“Thus says the Lord: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come, without paying and

without cost, drink wine and milk!” Is 55: 1ff

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I find our first reading from the prophet Isaiah interes ng and thought provoking. The Lord invites those of us who are thirs ng to come and drink, those of us who are hungry to come and eat and what is most interes ng, there is no cost.

Firstly, we must figure out what it is that we thirst for? What is it that we have spent so much me, money, and energy on? Do we feel fulfilled, do we believe that we are who we are meant to be? I know these are deep and soul searching ques ons and I can hear many of you saying, ‘I don’t have me to bless myself let alone find the me to reflect on these theological/philosophical ques ons,’ but let us look at the second half of the reading:

“Why spend your money for what is not bread (that doesn’t nourish, or energize or fill you with hope); your wages for what fails to sa sfy (making you feel unappreciated, or taken advantage of)? Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat and rich food to enjoy. Pay a en on, come to me; listen, and your soul will live.”

God is acutely aware that if we spend all our me and energy on finding complete contentment and happiness in this world then we will be disappointed and o en disillusioned.

Jesus was very aware of this in our gospel reading for this weekend. Jesus was trying to come to terms with the death of his cousin, John the Bap st, who had just been beheaded. He and his disciples needed me alone, so they withdrew by boat to a lonely place. But the people knew where he was going and when Jesus arrived, they were wai ng for him. Rather than be angry or frustrated he took pity on them and healed their sick. You see, God has no anger or frustra on towards us but pity and only wishes to heal us. God determines the type of healing we need, it may be physical, emo onal, psychological, or spiritual. All we must do is ‘pay a en on, come to God and listen.’

In the feeding of the thousands Jesus recognised what the people’s needs were on that day and at that me; they were not le wan ng for anything. Jesus is very aware what our needs are on this day and at this me – do not be afraid to come to Jesus, his heart is filled with love and pity for us.

Catholic Charities News The Covid 19 pandemic has stressed Catholic Charities’ domestic violence and substance abuse counseling programs and greatly

increased the demand for assistance to meet basic needs. At the same time, this year, we had to cancel all live fundraising activities. Therefore, to help meet our financial challenge, we have scheduled a virtual gala.

Virtual Guardian Angel Benefit of Hope Event

You are invited to the Catholic Charities inaugural Guardian Angel Benefit of Hope virtual event on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. This fun and entertaining virtual fund raiser, hosted by comedian Joe Piscopo, will feature entertain-ment, a silent auction, basket raffles, giveaways and a Super 50/50 raffle. Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton, inspired by our Catholic faith, provides trauma–focused specialized counseling, addiction treatment, domestic violence services and help meet-ing basic needs for over 100,000 people each year, regardless of their religion. The celebration is an opportunity to hear stories of the transforming impact Catholic Charities makes on our community. There is no charge to attend the event but, we ask that you register at www.catholiccharitiestrenton.org/GABOH2020. Hope you can tune in.

Thank you for your support.

2020-2021 REGISTRATION As we look forward to the fall we must be conscious of what is happening in the world around us. Based on concerns for the health and safety of our families and the physical distancing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the Diocese of Trenton, I continue to monitor and watch for guidance. We will begin to contact families about registering for 2020-2021. If you are new to our program, please visit our website www.mmotcp.org under RE Registration for all pertinent information and our Registration Form. For our returning families you will be receiving an email about pickup times for the Registration Form. Coming this fall we will be updating our program series.

CLASS TO MASS will continue but all students are required to attend Mass after class.

VOLUNTEERS ARE ALWAYS NEEDED IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION! Please consider volunteering. We have a wonderful program for Catechists, Aides and Hall Monitors. The success of our program is dependent on the willingness of individuals to help out. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted and attend a “VIRTUS” Safe Child workshop before being allowed to volunteer. (Fingerprinting and VIRTUS information can be found on our RE website.) Volunteering is a rewarding experience to share your faith with our parish youth. High School and College age volunteers will excel this year since we will be going digital – this is right up their alley.

You have given us, O Lord, bread from heaven, endowed with all delights and sweetness in every taste. [Wisdom 16:20]

SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY (1786-1859) August 4 A busy pastor jokingly suggests the secret of John Vianney’s holiness: “He died seventeen years before telephones!” Call they didn’t, but visit they did, keeping Vianney eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Stories abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney’s first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with studies delayed him, prompting the rector’s apology to the bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!” The bishop, who could not know he was ordain-ing the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful attended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just outside the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me the way to Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the way to heaven.” To someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, “My child, it would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus’ disciple on earth.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION - DRIVE-TO INSTRUCTIONS • As a family, please watch the livestream Mass together in your home

• After Mass ends get in your car and come to the Church to receive Holy Communion (those receiving need to be at their own car window and not able to exit the car)

• There will be a Holy Communion station at each Church

• Before receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer Before Receiving Communion’ in the car together

• After receiving Holy Communion pray the ‘Prayer After Receiving Communion’ together in the car. (Prayers found on previous page.)

Holy Communion will be distributed 15 minutes after Mass has completed, thus giving you time to drive over to the respective Church. First and foremost I ask for your patience in all this - this is not like a concert where there are a limited number of tickets and one feels the need to sleep out all night to be in line with a chance of getting a ticket. There will be Holy Communion for all who want to receive and for whatever length of time it takes. Receiving Holy Communion at St Mary Church, Bordentown • Enter our parking lot off of Crosswicks Street nearest the Church, coming in the direction from

Route 130 or from the school. • Do not enter our parking lot coming from Farnsworth Ave as that could cause a backup of traffic at the

Church entrance - all other entrances will be closed off. • Please follow the directions of the stewards. Receiving Holy Communion at Holy Assumption, Roebling • Go to Parish Lane Road, the road running alongside the Church and the Charter School, leading to Holy

Assumption Cemetery. • Drive toward the Cemetery and a Holy Communion station will be in placed in the Cemetery. • Please follow the instructions of the stewards. *Please recite the ‘Prayer Before Communion’ together before receiving Communion. Once you receive, please have one member of the family recite the ‘Prayer After Communion’ as you leave the parking lot. If you are alone, please pray the prayer when you are safely able to do so.
