Principal’s Message

Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of Marcellin,

Over the past 3 weeks and next week our SACE Stage 1 students have been engaged in work placement on a two week rotation basis. Crew A spent weeks 4 and 6 on work placement while Crew B were at school undertaking their SACE studies. This reversed in weeks 5 and 7 when Crew B is on work placement and Crew A are at College.

Work placement is a good reminder to students about presenting themselves well in terms of employability skills namely attitude, disposition, preparedness, punctuality, initiative and maturity to name a few. It is also about being outstanding ambassadors for the College and our education and training model. The opportunity to engage with employers through work placement enables Marcellin students to develop a better understanding of the world of work, relate their classroom/workshop learning to the real world and gain practical, on-the-job training that complements theoretical learning and contributes to the attainment of a recognised qualification. The ability to interact with employers as part of their senior secondary studies and training gives Marcellin students insight into the labour market and allows them to develop networks relevant to future employment prospects. Research has shown that employers play a critical role in developing the skills and competencies that help young people transition from school to work. We wish all our students the very best while on work placement and thank the employers who continue to support our students, College and education and training model. SACE Stage 1 are out on work placement again in Term 4. College Board Chairperson On 6 August the College Board farewelled our Chairperson,

Principal’s Message

Attention Year 11 students: Australian Business Week (ABW)

The ABW In-School is recognised as a Community Developed Program by the SACE Board as part of the South Australian Certificate of Education. SACE students participating in the program will receive 10 SACE credits at Stage 1 level. ABW for our College will start on Monday 21 September (Term 3—Week 10) and will run for the whole week. ABW is a compulsory part of the Year 11 program. ABW enterprise education programs help students of all ages to prepare for life beyond the classroom by providing the invaluable opportunity for them to ‘experience’ being an adult in the world of Australian business. ABW offers the opportunity for students to acquire the skills necessary to run their own company. In an exciting one week intensive program students will experience what it is like to run a multi million dollar company and make decisions which have real outcomes.

Advantages of participating Students experience a range of situations and can develop or improve skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. They can: Experience the responsibility of running a business Practice making important decisions and experience the

results Improve or develop leadership skills Learn to work effectively as a team member Develop time management skills Obtain advice and insights from business experts Gain a clearer picture of career preferences Improve oral and written presentation skills Best of all, ABW’s experiential enterprise education programs are so much fun that students are easily engaged. Learning becomes an enjoyable experience and lessons learned in the hands-on environment are likely to be remembered. To find out more, go to www.abw.org.au. Luke Harris, SACE Coordinator

2015 Parent Satisfaction Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians, We would like to invite you to participate in our annual Par-ent Satisfaction Survey. The results of the survey will help us receive feedback from you and also improve the experi-ence your child can have at Marcellin. Thank you very much for your time and contribution! The survey can be access by the link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/mtcparents2015

uniTEST at Flinders University

Flinders University is excited to announce the extension of uniTEST as an entry pathway to the university in 2016. The uniTEST is an aptitude test that has been designed to access the kinds of generic

reasoning and thinking skills that underpin studies at higher education and that are needed for students to be successful. uniTEST assesses this reasoning and thinking across the broad domains of mathematics, science, humanities and social sciences. Flinders will select students

based on both an applicant’s Year 12 results (60% weighting toward their Year 12 performance) and uniTEST performance (40%). It is important to note that no student will be disadvantaged by sitting uniTEST. For a full list of eligible courses please visit flinders.edu.au/unites/courses. For further details regarding uniTEST, please visit flinders.edu.au/unites or call 8201 5580.

Campus News As Term 3 draws to a close it is a valuable time for all of our students and families to reflect on the year so far. It is a good time for all of our students and their

families to discuss how the year has unfolded and start to plan for 2016. To assist with this process we will be conducting a Stage 2 Student Appraisal Interview with parent/caregiver(s) on Tuesday 8 September and Wednesday 16 September. All Stage 2 families should have received information in the mail with possible times and how to book in. For our Stage 1 students and their families there is a proposed Stage 1 Parent information evening to explain the transition process into Stage 2 in 2016 in terms of SACE, Training and possible Apprenticeships. Stage 1 Student Appraisal Interviews will be organised to take place early in Term 4, more information on this will be mailed out before the end of Term 3. Stage 2 students As mentioned in the last newsletter, our Stage 2 Yet to be Apprenticed students are in the process of completing their final SACE tasks and requirements for their Certificate II courses. Once these tasks/requirements are completed

the expectation is that all students keep communicating with their supervising Teacher-Mentor to help generate work placement/work opportunities or alternatively a tailored study program to help with their chosen career development plan for 2016. Stage 1 students Our Stage 1 students have started the phase of the year where they spend 50 percent of their time on workplacement and 50 percent of their time on campus at Marcellin. This phase is a real step towards transitioning into adult working life. I have already had some very good feedback from Stage 1 Crew A and Crew B’s first week block of placement which is great. If you are able to offer any trade-based work placement or know of anyone who can, please contact your son/daughter(s) Teacher-Mentor and they will follow up from there. All Stage 1 students will be completing a program called Australian Business Week in the final week of the term. This program introduces concepts required for successfully running a business in a competitive environment. We have guest speakers form various sectors of industry booked to speak to our students during the week and I thank Luke Harris and Gianni Petrucci for their hard work in setting up the program for the week. Kind Regards, Pete Chambers, Campus Director

We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 27 September. This year’s Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘For Those Who’ve Come Across the Seas: Justice for refugees and asylum seekers’.

The statement addresses the divisive national debate over asylum seekers, especially those who arrive by boat. It re-minds all Australians of the need to welcome and comfort those who have fled here from terror and danger, and to live out the example of Jesus, who never turned his back on those who were lost or suffering.

For further details about Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au or call (02) 8306 3499.

Daniel Matheson with his work

From the College Chaplain

Hi everyone, As I mentioned in the last news-letter, I have placed some pam-phlets in the Resource Centre from Beyond Blue, CanTeen and NcPic. Some students were discussing them and noted that the infor-mation mostly relates to Cannabis. One made the comment “what, are

we all Cannabis addicts?!”. The answer to this is obviously ‘No.’ However I will say, that the reason there is so much information available on Canna-bis is that this is usually where young people start their rela-tionship with drugs. Cannabis use often leads to other nar-cotics. I would also take this opportunity to clarify that a person does not need to be an addict to be a drug user, nor does a person need to be an addict for their drug use to be harm-ful. Using on every occasion is harmful whether it is a once-off, habitual or addiction. It is important that you put some thought into your beliefs about drug and alcohol use. This is so much more than ‘something fun to pass the time’ or ‘I’ll give it a go ‘cos my mate is’. These seemingly irrelevant decisions are often

more significant than we might realise, because each small decision moves us towards forming habits which create de-pendence and often lifelong addiction. The same is true when we are trying to form good habits! In my work as a drug and alcohol counsellor, every addict I met wished they’d viewed their use as more serious in their younger days. Most were dependent on Alcohol, Meth and/or Can-nabis and at age 30, 40 or 50, looking back could see where it all started around age 16 – 17. “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, and your values become your destiny.” Mahatma Gandhi If anyone would like to discuss anything relating to alcohol, drugs or any other topic, I am more than happy to chat sometime. I am in school Mondays 8.30 – 2.30 and Fridays 9 – 3.30 and can be contacted by email or via your Teacher-Mentor. Kind regards, Roisin McCorry College Chaplain ph. 8186 9706 e: [email protected]

Recently in a special edition of the Advertiser—CareerOne for National Skills Week Marcellin Technical College was featured as a place to get a head start. At Marcellin “the teaching and learning programs have been designed to reflect and emulate the trade/vocational pathway and work environment.” “The College’s model of education and training, industry-standard equipment such as CNC machines (computer numerical control machines) and workshops are highly conductive in supporting students in their chosen pathway and successful transition to their post-school options.” Further information is on www.mtc.sa.edu.au or call
