Growth Mindset and a Supportive Environment⚫ A teacher who has the growth mindset: "People who believe their talents can be developed (through

hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts). This is because they worry less about looking smart and they put more energy into learning. When entire organizations embrace a growth mindset, their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they also receive far greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation. " -Carol Dweck

⚫ A supportive learning environment is less about the physical classroom and resources (though these are important) than it is about values and relationships. In a genuinely supportive learning environment, every student feels valued, included, and empowered.

Ensuring equity of voice for our students –

⚫ CPS Student Bill of Rights

⚫ Encouraging students to be part of our Culture and Climate Team

⚫ Creating differentiated experiences for our children.

Attendance is a Key Focus for 2019 -20

⚫ Attendance from the CPS reporting system called Dashboard will be used to identify students who are truant or who have excessive absences.

⚫ When a student is identified as a truant, frequently tardy, or has multiple early dismissals, a home visit and or counseling session in-school will take place with the parent / guardian and student.

⚫ Parent and guardian will have a conference in-school and an attendance plan will be created.

⚫ Perfect attendance students will be recognized at our bi-annual school award assemblies for perfect attendance.

⚫ Students will also be eligible to participate in our Lyon Paw Raffles and incentives at the end of each school month

Problem SolvingProblem Solving is not about the answer it is about the process.

For example: A 3 reads strategy can be used as problem-solving process. I am asking each teacher to have a 3 read strategy for their students.

The new way of doing math takes much longer than that of traditional math –please keep in mind what the process is teaching the student.

Close Reading StrategiesClose reading is a careful and purposeful reading and/or rereading of a text, using text-dependent questions to guide reading toward a specific purpose that the teacher sets at the beginning. The teacher can set a purpose to focus on an author’s use of language in order to enhance the contrastive analysis and cognate activities discussed in the previous section, or it some other area such as figurative language or aesthetic appreciation. Close reading can also involve different kinds of annotation and partner talk.

The Three Reads Problem Solving Routine:

⚫Read the problem stem three times, each time asking a different question:

⚫First Read: What is this situation about?

⚫Second Read: What are the quantities in this situation?

⚫Third Read: What are all the possible mathematical questions we could ask of this situation? Draw a diagram of the problem. Debrief each question with student-to-student discourse

ROARS Teacher / Staff Member: Refocus on Our Lyon Students

The ROARS Teacher / Staff Member goes beyond believing that all children are capable of learning, especially our most vulnerable populations of students such as our DL and / EL students.

The ROARS Teacher / Staff Member needs to see all Lyon students as "our" students, meaning we all have a shared responsibility to support each other and every student be it in the hallways, the bathrooms, or in our offices - there are always opportunities to provide support, even if it is just a smile, a "hello," or a "how are you?"

The ROARS Teacher / Staff Member should be one who shares strategies and ideas for support freely, without the expectation of receiving something in return.

Page 35: Mary Lyon Mary Lyon LSC Meeting...2019/10/09  · Mary Lyon Mary Lyon LSC Meeting By Cliff Gabor, Principal Sept. 18, 2019 5:00 p.m. Network 3 CPS School “Sometimes the questions

How can staff/student relationships be improved?

Lesson Plans would be aligned with the gradual release of teacher responsibility (I do, We Do, and You Do).

This would include:

⚫ Objective of the day will be posted in all classrooms and for all subjects.

⚫ Focused Instruction (Overview / Direct Instruction for the objective of the day and modeling.)

⚫ Guided Instruction with collaborative learning. Here students interact with the objective while receiving instructional support. Teachers would clarify misconceptions in differentiated groups. Teacher also conducts a check for understanding.

⚫ Independent learning – students will exhibit their understanding and application of the objective.

Through this change over to student centered learning using the Gradual Release Method relationships between teacher and student can be strengthened.
