S iste r J osaphata Ho rodashev skaCo-foundress Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate

Just 10 years after the founding of the Sisters Servants of Maryfunmaculate, its Co-foundress and frst member of theCommunity, Sister Josaphata Horodashevska, missioned 4Sisters from Western Ukraine (Halychyna) to Canada. Theirmandate was to minister to the needs of the immigrants whowere experiencing the harsh realities of pioneer life in a foreignland. On November 1, 1902, Sisters Ambrosia lrnkewich, TaidaWrublewsky, Isidore Shypowsky, and Emilia Klapowchukarrived in Edmonton where they were joyfully welcomed bytheir people. Filled with arduous zeal, the Sisters were to be abeacon of spiritual hope to Ukrainians who were anxious topreserve their religious and cultural heritage.

"You did not choose rne, but I chose you and appointed.you that you should go and bear fruit and thnt yourfruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Fatherin my name, he may give it to you." John: 15

On July 7, 1903, the Sisters founded a convent on a homesteadin the Mundare district. They began a fruitful and variedministry which included a school, an orphanage, and healthcare. With hearts filled with Christian love and compassion, they cared for the sick, using herbal remedies andunsophisticated healing methods that they found effective.

It soon became increasingly apparent that Mundare was one ofthe most neglected rural areas in the provision of medicalservices. During the Spanish influenza epidemic following

Page 9: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

World War I, the Sisters converted their school into atemporary hospital where they tirelessly ministered to the sick. Not one patient who was in the Sisters' improvised hospitaldied from this vicious pestilence. In fact, more than 300 liveswere saved because of the services rendered by the Sisters.

In 1928, the idea flourished that the Sisters Servants of MaryImmaculate construct and operate a hospital. The approval forsuch a facility was granted by Provincial Superior. SisterAthanasia Melnyk and her council. Shortly thereafter, theblueprints were prepared and a campaign committee wasestablished to raise $20,000. People responded generously bycontributing money or produce, and by supporting fundraisingprojects such as concerts and bazaars. Despite their nobleefforts, only $1700 was raised. The Sisters then obtained aloan for $ 18000, and with monetary donations from manybenefactors in Mundare and surrounding areas such as Lamont,Skaro, Andrew, and Myrnam, the dream was finally realizec. On September 22, 1929, His Excellency Bishop Ladyka OSBMofficiated at the blessing of the cornerstone of Canada's firstUkrainian hospital, the Mundare General Hospital. The cost ofthe completed structure, including furnishings and equipment, was $38,932. The hospital was truly a testament of the sacrificeand hard work of the first pioneers - the pastors, Sisters, andlaity.

The official opening of Mundare General Hospital was held onMay 29, 1930. A long-awaited dream had been fulfilled.

Sister Gertrude Lesiuk was appointed the first Administrator, and Sister Macrina Schab was the Director of Nursing.Through their tireless efforts, they set up an accredited hospitalaccording to the specirlcations of the Alberta government and

Page 10: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

the American Hospital Association. This was truly aremarkable accomplishment.

The Sisters at the General Hospital provided compassionatecare, epitomizing the deeds performed by Christ the Healer. The first patient, Mr. John Franchuk, was admitted onDecember 20,1929. Mr. O. Filevich was the first patient toundergo surgery which was performed by Dr. N.C. Strilchuk, assisted by Dr. J. Yakimischak, in February 1930. On January31, 1930, the first baby, Mary Shelast, daughter of Mr. andMrs. William Fedoruk, was bom in this new rural facility.

Both patients and Sisters rejoiced when the first liturgy wascelebrated by Father Kamenecky, OSBM in May 1930.

During the Depression years, the hospital struggled to survive, and often its success seemed a futile goal. Since money was ascarce commodity, hospital bills were often paid in produce, ifat all. In spite of all the difficulties, the health care ministrymanaged to flourish under the expertise and dedication of theSisters and Dr. Strilchuk.

The best portion of a good man's lifeHis little namelessunremembered actsOf kindness and of love.

William Wordsworth

Doctor N.C. Strilchuk anived in Mundare in 1926, and set up amedical practice that would span close to 50 years of dedicatedlife-healing service. He administered to the sick from hisoffice, the hospital, or in their homes. He faced formidablesituations such as bitter winter storms and virtuallv impassable

Page 11: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

roads with courage, hope, and determination. Doctor Strilchukunselfishly gave of himself, both to his community and hiswork, with kindness, compassion, humor, and humility. Helived the words: "... come follow Me and I will make vou ahealer of men."

In June 1936, the hospital was transformed into a scenic settingwhen several dedicated volunteers began the work oflandscaping the grounds. Other volunteers assisted in amultitude of tasks such as planting a bountiful garden, painting, canning vegetables, and making pillows. John Lapicki, arecent immigrant from Westem Ukaine, secured employmentas a maintenance man at the hospital and embarked on a laborof love with his expertise in various areas, ranging fromplumbing to gardening.

The Sisters alone continued to provide total care to the patients, ministering to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. In1940, the first lay nurse, Miss Catherine McKele, was hired;her salary was $45 a month.

In the 1950's. Mr. Nestor Chmilar hand-carved a beautiful altarfor the hospital chapel. It was consecrated according toEastem-Rite tradition and is still used todav.

To commemorate the Hundredth Anniversarv of Our Ladv ofLourdes, a glorious statue of Our Lady was iurchased toenhance the beauty of the hospital grounds.

In 1960, an Advisory Board was formed under thechairmanship of Mr. William llkiw. Its pu{pose was to assist inhospital management.

Page 12: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

In July 1962, the By-laws of lncorporation of Mundare GeneralHospital were enacted, and the name was changed to MaryImmaculate Hospital of Mundare.

In April 1971 the Mundare Hospital Auxiliary was formedunder the direction of Mrs. Vera Siracky.

On September 13, 1978, the community again rejoiced at thesod-turning ceremonies for a new 30-bed complex that wouldreplace the timewom and inadequate facilities. His ExcellencyBishop Neil Savaryn OSBM officiated at the blessing of thenew site.

The official opening of the new hospital was held onNovember 18,1979. It was a 30-bed complex with both activeand extended care facilities. Mary Immaculate also provideddiagnostic, treatment, rehabilitative, and emergency services. In recent years, the hospital has witnessed many changes in theservices that it provides.

In 1994, Regional Health Authorities were established underthe Regional Health Authorities Act. Mary ImmaculateHospital was incorporated into the Lakeland Regional HealthAuthority, offering 23 conrinuing care beds. In 1999, thenumber of beds increased to 28 continuing care beds and 2respite or palliative care beds.

The Alberta govemment's most recent restructurins of itshealth regions resulted in Mary Immaculate Hospitlal becomingpart of the East Central Health Regional Health Authority inApril 2003. It continues to operate 28 continuing care beds and2 respite or palliative care beds.

Page 13: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

Since its inception in 1929, Mary Immaculate Hospital haslived up to its mission statement of being a Ukrainian Catholicrural facility, committed to the healing mission of Jesus. SisterEugenia Stefaniuk SSMI and her staff continue to providecompassionate care and services for their residents, many ofwhom are long-time residents of Mundare and surroundingdistricts. Auxilians and volunteers bringjoy and solace to thepatients by devoting time to them individually, as well asengaging in group activities, hospital functions, and fund-raising activities The advisory Board continues to assist in themanagement of the hospital.

May God bestow His abundant graces of health and happinessupon all those who have been associated with MaryImmaculate Hospital and those who continue to work for Hisglory. May He grant eternal rest and memory to those whohave deoarted to Eternal Life.

Today marks a milestone in the journey in the life of the MaryImmaculate Hospital of Mundare. It is 75 yea$ since 4 SistersServants of Mary Immaculate left the comforts of a knowncountry Ukraine, and ventured across the ocean to a foreigncountry, Canada. They were sent by their foundress SisterJosaphata Hordashevska on a new rnission to be a beacon oflight for our Ukrainian people. This was a new challenge forthe sisters; it was like stepping from light to darkness, notknowing what lay ahead of them. They went in faith, knowingthat God would be present to them at all timbs.

Arriving in Mundare, Nov.1902 they began weaving thetapestry of their life journey, light began to fill their days andin spite of their hardships and difficulties, they were filled withpeace. The reward of their sacrifice was to see the smiles, thejoy and happiness on the faces of the people with whom theyworked, prayed, played and broke bread together.

Today we look to the past for strength and encouragement. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and thanksgiving for thesolid foundation that was laid down for us by our pioneerSisters, Fathers and the people. The foundation was based onthe love of God, a stfong faith, and in working together inharmony, sharing, helping and supporting one another.

Although times were difficult, progress was made. The firsthospital was built in 1929, and the second hospital was built in1979.

With time change takes place, and we too must submit tochange in this fast-changing world. Let us not forget our rootsand continue to build on the solid foundation that was preparedfor us by our pioneers. Let us live today to the fullest, and look

Page 31: Mary Immaculate Hospital Mundare, Alberta 1929-2004 75th

to the future with faith, hope, and prayer that God will contrnueto lead and guide us as we walk ahead, working together inharmony for the greater glory of God and the good of allpeople.

We are proud of our beginnings for Sr. Josaphata had a vision;she dreamed a dream, a seed was planted and the health care rnMundare began to grow and blossom. We must continue togive life to our health care system, always bearing in mind thepurpose ofour being here is to love and serve God,s people. Asit was in the past, is today and will continue into the future. themost important person here is the patient and the people whowalk into our facility seeking holistic healing and a feeling thatthey are being listened to because they are important.

My heart is full of emotion; it is filled with much joy, gratitudeand thanksgiving first of all to God who inspired SisterJosaphata to start a mission in Canada for His Grace andpresence amongst us at all times.

For the past 75 years we were blessed with a dedicated medicalstaff. We thank them for their faithfulness to their Drofessionand the excellent care given to their patients. They were alwaysready to bring comfort and healing to the sick. No matter whattime of the day or night the call came, they were ready to serve. We especially pay tribute to our late Dr. Strilchuk who was aself-sacrificing, dedicated physician. He was there workinqhard to build rhe hospiral in 1929 and again in 1979. He willalways be fondly remembered with love, respect and gratitude.

A sincere thank you to our Advisory Board for sharing yourwisdom and talents as you helped and guided us in our decisionmaking for the betterment of our Hospital. Thank you for such
