MEMS MICROPHONES
High penetration rate in hearing aids
MEMS microphones are integrated in the newly developed hearing aids and
replace ECM technology
ECM are still mostly used in hearing aids. In 2014 the hearing aids represented $8.3B (including cochlear implants), a13M units market with an average of 2 microphones per system. Thus, it enables great market opportunities for MEMSmicrophone manufacturers.

MEMS MICROPHONES
Hearing aids: Opportunities
The market is growing very fast, but still
slower than the consumer market.
©2016 | www.yole.fr | Health Business Connect Conference 2016
• Cost pressure is less important than for consumer applications
• The technology is not different than for consumer
• MEMS penetration in this market is faster than expected
• MEMS enable new possibilities: more precision in directional hearing aids, speech
recognition and amplification…
24
MEMS MICROPHONES
Hearing aids: Challenges
This market is difficult to
access: very high quality is
required while volumes are still
low
©2016 | www.yole.fr | Health Business Connect Conference 2016
• Performance required by hearing aid manufacturers are higher than for consumer
applications
• The excellent dynamics of the consumer market makes the medical market appear static
and unrewarding
• Each hearing aid manufacturer has different requirements and wants a specific microphone
developed
• Low volumes lead to high ASP
• Medical devices take time to be approved

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
• Healthcare is changing with social evolution and new technologies
• bioMEMS are increasingly used: new components, new applications
• Significant challenges along with great opportunities on niche markets
• Shift towards consumer healthcare is going to change the game with much higher volumes…
• … But not yet!Too many barriers are still preventing consumer healthcare to explode
