Helen volunteers for us every Monday afternoon – she helps by sorting books and scanning them onto the computer so they can be loaded onto our shops on Amazon and Ebay.

A couple of years ago, Helen was looking for some voluntary work for her 16 year old son. It proved hard to find anywhere that welcomed under 18’s. Luckily we were able to help so Helen decided to join us and her son is still able to help out in the holidays. Helen told us, “You don’t have to be particularly good with computers, I’m not! It’s such a welcoming place; they’re very good at showing you what to do so you can’t go wrong really.

I like seeing the different people you meet here, some people seem to stay for year and others come and go.”

Something very special is happening on East Street in Brighton at the moment – we’ve opened our first pop up specialist shop – Vintage Me ..... Selling furniture from the likes of G Plan and Ercol, clothes from the 20’s through to the 80’s. If you love vintage and can spare a few hours a week to volunteer in Vintage Me, please email our Volunteer Co-ordinators [email protected]

Martlets Hospice NEWS 3

Every year, Legal & General employees are nominated by their colleagues for a Chairman’s Award. This year two of the winners were Martlets Hospice supporters – Erika Percy and Lin Abel - all the winners received a cheque for £500 to go to the charity of their choice. Erika and Lin chose the Martlets!

Lin’s Story

Lin has volunteered as an evening receptionist on our InPatient Unit for nearly two years now. But that’s not all Lin does for the Martlets. “My friends and colleagues at Legal & General have been fabulously supportive. For two years now we’ve held a ‘Cardless Christmas’ with the proceeds going to the Martlets. Everyone at the Martlets is so appreciative of the volunteers.

Maddie and Iris Maddie is one of our Arts and Crafts volunteer; she comes to the InPatient Unit with all her beautiful bits of arts and crafts to help our patients be creative. Iris’s illness has meant she can’t use her fingers very well so without help crafts are impossible.Volunteers have helped Iris to paint glasses and decorate Easter eggs.

Miniature Marvel raises £500 for the Martlets

Diane Cooper made this

incredible miniature florist

shop from a rabbit hutch! Her

daughter Rebecca told us

why, “My Dad was there for a

short time, the nurses were so

good and so caring. They really

were lovely to him and all of

our family, right until the end.

So Mum is very happy to raise

£500 for the Martlets, and I’m

very proud of her”

Staff made sure our patients had a good Easter with chocolate eggs, presents and kept them entertained with an egg and spoon race!

Personally, I think that giving up 3 hours a week to help such a fabulous organisation is very rewarding. I’d encourage everyone to do some voluntary work, even if they can only spare one day a year, or a couple of hours every few months, it really does make a difference.”

Erika’s Story

In 2012 Erika’s husband Jim passed away after a long illness aged just 44. Before his death, Jim had started to arrange a raffle in aid of the Martlets. He’d vowed to raise £10,000 for the hospice, unfortunately, Jim died before he could finish the raffle he had worked hard to set up. But that wasn’t the end of the story. “His friends all rallied round to finish this in his memory. They also arranged a football match between the teams Jim

used to play for and against - The Neville vs Southwick. When we were about £300 short of the £10k target Jim had first set himself, one of his friends donated the difference. I am forever grateful to all our friends and family for all the support they have given us and to the Martlets for everything during the worst time of our lives.”

Thanks to your donations we’re supporting more patients than

ever before.Palliative Care Partnership

We’re very pleased to tell you that our Hospice at Home team have joined forces with the Community Palliative Care team from the Sussex Community NHS Trust to deliver a new specialist advice and support service for people in Brighton and Hove affected by life limiting illnesses.

The new service is the Palliative Care Partnership. We’ll be offering telephone advice and support for local patients who are affected by advanced cancer and other life limiting illnesses. The team of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and social workers will be able to care for patients and their carers in their own home, seven days a week. Access to this new service is via referral from your GP or healthcare professional.

Welfare Benefits

We’re working with Macmillan, Age UK Brighton & Hove and the Community Palliative Care team on this project.

So, how can we help?

Our Volunteer Welfare Benefits Advisers are able to offer practical support with:

- Welfare Benefit entitlement checks

- Applying for Welfare Benefits, whether that’s completing forms, making phone calls or letter writing.

- Accessing Macmillan and other charitable grants

- Applying for help with health costs, such as travel to hospital

- Applying for transport concessions, such as a disabled parking badge

- Benefits appeals and decisions

- Referrals to other service providers

Caring for Carers

We know that carers often have a very important and difficult role in caring for a family member with a life limiting illness, so we’ve teamed up with the Carers Centre in Brighton to provide a series of support groups. Dawn Allen, Martlets Chaplain and Stuart Carter, one of our Social Workers will be on hand to offer

advice along with Sara Padhiar-Tutton from the Carers Centre. The six week programme will run fortnightly from Tuesday 7th May until Tuesday 16th July.

If you are interested in coming along please call Sara Padhiar-Tutton at the Carers centre on 01273 746222.

Lloyds TSB chooses the Martlets

Over the last year the Martlets and Lloyds TSB have strengthened their relationship through Lloyds TSB Day to Make A Difference. This enables their employees to volunteer one day a year to a charity. The Martlets have benefited from this with work in the garden and also help at fundraising events. The Lloyds TSB foundation gives each employee the opportunity to match fund any money they have raised for a charity up to the value of £500.

This generous support means that Lloyds TSB have now raised over £15,000 for the Hospice. We’re very pleased to announce that the Martlets Hospice has been chosen as their charity of the year for 2013/2014!

Volunteer Week

Volunteers’ Week is an annual promotion and recognition of volunteers and the valuable work they do, and takes place between 1 -7 June.

Following our successful Volunteer Recruitment Day last year, we are aiming to organise another of these events on Thursday 6th June at the hospice in order to attract new people to come and join our team of hard-working and wonderful volunteers.

As the Hospice continues to seek ways to further develop its services, in particular by expanding its retail outlets in order to

generate much-needed income, our reliability on the goodwill of volunteers is greater than ever.

The time of the event is yet to be confirmed but is hoped to start in the afternoon and continue into the evening, in order to include those people wishing to volunteer but have work commitments. Watch out for forthcoming publicity - we look forward to seeing you there!

Conversations For Life

Talking about what you want to happen when you reach the end of your life may be one of the most difficult conversations you’ll ever have with a loved one. But it may be one of the most important. Conversations for Life is a film and a card game, the cards are like an ‘icebreaker’ to help you talk through what you think is going to be important to you.

Some of the wishes on the cards are “to be able to talk about what frightens me” “to prevent arguments by making sure my family knows what I want” “to be free from pain”.

As part of this year’s Dying Matters week we’re holding two Conversations for Life workshops at the Martlets Hospice. Both sessions are free and open to everyone.

Wednesday 15th May at 1.30pm Thursday 16th May at 7pm

THE MARTLETS MIDNIGHT WALK

raising money for the Martlets Hospice

Entry is only £15 – places are limited

Martlets supporter, Victoria Bryan, has written a short book about loss, “Jazz Says Goodbye” which has just been published on Amazon as an e-book (£5.99).

Victoria explained why she was inspired to write it: “Until my mother died from a brain tumour in November, 2011, her Tibetan Terrier, Jazz, had been her close companion — particularly since my father died in 2003. Jazz and I took care of my mother for the last few months of her life and it made perfect sense that Jazz would help me with my own journey through grief. During the brief two months between my mother’s diagnosis and death, an amazing team of caregivers supported us, including the wonderful Martlets Hospice nurses. In the many long walks Jazz and I took along seafront, photography became my walking meditation and my mind wrapped around the idea of creating a book. It helped me and I hope it will help others, of all ages, who have lost someone they love.” All proceeds from the sale of this book will support the work of the Hospice.

Supporters Stories

Jude’s Gems Jude Stokes received some devastating news last year, this is her story.

“December 31st 2012 my life changed forever.”

“In a nutshell I was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer and told treatment would be palliative. A huge blow to me and my family. I’m not one to give up easily, I fight for what I want and believe in, I’ve too much to live for to be going anywhere right now. I’m on chemotherapy and intend to fight this evil disease but I can’t do it alone.

When I was eventually discharged from hospital I began to suffer from severe nausea & vomiting again. The community doctor, based at the Martlets hospice, agreed that I needed an anti sickness syringe driver and daily injections to control my symptoms. This meant I would need daily care which was shared between the district nurse and the Hospice at Home team.

The first time I met the Hospice at Home nurses I was anxious as it meant strangers coming into my home every day and delivering sometimes unpleasant

treatments. I had no reason to be anxious; they immediately put me at ease and were full of compassion and understanding.

They were extremely competent in their nursing role but possibly more importantly than that, was their ability to empathise. The emotional and practical support they gave me and my family was great. They would do everything they could to ensure I was comfortable and symptom free.

Now that my condition is slightly better they don’t need to visit me on a daily basis, but they telephone me regularly to touch base and ensure me and my family are ok.

This service is invaluable and I can’t believe that it’s a charity.

If we don’t help keep this service going by raising awareness and funds, people like me and my family won’t benefit from the care, kindness and compassion that these very special Hospice at Home nurses supply.”

Jude has talked her friends into joining the Midnight Walk – the team is called Jude’s Gems and they have already raised over £2,000 for the Martlets!

Wheelchair MarathonChris Spiggs and his uncle Andrew are running this year’s Brighton marathon to raise money for the Martlets. Running a marathon is challenge enough for most people, but Chris will pushing his uncle round the 26.2 mile course in a wheelchair. This is his story.

We did the Brighton half marathon in February as a “warm up” and completed it in 2 hours.

As Andrew lives in Sussex, the Brighton marathon seemed a sensible choice and I was delighted to see Martlets Hospice were a partner in the event. Having researched the work of the Hospice, they clearly stood out as the perfect choice to run for and did the work to secure us a place, inclusive of the wheelchair! Since then my uncle has been able to tour the hospice and this has only reinforced our shared desire to raise what money and awareness we can.”

Chris and Andrew are raising money for the Martlets and Motor Neurone Disease Association – to make a donation search for pushingforachange on www.virginmoneygiving.com

“Have you ever felt totally compelled to do something even though you’ve never done it before?

I was really shaken when I found out a year ago my Uncle Andrew had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, at age 63, a condition for which there is no known cause and no cure. He was a runner of 36 marathons, and did races longer than that! MND is a harsh

and unpredictable terminal illness; often people have only 2-5 years left to live. My uncle had been an encouragement to me in my first marathon training in 2007 after my mum died of cancer. He gave me advice that helped me not just run, but become a runner. Something which has transformed my life. I felt compelled that even

though his running days were over, forever, his racing days didn’t have

to be. So I suggested I push him round the marathon in his wheelchair.

It’s the little things that make a difference Martlets Care has received a glowing report from the government regulator, the CQC. The Care Quality Commission’s report, published in December 2012, covered five key areas: 1. Standards of treating people with respect and involving them in their care2. Standards of providing care, treatment and support that meets people’s needs3. Standards of caring for people safely and protecting them from harm4. Standard of staffing5. Standards of quality and suitability of management The report passed Martlets Care on all five aspects of its service. The report was very complimentary about the high level of care and professionalism experienced by service users:

Pedal in Preston Park 2013 Sunday 26th October

2013 will be the fourth Pedal in Preston Park, this year’s challenge will be the biggest yet, attempting to cycle the distance of the three great Tour Classics, The Giro d’Italia, The Vuelta a Espana and the Tour de France .

Pedal raises funds for both the Martlets Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association ( MNDA ). Set up in 2010, this cycling fundraising event has raised nearly £40,000 for its nominated charities. The event was created by the family of Rachel Evans - Milne who was cared for by the Martlets during her battle with Motor Neurone Disease, a battle she lost in 2009 aged 44 .

As part of our inspection visit we contacted people using the service and their relatives to find out their views on the care provided. We were told that the care and support was “fabulous, consistent with amazing staff”. One person told us that she received “understated, quiet and efficient care with no fuss”. People were very complimentary about how staff cared for them and the services provided when staff came into their homes. They told us that staff treated them with dignity and respect when undertaking some very personal care. Martlets Care CEO Caroline Lower said:”We are delighted with the recent CQC Report and in particular the comments made by those we care for.

At a time when care providers are under intense scrutiny from the regulators and the media, we are very proud to have received such a positive commendation.”
