DAILY OPINION

I HAVE never seen as manyhigh-powered, expensive cars atMorgan Park Raceway as I didyesterday.

I was impressed to see all theteams dressed in uniforms and areasonable crowd watching theaction.

The first point of call was thegate where the Warwick ApexClub was on duty with fellow clubmembers from Ipswich andSandgate.

Welcomed by volunteer work-ers, I then saw some racing andspoke to some of the drivers andofficials.

Some of the classes hadone-hour races so this wasn’tjust a Sunday morning drive.

From Warwick District SportingCar Club members Dan O’Maraand Noel Henderson to NewZealand driver Inky Tulloch andAdelaide CAMS official LuigiDeluca, everyone was ravingabout the new 3km circuit.

While we often talk about thehorse power aspect of life inWarwick, no one can under-estimate the economic benefit ofany sport. One such sport is golf.

At the weekend, 24 membersof the Jimboomba Social GolfClub were also in town for ninerounds on Sunday and 18 yester-day, bringing money into thetown.

There’s plenty of timeto acquire new skills,

make somemistakes andlearn from them to getwhere youwant to be.

nal question is not simply a soleoccupation.I think the answer to that ques-tion should include words likehappy, challenged, inspired, pro-ductive, rewarded and finallysuccessful. If you find yourselfusing any of the earlier words, Ithink you can quite easily crossoff the word successful. So, I imparted this small piece

of non-expert sisterly advice onthe one freaking out on the otherend of the phone – the best way towork out what you should be

AFTER spending 53 minutestalking to a very stressedlittle sister the other night,

I started to wonder why studentsare put under so much unneces-sary pressure.“I don’t know what I want to do

– I’m running out of time!” shestressed. My 15-year-old sibling was

talking about her future career. The old question “What do youwant to be when you grow up?”had finally caught up with herand she felt she needed to answerit ASAP.The thing I tried to make herrealise was that even if she pickssomething she wants to do, she’llprobably change her mind four orfive times before she even grad-uates from high school. That was, after all, what hap-

pened with me.I have “wanted to be” every-

thing including a physiotherapist, teacher, architect, clown (OK, thatwas when I was six) and more bythe time I started my final year ofhigh school.I read somewhere that the

average person has at least threecareer changes in their adultlives. Three. So who knows? Maybe there’s

hope for me in the circus, yet. When I told her this, little sis

simply said, “But I don’t evenknow what number one is yet,how am I going to get to three?”.I think the answer to the origi-

doing for the rest (or at least achapter of) your life is to workout what you’re good at and thenask yourself what jobs would suityour talents.

OpportunityaboundsOur generation is definitely oneof instability.I can’t think of a single friendfrom school who is doing exactlywhat they wanted to do at Year 12graduation when we spoke aboutwhere we’d be in 10 years – andthat’s OK.Some left uni midway through, some decided to travel and somedecided to work at a job theydidn’t necessarily like to savesome dough.Luckily, as members of Gener-

ation Y we have the luxury totake our time to work out the rest

of our lives. We have so many opportunitiesopen to us which weren’t avail-able to our older counterparts. For one thing, young womenare no longer limited to a handfulof careers including nursing, teaching and secretarial work.We can do pretty much anyth-ing we want.Which is both empowering and

intimidating, thinking of thepossibilities. So, I told her, give a few thingsa go and if you don’t like it or itdoesn’t work out, try somethingdifferent. There’s plenty of time to ac-

quire new skills, make somemistakes and learn from them toget where you want to be.And if you still don’t knowwhere that is, who cares?Call me a naive Gen Yer, but Ireckon everyone will eventually.

AFTER another outstandingdisplay of defensive football, theRedbacks have just missed out ona finals berth.Finishing equal third on winsand losses, an inferior percentagehas placed them in fifth and un-fortunately in mothballs.A scoreline of 31.22 (208) to onesolitary point was Lockyer Val-ley’s lowest ebb of the season. There was absolutely no answ-er to the Redbacks midfield set-up where Kurt Millard, BrendanIles and Clinton McErvale wenton a ball-gathering spree off AlexCutmore’s ruck play.Whenever Lockyer did force

the ball forward into their ownscoring zone, Tony Chandler,Andrew Bardsley and Steve Mar-tin stepped up and pushed theReddies straight back into attack.Assistant coach Jason Wrightmade a personal statement kick-

ing 13 goals and assisting in manyothers.Wright led for the ball perfectlyand had bullet-like passes fromIles and the Millard brothers,Kurt and Kris, hitting him on thechest. On the rare occasions the ballwent astray, Vaughn Skelly andMark Mills crumbed the packsand set up scoring plays.Although an all-team effort tomake the September games didn’tquite fall into place, the guys thathave put it together this year andcan stand proud.Brendan Iles’ captaincy wasflawless and the attitude of theentire squad that stayed for thehard yards make it easy to boastthat you are a Redbacks suppor-ter.Goal scorers: J Wright 13, Bren-

together, Beggs was in the old carsaloon section and after twoevents was in second place. His best time in the first tworaces at the Shannons Nationalswas one minute, 30.9575 secondsfor the new 3km circuit. After going well in the salooncar event at the weekend, Beggsis now aiming to graduate from a(CAMS) provisional to an openlicense so he can compete in thelead-up races to major events oncircuits such as Bathurst and theGold Coast. He does all his own work on thecar with sponsorship supportfrom his employer, David Cassels,of Graeme Collins Automotive, who helps with tyres, fuel and
