A Message from Dr. Lisa ScribnerMarketing Department Chair

Wow! I am blown away by all the excitement going on here at UNCW in the Marketing Department! You’ll hear about many of these endeavors in this Fall edition of our Marketing Messenger.

We have another new faculty member to introduce to you – Dr. Matt Lastner from LSU. He is teaching sales classes for us and will be coaching our first student sales team for the National Collegiate Sales Competition next spring. Our PSE students competed at a very high level at the National Competition and this summer was chosen as the Outstanding Community Service Event of the Year awarded by the Professional Fraternity Association! Their “Cookin’ For Kiddos” event held at Winter Park involved feeding children in need after Hurricane Florence. I’m so proud of our students for the wonderful way in which they gave of themselves and cared for our community. Congratulations to PSE students and their amazing faculty advisor, Dr. Mark Pelletier!

The Center for Sales Excellence & Customer Delight is brimming with activities: internal sales competitions sponsored by our sponsor companies Spring 2019 (nCino) and Fall 2019 (Rite-Hite), Sales Forums in the Spring 2019 (“Sales Enablement Software”) and in the Fall 2019 (“On-Boarding Best Practices & Trends”). We are delighted to be working with our sponsoring companies and creating opportunities for additional sponsors.

For our Marketing Strategy students, we have added a new student club, the American Marketing Association (AMA). Dr. Rika Spencer and Dr. Katee Zhang are co-advisors and are actively building the leadership team and members. Dr. Brian Kinard is actively recruiting students for the Prague Consultancy Project over Spring Break. Dr. James Hunt will be taking a group of students to Valencia, Spain this summer to study Marketing. We have a new Honors Group in Marketing in which our honors students meet weekly with each other and their faculty supervisors: Dr. Howe, Dr. Pelletier, Dr. Spencer and myself. Dr. Barnes is actively organizing speakers for Business Week, so if you’re interested, please contact him. Why Marketing?

What does it mean to be one of the top Marketing students to you?

“I feel very grateful to be at the top of my class. It took a lot of work to get to this point but I am grateful for all of my friends and support I have had getting to this point. Specifically I am grateful for my fellow PSE members who have helped to motivate and push me.

I chose marketing because I am interested in becoming an entrepreneur. I feel that marketing and sales are two of the most crucial activities of a business. Because of that, I chose to focus my efforts into marketing and professional sales. Looking back, I feel that I have chosen precisely the right degree.

My advice for other marketing students would be to go the extra mile. I firmly believe that you get out of school whatever you put into it. You can be the student that goes to class and leaves as soon as class is over. You will get your degree and you will probably do alright. On the contrary, you can stay a little later to make connections with professors and speakers, make deep connections with fellow students who push you, and get involved with groups of people who also want to succeed. I believe if you do the latter, your experience will be much more impactful.”

There is a lot to report since my last update regarding our Sales Center. The Marketing Department has added three new sponsors since last March: RITE-HITE, PAYCHEX and GARTNER. Our PSE students did incredibly well at the PSE National Sales Contest in April (Silver Chapter Award and several individual winners). However, we are in need of new sponsors to assist with display case purchases for the hardware PSE has brought home over the years. RITE-HITE was at the PSE Nationals in Jacksonville, FL and was so impressed with one of our students, Frauke Schiefner, they offered her a summer internship in Milwaukee.

Chancellor Sartarelli, Dean Burrs, our Marketing Advisory Group, PSE Officers, and our Department Faculty honored our six sponsors (Syneos Health, The Select Group, nCino, Rite-Hite, PAYCHEX and Gartner) at the Foundation Sponsors’ Reception on September 18th after our UNCW Career Fair (all-time record for firms attending and student participants). A plaque was commissioned to honor our first sponsors and will be placed outside of our Sales Lab (see more detail and pictures in our NEWS section).

Finally, on November 6th, our Sales Center will host our Fall Sales Center Forum. The spring 2019 forum focused on Sales Enablement software. This fall’s forum will focus on Sales Ethics in a Technology- Enabled Environment. The event will be held in our Computer Information Systems building in room 1008 (more details to follow).

We are happy to announce the start of an American Marketing Association UNCW chapter! While the AMA is a professional organization for marketing professionals who work, teach, and study in the field, the hope is that all students will also have something to gain from being a member. The goal of the organization is to be the most relevant force and voice shaping marketing around the world. Some of the benefits from joining include: increasing the understanding of the marketing profession, beginning career development, and gaining valuable and relevant skills. The organization plans on participating in marketing competitions, such as the AMA Triangle’s Marketing Jam, as well as attending marketing conferences, such as the AMA International Collegiate Conference. This could be a great opportunity to help build a club and network with marketing professionals, on top of getting a perspective on what marketing could do for business students.

If you are interested in more information on the AMA or becoming involved, please contact Dr. Fredrika Spencer. [email protected]
