Niko Niko’s is a perfect fit; the park has increased foot traffic to the Historic District on weekday lunchtimes and created never before seen traffic in the mornings – especially on weekends –and on weeknights – especially when events are planned in the park. Sales for our restaurant, located on the square, have increased since the park reopened and I think in addition to our food, service and reputation, this is just one more component that makes our business successful. I feel that the revitalization of the park has given a new point of reference in selling the downtown residential market. I use it daily as a landmark in talking with clients about the geography and proximity to the park and I use it in discussing activities and amenities that downtown has to offer. However the biggest impact it has had to me on selling downtown is that I can walk people to the park and let them experience the vibrant downtown residential life in person.

The redevelopment of Market Square Park is not only a neighborhood amenity but also a economic generator and recruiting tool. The blending of historic and contemporary was brilliantly conceived and implemented.

Market Square Park is a public park – it is accessible and vital and there’s something for everyone. All events are free to the public and through creative programming we outreach to a diversity of cultures, specifically through music.

The process of visioning, designing and building Market Square Park has been by the book – from stakeholder visioning meetings with PPS to ongoing meetings regarding operations and programming. We encourage all similar projects to follow in our footsteps.

We believe that through strategic partnerships, we can make a greater impact. From the beginning Market Square Park has been a collaborative process between the Downtown District and City of Houston entities but also with local foundations, arts groups, businesses and residents.

The goal was to create a neighborhood park that is a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. We wanted to protect and celebrate our history and culture while moving forward into the future. Park attendance, café sales and visitor feedback have all surpassed our expectations and projections.

Our challenge is to maintain and operate the park on the highest level as we move forward and to continue programming the park in a creative way.
