The Early Stages of a Spiritual Awakening

Rev. Dr. Gregory JonesSenior Pastor/Head of Staff

2

As people of faith, we seek a meaningful spiritual life.Such a life includes a personal connection with God, but italso includes much more. Jesus called us to be his handsand feet in the world, treating others fairly and withrespect. As the prophet Micah said, “What does the Lordrequire of us but to do justice, to love kindness and to walkhumbly with God.”

Expanding on our mission, Jesus said “Blessed are thePeacemakers for they shall be called children of God.” Heexpects us to do the difficult yet incredibly rewardingwork of reconciling broken relationships and working forpeace. This is a high calling indeed.

While Camilla and I were on sabbatical, the GeneralAssembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) met in Pittsburgh. Having just spent more than three weeks inLebanon, Jordan, and Israel/Palestine, we drove to Pittsburgh to observe the Assembly and to listen to thedeliberations on peacemaking in the Middle East.

The resolutions before the Assembly were similar to over-tures that have come before the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Canada, and the Episcopal Church:should our church divest its shares in three Americancompanies—Caterpillar, Motorola, and Hewlett-Packard—whose products are used for “non-peaceful pursuits” that aid the Israeli occupation of Palestinians. The committee dealing with this resolution heard twodays of testimony from people on both sides of this issue, including Jewish rabbis (some in favor and some against). The committee of 48 average Presbyterians voted 36 forand 11 against (with one abstention) divesting. (Note: thePresbyterian Church U.S.A. has already listed several hundred companies in which it does not invest; many aretobacco companies and those in the gaming industry). Thecommissioners to the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to boycott all products made in Israelisettlements. However, the vote for divestment lost by arazor-thin margin of 331 for, 333 against, and two absten-tions. Instead, they voted to invest “constructively” and

“positively” in both Palestine and Israel and engage people in activities that could promote peacemaking andimprove the lives of Palestinians living under occupation.

Working through Delaware Churches for Middle EastPeace, we are attempting to promote an exciting peace-making project in Israel/Palestine. In the spring of 2011, I,along with a handful of other Protestant clergy, met withseveral rabbis in our area. We wanted them to understandthat our work is both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian andmost definitely pro-peace. We believe that peace and security will continue to elude Israel if there is no justicefor Palestinians.

What emerged from our meeting was a commitment towork together on a peace project in Israel/Palestine thatwould connect Israeli and Palestinian youth. Soon welanded on a plan: to create a steel drum band composed ofan equal number of Israeli and Palestinian youth.

Harvey Price, a professor of percussion at University ofDelaware (and who plays the timpani for our Easter worship most years), has already had success creatingsteel drum bands in Israel composed of Ethiopian Jews, and he was immediately excited about our project. Fundedby the Westminster Peacemaking Committee, Harveywent to Israel earlier this summer and shored up an agree-ment with two schools that agreed to recruit the studentsand two instructors who will be in charge of the project. Our hope is that this project will grow over time, creatingseveral steel drum bands and laying a foundation of peacefor the youth, their families, and their communities.

Stay tuned. You’ll be hearing more about this peacemak-ing effort.

Blessings,

Fair Trade is a way of doing business that ultimately aims to keep small farmers an activepart of the world marketplace and to empower consumers to make purchases thatsupport their values. Fair Trade is a set of business practices voluntarily adoptedby the producers and buyers of agricultural commodities and handmade craftsthat are designed to advance many economic, social, and environmental goals, including the following:

Raising and stabilizing the incomes of small-scale farmers, farm•workers, and artisansMore equitably distributing the economic gains, opportunities,•and risks associated with the production and sale of these goodsIncreasing the organizational and commercial capacities of pro-•ducer groupsSupporting democratically owned and controlled producer organ-•izationsPromoting labor rights and the right of workers to organize•Promoting safe and sustainable farming methods and working condi-•tionsConnecting consumers and producers•Increasing consumer awareness and engagement with issues affecting producers•

The Fair Trade practices that advance these goals typically, but not always, include the following:

Direct trade relationships and long-term contracts between importers and producer groups•Sourcing from small-farmer or artisan co-operatives•Higher than conventional market prices, either through above-market premiums and/or price floors•The provision of affordable credit•Adherence to the policies of the International Labor Organization, especially those concerning child and forced•labor and the right to collective bargainingThe prohibition of the use of the more dangerous pesticides and herbicides•Substantial price premiums for the production of certified organic crops•External monitoring, auditing, and certification of these practices by independent third parties•

In the July/August issue of The Chimes, you readabout the new electronic sign we were planning toerect on the front lawn of the church (Pennsylvania

Avenue). A great deal of time and effort went into thisproject to ensure that we constructed a top-quality sign.We sought a structure that would fit the architecture ofour beautiful stone building and an electronic boardthat would use the most up-to-date technology.

Unfortunately, we hit a snag. Residential zoning hastight restrictions on the size of signs, and our PropertyCommittee decided to ask for a variance in the zoningguidelines that would allow us to construct our sign. However, when neighbors were informed that wewould ask for a variance to the zoning restrictions, resistance to our sign began to mount. We conductedtwo community meetings to share details of the signwith our neighbors and to listen to their concerns. Veryfew of our neighbors attended these meetings.

One of our neighbors circulated a petition opposing oursign, and one week prior to our hearing for a variance, there were 137 people opposing our sign. In addition, there were a number of letters and e-mails expressing

opposition to our sign. The main objections to our signwere its size, the electronic lighting, the potential that itcould be a traffic hazard, the possible precedent formore electronic signs, and that it would potentiallychange the character of the neighborhood.

Westminster has an excellent reputation in our commu-nity, and we value good relations with our neighbors. Aspecial meeting of the Session was held on September5th to determine whether we believed the positiveresults from putting up the sign would outweigh the illwill we would create with our neighbors. The Sessioncarefully discussed and reflected on the concerns thathad been expressed. In the end, the Session decided towithdraw the request for a variance and to ask the signcommittee to work on an alternative that would beacceptable to our neighbors. Because we would still liketo have new signage on Pennsylvania Avenue, it is ourhope that our neighbors will work with us on a designthat will meet our need to communicate with the public.

Updates will be provided to the congregation as wemove forward. Please contact Elder Karen Dietz at [email protected] if you have questions or concerns.

Current Scholarship Recipients and Alumni Visit Westminster

At our worshipservice on August19, for the first

time in the 15-year historyof our WPC ScholarshipProgram, we had the pleasure of welcoming and congratulat-ing two alumni, Layshawn Hemingway, a 2012 graduate ofthe University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Denise Commodore, a 2012 graduate of Eastern University, nowteaching at the UrbanPromise School. James Russell, theUrbanPromise StreetLeader Director, and two current WPCScholarship/UrbanPromise College Retention Fund recipients also attended that service and the ice cream socialthat followed: Dakota Croxton is a senior at Morgan StateUniversity, and Nichelle Holland is a sophomore at CoppinState University.

Eleanor Charles was instrumental in creating the first Urban Mission–funded Scholarship Program in 1997. The initial plan provided financial assistance for low-income students entering the first year of post-secondary educa-tion. Through the years, the Scholarship Program has evolved and now helps to ensure that students are able tocomplete their education. Westminster provides an annual $5,000 donation to the WPC Scholarship/UrbanPromiseCollege Retention Fund.

Although Eleanor retired in 2008 as head of the Scholarship Program, she continues to be supportive and was onhand to help welcome our guests. Since Eleanor's retirement, Nancy Doyle has served as the contact for our Scholarship Program. For more information, Nancy can be reached at 302-636-9061.

“Blessing of the Backpacks” Steps It Up!

On Sunday, August 19, Westminster celebrated the sixth annual “Blessing of the Backpacks” event. During worship, Anne Ledbetter blessed the backpacks ofour school-aged children as well as those we donated to students of EastSide

Charter and UrbanPromise elementary schools. We continued our celebration in Com-munity Hall with the ice cream social organized by our deacons. UrbanPromise Head of School Catherine Dolanand EastSide Charter Parent Liaison Anita Price movingly expressed their appreciation to those present.

Many thanks to all who participated in this amazing project. Through your abundant generosity, we were able toprovide 300 filled backpacks to students at these two schools—a 50% increase over prior years to help satisfy thisgrowing need. What a joy to make a difference in the life of a child who might otherwise not have had the toolsneeded to begin a successful school year! Special thanks to the Dietz, Kniel-Tolbert, Piercy, and Saathoff moms andchildren for an amazing job filling the backpacks and to everyone who contributed so generously.

Equipping students with the school supplies theyneed to participate effectively in class is an essen-tial aspect of caring for children and youth in our

community, yet even more important is the need formany of these children to have the continuing presenceof a caring adult in their lives.

Please join us on Sunday, October 14, at 10:TEN inClassroom 5 to hear UrbanPromise Head of SchoolCatherine Dolan share stories of these life-changingrelationships and the opportunities that exist for us togive just a little of our time to make a huge differencein a child’s life.
