  • Petrosino Square

Instructor: Ethan KathStudio Program:1. Investigate Petrosino Square in

in downtown Manhattan 2. Design a structure and park space allowing for circulation, cafe, and gallery

spaces to bring life back to the square.

The Challenge: 1) To analyze Petrosino Square at the intersection of Lafayette and Spring street in downtown Manhattan. Analyze the SHGHVWULDQFLUFXODWLRQDQGKRZLWLQWHUDFWVZLWKWKHYHKLFXODUWUDIF'HVLJQDVSDFH WKDW LQWHJUDWHVYHKLFXODU WUDIFSHGHVWULDQZDONLQJ WUDIFVXEZD\DFFHVVDQGSDUNVSDFHV7KHVSDFHVKRXOGDOORZXQLQKLELWHGRZRISHGHV-WULDQFURVVLQJDQGVXEZD\DFFHVVWUDIF$VWUXFWXUHZDVWREHEXLOWZKLFKincluded a gallery space, a congregation space, a new stand, a cafe space, RIFH VSDFHV DQG DPH]]DQLQH OHYHO SURYLGLQJ FLUFXODWLRQ WR WKH VXEZD\

Design Solution: The site chosen was a run down park / monument for a New York Police Detective. The park was closed off, and the circulation pattern suffered due to lack of curb space along the triangular park pad. 0\UVWGHVLJQZDV WR OLIW WKHPRQXPHQWVWUXFWXUHXSRII WKHJURXQGDQGDOORZ IUHH RZLQJ SHGHVWULDQ WUDIF DFURVV WKH VLWH :LWKLQ WKH IRRW SULQWof the site I created park space, and pedestrian congregation space. The structure was designed as liquid crystal glass, with solar generation lamination. By day the glass would collect sunlight and covert it to store-able power, by night the generators would illuminate the liquid glass which will provide and amber glow throughout the square. The glass will shine with low amounts of light reanimating the square from its present unused state.

New York city is well known for its park systems and its pocket parks. Any structure to be built within a park must be carefully designed to have the least over-all impact to the existing surrounding. The Studio was tasked with investigating the central park wild life and site surroundings and design a park pavilion within the renowned Central Park in the heart of New York City. The site is located on the west edge of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir along the joggers path at W89th street. The pavilion was required to house educational space, gathering space with a gallery, a boat launch, and an observation deck which would integrate bird observation spaces.

My pavilion design was about the experience of light through the progression of the site. The structure is a steel frame structure supporting outer glass shells that rose out of the water body shapes of central park. As you progress through the pavilion site you proceed through the light glass structures into varying interior program spaces, then into louvered circulation spaces.

The dynamic steel structure that supports the glass roofs creates varied shading effects throughout the day. There is three layers of louvered VKDGLQJHIIHFWVUVWWKHORXYHUHGFLUFXODWLRQVHFRQGWKHFULVVFURVVVWHHOstructures supporting the roofs, and third two arching louvered roof plates that cover the whole site. The roof plates redirect the east and west light over the site, creating varied sun and shading effects through the day.

Design Studio Challenge:The studios were assigned varying fashion design-ers. Using the assigned designers, the studios were required to investigate their fashion sense, their creations, their artwork, and any other pertinent creations and lifestyle choices in order to get a sense of who they are. With this research the studios then began designing a new design headquarters.

The Headquarters was to incorporate public space, a fashion studio, a production studio, a retail store, DGPLQLVWUDWLRQRIFHVDUXQZD\SULYDWHORXQJHVDQGmeeting areas.

The site is located on West 14th street, in New York City, NY in the Historic Meat Packing District. It sits directly east of the newly famous Highline park, and the infamous Standard Hotel, NY.

The design for the headquarters faced the challenge of adapting to the historic location while mixing modern and environmentally friendly materials and techniques
