Marvellous Race for End of Year
Sunday Sailors Summer Series 2019-20 Race 6
A good course and good weather combined to make the last Sunday race of 2019 a
good one. A south south easterly breeze that averaged about 13 knots for the
morning saw 21 of the 23 starters complete the 9.8 nautical mile course 24 in an
average time of 1:58:59. There was a tight finish with a yacht crossing the finish line
at an average of every 40 seconds with 15 minutes 14 seconds separating first from
last – the closest finish of the summer so far.
There was a record set at the start of the race when 3 yachts, ALEGRIA (Simon
May), LEBROK (Theo Korbel) and SKULLDUGGERY (Garry McCarten) tied for Start
of the Day. BUSHRANGER (Tim Pearce) chalked up her 3rd podium finish of the
series when she was first to cross the finish line. In her 2nd race of the summer
MARAMA (Catherine Dawson) collected a glass by finishing 2nd followed 46 seconds
later by LEBROK in 3rd place. With a time of 1:41:36 BUSHRANGER proved to be
the fastest yacht around the course.
She now leads the summer aggregate with a total of 23 points from LA BELLE VIE
who finished 13th in this race and slips into 2nd place on 31 points with COPYRIGHT
(Stuart Morrison Jack) and HOT CHIPPS (John Chipp) both 2 points behind.
It’s LA BELLE VIE who leads the Sunday Plate from LA MER, DILLI GAFF (Paul
MacBain) and ALEGRIA with SKULLDUGGERY leading the Noelle Coram Trophy
from DEBONNAIRE (Phil Gomez) and RAZZLE DAZZLE (Andrew Stopp & Grahame
Jones).

BUSHRANGER has completed all 5 races this
summer and is the only yacht to have 3 podium
finishes. She began this race from 22nd place 49
seconds late for her 42 handicap. Her elapsed time
was 6 minutes 50 seconds faster than her closest rival
and she crossed the finish line at 11:53:36 – 64
seconds ahead of MARAMA. BUSHRANGER has
improved her position in the aggregate after each race
and holds the lead with a margin of 8 points.
MARAMA made her best start of the summer crossing
the start line from 3rd place only 6 seconds late for her 4
minute handicap. She also made the best of her 3
minute handicap decrease by finishing 2nd in this race
after a 5th place in race 4. MARAMA had the same
handicap as AMICUS II but on this occasion sailed the
course 5 minutes 33 seconds faster to finish 10 places
ahead. MARAMA crossed the finish line at 11:54:40 and
this 2nd place helps her from 32nd to 25th in the
aggregate.
LEBROK is one of 10 yachts to have completed all 5
races this series. She started the race from 18th
place 4 seconds late for her 37 minute handicap
good enough to tie for start of the day. She sailed
the course in the 2nd fastest elapsed time of 1:48:26
and crossed the finish line at 11:55:26. This was the
best finish of the series for LEBROK who now has 3
top ten finishes from her 5 races. She was 10th in the
aggregate after race 5 and has now moved into 6th
place. She is 7th in the contest for the Sunday Plate
and 5th in line for the Noelle Coram Trophy.

It wasn’t the fastest start of the series
but a record 3 yachts all made 4 second
starts in a following breeze. The
median start time was 22 seconds with
10 yachts starting within 10 seconds or
less of their handicaps. At the other end
of the scale 5 yachts were more than a
minute late with LA MER starting 4
seconds too soon.
The 23 starters crossed the start line more than 70 minutes apart but the gap closed
with 21 yachts finishing 15 minutes 14 seconds apart. The closest finish was
between HOT CHIPPS (John Chipp) who crossed the finish line in 8th place beating
FOGGY DEW (Frank
Hilliard & Joe
O’Grady) by 3
seconds. It was the
mid fleet and late
starters who fared
best in the race with 7
of them making up the
first eight to cross the
finish line.
