retreat at the picturesque Hermitage in Mittagong served as a good chance to take a step back from all the outside distractions and just reflect. I know for me personally, it was a very relaxing experience amongst the nature walks, quiet reflection, meditation and small group activities. Free time on the retreat was also a good chance to hang out with mates and either play a “friendly” game of either pool, table tennis or basketball, go for a stroll across the many acres of farmland or even just to sit down somewhere and enjoy the serenity. A big thank you must go to Ms Kalifa and Mr Cullerton for their organisation of the retreat, to Brother Tony for making the effort to come down as well as Father Adam and all the teachers who took time out from their families to come.

YEAR 11 LEGAL STUDIES On Tuesday 14th May, the Year 11 Legal Studies class visited the Downing Centre in Liverpool St, Sydney. This was a valuable opportunity for students to experience what they had learnt about the operation of the adversary system of trial in practice, such as the role of various legal personnel, juries and the use of evidence. They were able to sit in on a variety of court cases involving matters such as traffic offences, drug offences, assault, tax evasion and embezzlement.

The behaviour of the students and their personal presentation was outstanding and a credit to the College.

Miss Lydia Curis - Legal Studies Teacher

Students in Year 7 were very excited to test their instrumental skills further this week. This was the first time that students joined in larger ensembles with different instruments to create a large concert band. The students have progressed so much since the beginning of the year when many of them didn’t know how to hold their instrument!

Congratulations to those who have been practicing, and we look forward to more students joining the College Concert Band in the future.

YEAR 11 PHYSICS EXCURSIONAt the end of Term 1, the Year 11 Physics class visited Luna Park to assess our knowledge of the topics of Kinematics and Dynamics. We analysed the various forces involved in several of the rides at the park and had plenty of physics fun on rides like the Hair Raiser and the Wild Mouse. We used a range of data collection apps on our phone to collect a variety of data including velocity, acceleration and g-force. After a day of testing (along with an enjoyable time) we then used the results we gathered in our first assessment task which was to write a scientific report about the physics involved in the operation of selected rides.

YEAR 9 VISUAL ARTS This week Monday 20 May, Year 9 Visual Arts classes ventured off-site to explore artworks to inspire them in their new unit of work, East v West. The excursion included a visit to the Art Gallery of NSW, where students investigated the artworks of Australian and European artists located in the permanent collection of the gallery. They were inspired by landscapes, portraits, and still life works and explored how the culture of particular countries, impact on the style of work and subject matter in which they represent. Following this exhibit, students enjoyed a relaxing lunch at Darling Harbour Park. We then ventured into the Chinese Friendship Gardens at Darling Harbour, where students were fascinated by the Eastern world hidden in the heart of the city of Sydney. A drawing workshop took place within the gardens. Students explored the cultural influence from this Eastern culture through drawing the surroundings of the garden with a number of materials such as charcoal, graphite, watercolour and pen.

Year 9 will take this experience and apply these findings to their own art-making practice during class in the following weeks, where they will create a ceramic vessel showing a combination of Eastern and Western cultural influence. It was an enjoyable day had by all. Teachers who attended, Mr Brustolin and Mrs Nelson were impressed by the interest of the students and their mature attitude to this experience.

Students in this group showed a great love for learning on the day and it is exciting to see their skills and interest in Creative Arts are consistently developing.

Mrs Lea-Kathryn Nelson - Visual Arts Teacher

Today we went on our art excursion and visited the art gallery and the Chinese gardens. We visited the art gallery first, where we looked at European and Australian artworks. We looked at the subject matter, structural frame and cultural frame of both the European and Australian paintings. We saw many artworks that we had looked at in class and sketched examples of European and Australian artworks into our books. As the second part of our excursion, we visited the Chinese Gardens in Darling Harbour. We explored the various architectural designs and natural landscapes throughout the Gardens and explored the history of Chinese culture and tradition. In our artbooks that we had brought with us, we drew these aspects of the Chinese Gardens using different art materials as inspiration for this term’s assessment, East v West.

ARCHBISHOPS LUNCH

On Tuesday 21 May, we were invited to attend a lunch with Archbishop Anthony Fisher and senior leaders from local Catholic High Schools. This event allowed us to converse with other students about issues impacting our modern day society and religion, as well as the opportunity to have the Archbishop answer our questions about faith and the Church.
