Government of India has set up aggressive renewable energy(RE) capacity addition target of 175 GW by 2022.

India’s Renewable Energy Target

Most effective solutions for addressing these challenges are the use of energystorage technologies (ESS) on both the supply and demand side of thewholesale generationmarket.

India’s Existing Legal & Policy Framework Governing ESS

Govt. of India has released Net Metering Policy which gives consumer aprovision to install Rooftop PV at their premises. Most systems will involveinverters with batteries. So far, around 14 States have released net meteringpolicies.

Government of India has already set aggressive targets of 175 GW of renewableenergy with 100 GW coming from solar, 60 GW by wind, 10 GW by biomass and5 GW by small hydro. Integration of renewable energy will require energystorage technologies to achieveRenewable Energy Targets.

Ministry of Power has approved National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) whichhas set aggressive targets for Microgrids which will require energy storagetechnologies.

The Govt. of India has launched Nation Electric Mobility Mission (NEMM) inApril 2015 with a target of 6-7 million Electric Vehicles by 2022

Levelized Demand of ESS in Indian Market

Level1(OnlyBattery

Techn.)

• LowcostandefficientbatterytechnologiesareexpectedtoruleIndianmorecommercialization,enoughadoptionofbatterystorage..TotalgridconnectedstorageinIndiawillbe 8GWby2022.

Level2(V2Gtechn.)

•V2G (Vehicle to Grid) technologies will be maturing to offer storage solutions as large fleet of connectedEV’s (Electrical Vehicle’s) will operate in VPP (Virtual Power Plant) mode. Total grid connected storage inIndia will be 20 GW by 2022.

Level3(CAES&other techn)

• Partnership between India and other countries for smart grids brings out more low cost batteries withhigher performance parameters. Wind farms uses CAES (compresses air energy storage), solar paneluses molten salt batteries, telecom sector will also take a lead in replacing their diesel generators withhybrid solution. Total grid connected storage in India will be 25 GWby 2022.

Level4(Smartgridroadmap)

•As per India’s Smart Grid roadmap, micro grids will be implemented in 10,000 villages and 100 smartcities till 2027, batteries will play a major role in these deployment. Wind mills will be integrated withhydro pump storage systems to operate them. Total grid connected storage in India will be 40 GW by2022.

Current Projects targeting Indian Market

10-megawatt grid battery project announced between AES Energy Storage and Panasonic. Eco-friendly techno-park is setting up in Haryana, India by AES energy storage.

Power Grid invited bids for ESS demonstration projects for 500 kW/250 kWh (Li ion battery, SodiumNickel chloride/Alkaline/flow battery.

MNRE proposed to support demonstration projects for ESS to assess feasibility of ESS technologiesfor small scale and grid connected MW scale renewable energy applications.
