DEAR PARENTS, CARERS, STUDENTS AND STAFF
Another great half term at Marriotts School is
drawing to a close and I would like to thank staff,
students and parents for their on-going support
of our school. We continue to move forward with
our ambition to be the best possible school that
we can be for our young people. This term has
been particularly challenging for year 11, 12 and
13 students who have worked incredibly hard to
do well in their examinations which have just
started. Students and staff alike have
demonstrated huge commitment, attending extra
revision sessions after school and at weekends.
Everyone has worked unbelievably hard and we
wish all of our students the best of luck over the
coming weeks.
Behaviour for learning at Marriotts continues to
improve as we begin to embed our student
charter. Our behaviour policy had just been
revamped and will shortly be available for
parents to view on the website, having been
ratified by governors last week.
We would like to thank our fantastic new Year
Managers and Pastoral/SEND Assistant Heads
along with our existing pastoral team for all the
work that they are doing to improve our school.
Attendance continues to improve this year but
can I make a special plea to parents to ensure
that their children are in school on time every
day. Lateness, unnecessary absence and holidays
in term time have a hugely detrimental effect on
students’ progress as you will see from the
attendance section later in this newsletter.
We would like to remind parents about our
uniform expectations. We expect all our students
to be in full uniform all of the time. We would like
to point out that trainers, leggings and piercings
are not allowed at any time.
Another key factor which will help students to
concentrate in school is diet. Students must
ensure they are having a healthy breakfast and
eating the right things throughout the day. They
should try to avoid eating sugary snacks during
school hours as this adversely affects their
concentration. I would like to thank parents for
their continued assistance in this. You will notice
from later in this newsletter that we are banning
energy drinks in this school.
You will also see later in the letter the many
rewards out students receive for good conduct
and progress. I am particularly impressed by the
increasing numbers of learning legends we have
in school and the number of students who are
bringing work to me when they receive
Headteachers commendations. We are
continually developing our rewards and I want to
congratulate all students who Aim high, Work
hard and Are kind every day.
As we move into the summer term there are
more trips and visits taking place and I would like
to thank all staff and students who took part in
the recent trips to Germany for representing the
school so well.
This term we have continued to grow our staff
team ready for our new Year 7 group which is
oversubscribed and I’m happy to announce we
have made several outstanding appointments in
English, Geography, Business Studies and
Mathematics.
I’m sure that like myself and all the Marriotts
team you are delighted that we continue to grow
and improve. I wish you a restful half term break.

WAR HORSE THEATRE TRIP REVIEW
On Wednesday 2 April
approximately 30 Year 7
students who had worked
well and had been well-
behaved throughout the
two previous terms went to watch War Horse at
the New London Theatre in Drury with Miss
Stewart, Miss Hearn, Mrs Matharu and Mr
Vavala.
We went to watch the theatre production as we
were studying War Horse last half-term. During
the lessons, we read the book by Michael
Morpurgo and watched the film so the English
department thought it would be a good idea for
us to go and watch the theatre production and
see the interpretation of the amazing story.
During the production, I thought the
puppeteering was so outstanding to the degree
that we forgot that the animals were not real. I
felt that the theatre production was going to be
very challenging to ensure it was equally as good
as the film, but in my opinion it exceeded my
expectations.
Everyone that went on the trip thoroughly
enjoyed themselves and wished that they could
see the production again. Nobody wanted it to
end although it was a very late evening. I believe
that it was extremely
beneficial and
educational.
Thank you to all of
the teachers for
taking us!

HISTORY BATTLEFIELDS TRIP 11-12 JULY 2014 A trip has been planned to the First World War Battlefields of Belgium in the Summer Term 2014. This trip will tie in with the Year 9 History curriculum in which students will have studied the First World War. It is a wonderful opportunity to visit historical sites – an important aspect of the study of history. It is also a chance to commemorate the war dead of Hertfordshire, Great Britain and the Empire.
The provisional itinerary includes visits to Hill 62
and Hill 60 near Ypres, the museum in Ypres,
Menin Gate in Ypres and Tyne Cot and Langemark
Cemeteries. We will be staying in Ypres with the
battlefields in close proximity.
COMENIUS-FUNDED EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO
HAMBURG, GERMANY: WEDNESDAY 9 - SUNDAY
13 APRIL 2014
Mrs A Taylor and four Year 9 students (Liam Spraggs, Conor Stewart, Alfie Aylott and Keiran Cross) were excited to take part in the Comenius project ‘Good Food Good Mood’, travelling to Hamburg in Germany for five days. Mrs Taylor said that two of the boys had not flown before and the excitement began as they took off from Luton on the 9 April. ‘The trip was a fascinating few days of culture experiences and fun, with the first day held at the Gymnasium Finkenwerder, (the German School) where the boys met with all the other students and teachers that took part in the Comenius project. During the school day the boys listened to all the projects that each delegation had prepared and it was so impressive to see all the schools presenting in very good
English, our students were impressed but glad they didn’t have to present in another language!
Delivering the presentation on Good Food
All the boys at the Hamburg Hard Rock Cafe
The whole group of schools that attended the Comenius project including schools from Romania, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, Scotland and Germany.
On the second
day we took a
visit to a
Russian non –
nuclear
submarine U-
434, which was a really fascinating experience along
with eating out in a Turkish restaurant.

The third day was spent on another boat the Cap
San Diego which was a really interesting Cargo
ship, the boys also had the chance to do a little
shopping in Hamburg - they found a Subway
sandwich shop and were happy with their
purchases. The last full day was spent at the
Minature Wonderland which was amazing, a
great hobby of the Germans by all accounts!
Lastly, but by no means least, a great farewell
party was held on a boat travelling up and down
the river Elbe which is the second largest port in
Europe. All the students enjoyed music from their
iPods for the entertainment, which was an
interesting mix along with a hearty Cornish pasty
and a late night. Finally it was the last day and all
the students were sad to say goodbye to each
other after such a great trip‘.
GERMAN LANGUAGE TRIP TO HAMBURG
The annual Marriotts German exchange with Gymnasium Finkenwerder is an excellent and beneficial experience for all! Firstly, you meet so many new friends and have the
opportunity to live a German style of life for a whole week. Every day is jam-packed with school experiences, excursions and local activities! This year was the second time I have visited Germany, however for this occasion I partook in a work experience programme. This was enjoyable plus productive and it was a real treat to work in a German class with its pupils. I really got a lot out of it such as language and people skills, confidence, an insight into German teaching, new
vocabulary as well as improvement on my pronunciation in my German speaking. I decided to come for a second year as in 2013 I had an amazing time and everyone was so friendly. Also it’s not every day you can do work experience in a different country! While we were in Hamburg it was the Harbour’s 825th birthday. The streets were filled with intriguing and traditional German stalls along with tremendous atmosphere even though it was a bit drizzly. By Katie On Tuesday the 13th of May we went to Lüneburg, which is a small town about thirty minutes away from Finkenwerder. Not only is it a great place for shopping but also a beautiful and historical place. One of my favourite buildings is the church with the wonky tower, which was built by the drunken builder. After arriving at the town hall we were allowed to go off shopping and sightseeing in groups. Me, Kirsten, Alia, Sarah, Mollie and Tabea went for McDonalds before exploring and shopping. As we had come the previous year Mollie and I were able to guide the others, which was nice after a week of our exchange partners helping us. Before heading back to Finkenwerder we also went swimming in the local pool. Not only did it have an outside pool, an inside pool and two hot tubs but also an awesome slide which was very fun. As well as relaxing I also got a quick swimming lesson from Alfie. Unfortunately we missed our train so had to wait an hour, but this was a great excuse for a second McDonalds! After the train and ferry we arrived back in Finkenwerder at seven o’clock. The exchange was a great experience. Not only did it help with my pronunciation and understanding of German but also with my knowledge of German culture. I also made a lot of new friends, who I am now very close to. By Freya For most of the students on the exchange, it was their first time going. But for me, Freya, Hannah, Katie and Lizzie, it was our second time. Some of us came back because we missed Germany and wanted to re-live the experience, some of us

because we wanted to see our old exchange partners, even if it was just once. Others came back because they wanted to work on their German pronunciation and learn new words and phrases, they wanted to know more about the culture, and, most importantly, they wanted to help out the German students with their English. But, I do think that there is one reason why we all came back - the food. By Mollie
BTEC END OF COURSE CONCERTS
Marriotts students hosted two final concerts last
half-term with the Year 11s and the Year 12/13
performing highly successful BTEC concerts to a
large audience of parents, peers teachers and
students.
SIMPLIFYING TRACKING OF KS3 STUDENTS
As a school we are looking to simplify the way we track students’ progress throughout their KS3 pathway. This will be based on clear assessment which will be specifically related to key skills they need in each subject. This system will enable students to know exactly where they are and how to improve as they will be able to quickly identify the skill areas where they are not fully secure. We will update parents as we develop this area. HOMEWORK The school is continuing to improve its approach to Homework. Homework from all subject areas and year groups will be updated on the website during the first week back after the half-term. As a school we are looking at ways to improving the system for next academic year to make it easier and more flexible. We will update you as we move forward. TEACHING AND LEARNING We are continuously driving to improve standards of teaching and learning. There have been significant improvements this year. Regular staff training, and rigorous monitoring and tracking has supported these improvements. We have particularly focused on improving
marking and homework over the last half term. We have continued to develop and improve the behaviour and rewards systems in class with the use of a 'student charter'. This has been produced in liaison with the student council to ensure that the students have an input in classroom practice at Marriotts. Students have also observed teachers and fed back to them. This project has included a visit from 12 students from another school to complete joint observations and feedback with the students. As we continue to move forward we will continue to concentrate on five key focus areas: 1) Lesson non-negotiables: all staff are provided with a list of lesson non-negotiables that are expected at Marriotts which include always having a clear starter to engage the students straight into their learning and tasks to track students learning throughout the lesson. 2) Questioning: for engagement and progress 3) Marking 4) Homework 5) Assessment for learning: students knowing their grade/level, and how to get to the next grade/level ATTENDANCE Our overall attendance is currently 93%, which is
up be a whole ‘percent’ on this this time last year.
Therefore, we again seem to be making good
progress towards successfully achieving our
target of 96%. We would like to thank students,
parents and carers for their continued support.
Here are a few tips to help us reach our goal:
Holidays should be booked outside of
term time.
Medical appointments, where possible,
should be made at the end of the school
day. We are aware that circumstances do
not always allow for this but the

expectation that students should attend
school before/after the appointment.
Our registers close at 9am, students
arriving after this time accrue an
unauthorised morning session which
impacts their attendance and that of the
school.
MARRIOTTS SIXTH FORM Mr Illingworth and I would like to congratulate
the current year 12 and 13 students for their
positivity and co-operation in the launch of the
new Sixth Form at Marriotts School. Students
have settled into the new bespoke sixth form
area and have being working hard in preparation
for the AS and A-level examinations, as well as
ensuring all BTEC work is completed to a high
standard.
After the half term break our current Year 12
students will begin their Year 13 studies. Teaching
begins for these courses on June 2nd and runs all
the way to the end of the summer term. On
Tuesday 17th June all year 12 students are invited
to attend a trip to Alexandra Palace to visit the
Hertfordshire UCAS Convention which will allow
them to gather information from a wide range of
universities to assist in their applications to
Higher Education. We will be launching the UCAS
application process after Half term.
We are delighted to have over 80 students from
our current Year 11 apply to attend Marriotts
Sixth Form in September. We have planned an
exciting induction programme including; study
skills sessions, taster lessons, ‘Wise Up’ at
Barnwell School as well as a visit to the University
of Bedfordshire. This induction programme will
run from 8.40 am on Monday 7th July and finish at
4.00pm Wednesday 9th July and is compulsory for
all students wishing to join the Marriotts Sixth
Form in September.
We have been impressed with the conduct of our
students but would like to remind all students the
following are a basic expectations every day.
Arrive at school every day for registration at 8:30am. Only on their allocated ‘enrichment day’, or when guesting at other consortium schools may they not be in the school building
Remain in school for all directed study periods

INTRODUCTION OF NEW STAFF Suzanne Thrower
I am Suzanne Thrower the new Assistant Head of SEND, Gifted and Talented and Personalised learning. This is a timely appointment with the new SEND Code of Practice coming into practice from September. I am a retired police officer from the Metropolitan Police who subsequently became the SENCo at Presdales School in Ware, an outstanding school. I am really excited to be here at Marriotts and I am looking forward to helping to facilitate change by using my knowledge and recently acquired MA in Inclusive Education (SEN) to move Marriotts forward. Lesley Tether
I am Lesley Tether and am the new Assistant
Head, with responsibility for Pastoral Care. My
role is to help ensure that every student at
Marriotts feels that they are part of a caring and
supportive environment, that enables them to
flourish and reach their potential. By potential I
don’t just mean leaving school with a number of
qualifications but also with the personal qualities
and life skills which will enable them to achieve
their life goals. Part of my responsibility is to
develop the pastoral programme and embed that
with the school ethos and values. These values
would include students that are caring and
respectful to all members of the school
community, whilst also having a positive attitude
to learning. Student will at times sometimes fall
short of our expectations, if so we expect them to
accept the consequences and learn from the
experience. We will help as much as possible to
get them back on the right track and we
appreciate all the support that parents give us in
these circumstances. It is also essential as a
school that we recognise when students are
doing their best and reward them accordingly.
My role as rewards co-ordinator is a central part
of my job and an enjoyable one too. I hope to
help ensure that all students feel valued and are
encouraged to make a positive contribution to
school life. I also hope to build on the school’s
existing enrichment activities as students can gain
so much from these.
ENERGY DRINKS
We are banning energy drinks in
our school. Drinks such as Monster,
Red Bull and Relentless are packed
with sugar and caffeine. The British
Soft Drinks Association states that
energy drinks are not suitable for
children and some supermarkets,
such as Morrisons, refuse to sell energy drinks to
under 16s.
Some 500ml cans contain more than
13 teaspoons of sugar and 160mg of
caffeine – which is about the same as
in four cans of cola.
Too much caffeine can cause hyperactivity and sleeping problems. Many people have reported feeling sick, shaky and dizzy and they have been associated with speedy heartbeats or palpitations. And the excessive sugar loads the body with
calories and can cause weight gain.
Energy drinks brought into school will be confiscated.

KEEP KIDS SAFE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM The following Keep Kids Safe contact numbers may be useful:- Absence Alert Text Number 07624 815175 This is the virtual mobile number from which absence alert SMS text messages are sent to parents/carers. Parents/carers who reply to absence alerts will send their texts to this number. Absence Hotline Number 08442 393197 This is the number parents call to access the automated Keep Kids Safe at School™ absence hotline. This number is quoted in Absence Alerts. Please use the above numbers to report your child’s absence or alternatively you can call the school on 01438 726999 (option 1 for Marriotts, followed by option 2 for the absence line). Group Messaging Text Number 07624 815174 This is the virtual mobile number from which Group SMS text messages are sent to parents/carers and the number to which your reply text will be sent. Keep Kids Safe Communication system
Keep Kids Safe is an automatic system that
generates a text if your child has not registered in
school before 9.15am.
Unfortunately, if you tell someone other than the
attendance officer that your child will be absent,
the message does not always get through before
the texts are sent.
For this reason we have a dedicated telephone
number for you to call 01438 726999 option 1
(Marriotts) and option 2 (absence).
As with any system, errors can be made and the
school apologises in advance if you receive a text
although you have reported your child absent.
EMERGENCY CLOSURE AND BAD WEATHER If we have very bad weather or other emergencies that prevent the school from opening, please listen for announcements on BOB
FM (106.7 and 106.9). Information will also be available at www.hertsdirect.org. Please note that although we will continue to notify local radio in the event of an emergency closure and will update the website as soon as we are able, our primary method of communication will be by text to the number identified as the primary parent/carer for each of the students in the school. As a result of this, it is essential that we have your up to date mobile phone number. If you are unsure whether or not you have notified us of your mobile number, please send a note to the school with your contact details and a request for your number to be checked on the system. Please discuss with your child what you would want them to do in the event of any sudden closure during the day, i.e. should they go to a designated friend’s house. This is especially important for students who do not live locally. CONTACT DETAILS It is vital that we have up to date contact information for you on our database. We are sending most correspondence out electronically now, so you are informed immediately of current news/events. If we do not hold an email for Contact 1 then any correspondence home will be handed to your child via the register. Please visit the “Contact Us” page on www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk This is one way of sending your new or updated details and we will amend upon receipt.
