Introduction

What is our market? Our market is the Horror Film industry; this means I will need to focus my research on purely the horror genre.

Who are your consumers? The consumers for our product are going to be young adults and adults.

What will I need to know about the market?I will need to know is there a gap in the market for my product and how competitive the industry is. I will need to find out how many horror films are released every year and what is the most popular. I will need to find out what production companies are the best and which one will get my product most recognised. I will also need to find out what is the best time of year to release my product for it to be most successful.

The top 10 horror supernatural films box office to date

This table shows the top horror supernatural films. It was important for me to look into the

supernatural films as this is the sort of product I want to create. It shows that the most successful

film is ‘The Sixth Sense’ with a lifetime gross of $293,506,292. The most common film studio within

the top supernatural films is the Warner brothers however the top film’s studio is Buena Vista. The

Sixth Sense was a success as it used famous actors such as Bruce Willis; the film is about a child

physiologist who takes on a younger patient that sees dead people. Below I have taken a review

from the IMDB website which seemed common to all the other reviews I have read. He quotes it

that the film has a ‘long lasting impression’. The audience for the film is aimed at people above the

age of 15 due to the rating of the film. The audience of the film would like drama, mystery and

thriller.

A movie with a gentle but long-lasting impression.

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

The Sixth Sense enjoys being playful with our imagination. What your eyes see is not exactly what it

is. What your mind paints is not exactly what there is. In the world of The Sixth Sense logic is your

worst enemy.

There are obvious (and sometimes less obvious) hints right in front of you but you don't grasp them

because of your preconceptions and premises. I once read a novel called 'Somewhere carnal over 40

winks' which used similar techniques found in this movie, but in writing. I'm sure you will enjoy this

book as much as I did, if you like to be intellectually surprised.

If you haven't seen this movie, don't read reviews and don't talk to your friends who have already

seen it. The movie is very much susceptible to spoilers. It is suffice to say that the ending is just

shockingly delightful.

I don't consider this movie heavily philosophical or thought-provoking. Having said that, it is one of the

movies I love to watch again and again.

Box office for Horror Films in 2015

The box office shows that the most successful horror film in 2015 was ‘Insidious Chapter 3’. The distributor of the top film is also shown within the fourth place film ‘Sinister 2’. When looking at the different distributors this then shows me which ones are most successful to make my product succeed. I think that Insidious chapter 3 was successful

Market Share for each Genre 2015

The table shows that the top genre of film in 2015 was action. In comparison horror was placed sixth, this could mean that there is less competition in the horror genre as it isn’t as successful as other genres. The table shows me that only 20 horror films were released in 2015 so far, compared to documentary films where 110 films were released. The horror genre has a gap in the market as not that many films are released giving me more chance to make my product successful. The horror genre only has 2.98% of the market share meaning that this could mean that my product doesn’t get successful.

Market Share for each MPAA rating in 2015

This table shows that the top ratings for films are rated at parental guidance with age 13. My product is most likely to be rated at R as a restricted rating which is second within the table. It shows that 173 movies were shown that are R rated.
