SHOE INDUSTRY

• When my great grandmother was born, Marlborough was known for it’s shoe manufacturing. • Shoe companies filled Marlborough’s streets for

many years

CHANGES ON MAIN STREET

Most of the businesses that filled Main Street in the early 1900s were taken over by the new businesses seen on Main Street today.

Two significant buildings that were neither taken over nor destroyed were the Walker Building and City Hall.

CHANGES IN MARLBOROUGH HIGH

What is known now as the Walker Building used to be Marlborough High School.

Growing up, my great grandmother attended High School in the Walker building. Now, I attend High School at this Marlborough High School on Bolton Street.

CHANGES IN BUSINESS AND LAND

• Marlborough may have been known for it’s shoe manufacturing specifically, but Marlborough still owned land for farming. • Shoe manufacturing companies resided on Marlborough’s

Main Street or on streets that were near Main Street.

• Now, the farm land in Marlborough is miniscule. Marlborough is now filled with businesses. Looking around Marlborough, that all you see.

• TJX companies, Raytheon, Boston Scientific, and many other businesses have resided in Marlborough. • Marlborough’s easy highways access and central city for

many makes it a great business city.
