Chris Elliott
Chris Elliott is a Hawke's Bay artist who was born in Uganda, moved to England when
he was 6 and finally to New Zealand in 1974 where he earned his living as a musician
for18 years.
In his own words, he is an 'eclectic, multi-talented artist working in a variety of media and
styles'. He has been commissioned to create a number of public sculptures in bronze :
bust of Gottfried Lindauer, the NZ portraitist, life-size bronze sculptures of John
Balance and Peter Snell for the Wanganui City Council.
He has studied under Alan Brown and attended various workshops in painting, drawing,
sculpture, particularly carving greenstone, marble, wood and bone.

Rowan Baker
An up and coming artist, Rowan Baker was born and remains located in Hawke's Bay.
At the young age of fourteen he started honing his abilities of manipulating materials,
firstly in Bone & Pounamu, next adding wood to the mix, creating small contemporary
pieces of sculpture.
After spending a number of years focusing on the trade of cabinet-making, he has
returned to his roots with his newly developed skills in precision grinding, designing
pendants and cabinets thus creating personal sculptures for men and women in a range of
materials.

Lynden Over
Lynden Over has studied glass extensively. His training was at Northland polytechnic
where he completed the diploma of applied arts, majoring in glass and jewellery. On the
completion of his study he continued to work in glass renting a local glass studio where he
developed his own original range of collectable glassware. In 2002 Lynden, Christine and
family moved to Taupo and opened Lava Glass – Glass Blowing Studio and Gallery.
All work in the gallery is made on the premises.

Judith Rosamund
I work predominately in ceramics and glass but incorporate other mediums as needed.
Currently I am using LED lights in my sculptures and a modified screen printing process
with my ceramics.
One of my favourite formats is the tile; an interest that began many years ago after a visit
to the Alhambra in southern Spain. The many examples of beautiful handmade tiles in
this old Moorish castle inspired me to start making my own when I returned to New
Zealand. Over the years since, I have developed a wide range of ceramic and glass tile
making techniques.

Keith Mahy
Keith Mahy is one of the founding fathers of art glass in New Zealand. He studied
sculpture and design at Elam School of Fine Arts. His career in glass started in 1970
when he was appointed Design Director at Crown Crystal Glass in Christchurch.
Keith designed many of the successful ranges of glassware produced by Crown Crystal
Glass.
In 1976 Keith started making his own glass creations from a studio he built in a derelict
cow shed just north of Hikurangi at Otonga, Northland.
Over the years, Keith has won many awards and has exhibited his work widely overseas.
In 1984 and 1985 he won Phillips Studio Glass Awards, and in 1986 he became tutor in
Glass and Design at Northland Polytechnic.

Neil Hanna
Neil Hanna is a well-known New Zealand artist who has had a lifetime interest in
collecting, cutting and carving stones.
Originally trained as a jeweller, he worked in London where he studied gemmology,
graduating as a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 1971.
Neil has since worked as a professional artist in Auckland. During that time he has built
his reputation on lapidary and stone cutting techniques.
Materials such as nephrite jade, opal and lapis lazuli feature in his work.

Luke Jacomb
"Once glass gets a hold of you, it's impossible to break free," says Luke Jacomb, who
must have crystalline coursing through his blood. His father, John Croucher, is a well-
known glass artist who, in the 70s, started one of the first glass-blowing co-op studios in
New Zealand.
A chip off the old block, Jacomb is a master of glass blowing, an under-appreciated art-
form that embraces thousands of techniques.
"You never, ever learn everything about it. Some days I hate it but glass is still my
teacher," he says.
Known for his impossibly beautiful, intricately detailed blown-glass paddles, Jacomb
brings a breadth of experience to his work.
With a solid grounding in glass chemistry from his dad, he lived for eight years in the US
where he was fortunate to spend summers working at the Corning Museum of Glass.
There he was classically trained by virtuosos such as Elio Quarisa, a primo maestro of
Murano glass work.

Peter Mitchell
Peter is New Zealand born of European-Maori-Pitcairn Island descent. Bone carving is
a traditional New Zealand Maori craft and it is on this culture that his contemporary
designs are based. Fishing is an important part of Maori culture, and this is reflected in
his carvings depicting dolphins, whales tails and fishhooks.
Another key element in many designs is the Koru, which is designed from the new fern
frond as it opens. His carvings are made from beef (bovine) bone and whale bone and
have been featured in Galleries, Museums and quality Souvenir outlets throughout New
Zealand for 22 years. He has also had his work exhibited in the UK where he exhibited
in National Trust Galleries.

Ron van der Vlugt A life-long fascination with moving colour and light motivates glass blower Ron van der
Vlugt. His work has a sense of movement, an instant of fluid light and colour frozen in
glass.
As a child Ron experimented in the dark with torches and pieces of coloured plastic from
car tail lights. As a glass blower, he is intrigued by the elusive challenge of capturing the
shifting qualities of light and colour as the glass moves from a glowing, flowing, molten
state into a cool, hard, solid shape.
Like the Italian glass blowers, Ron works "hot and fast" with few tools, working the glass
quickly while it is fluid and hot, relying on the natural forces of gravity and spinning to
shape it. He says this makes him more in tune with the glass, so that while he doesn't
always control the tricky medium, at least he understands it.
Ron developed his art first in the US, at California Art Glass, then the Wanganui
Glass Blowing School, and the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in Japan where he was
exposed to Japanese aesthetics and the sophisticated techniques of the Italians. Ron
now works from his own De Flute Glass studio in Rotorua.
