Thirteenth Sunday in ordinary time The cost of discipleship and the paradox of the cross Have we really thought of seriously what does it entail to follow Christ or to be his disciples? What does it mean to be a Christian, at least as the name suggests? What Jesus is saying in our Gospel this Sunday is quite radical, or might be shocking to the Jews during his time. If we think and reflect it rather today, does it evoke any response at all? Jesus says, Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.This kind of demand is also made clear in other places where Jesus taught that anyone who wishes to come after him must deny or renounce ones self, take up the cross and follow him (Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23). Let us remember that this is Jesusinstruction to his disciples which the word discipleliterally means from the Greek translation- student or learner. Eventually, those who really wanted to follow him to the end would understand that as just as the teacher and master has walked the way of the cross, so they must too, to be true to their calling. The martyrs are the greatest testimony to these words of Jesus. A martyr, however, is not just the one who shed blood for the sake of the faith, but as the word originally means, is a witness, a witness to the words and deeds of Jesus - to his life. Why does Jesus claim an absolute loyalty, love and obedience? Is it not commanded in the Ten Commandments to honour ones father and mother? A Jewish listener during the time of Jesus would have known that theres only one person who demanded that kind of allegiance and love. It is the Lord himself. In Deuteronomy 6:4-6 states, Listen, Israel: the Lord our God is the one LORD. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart. This has been repeated by Jesus when asked by a scribe which is the first of all the commandments (Mark12:28-30; Matthew 22:36-37; Like 10:25-27). Jesus then is saying to his disciples to love him with that kind of supreme and radical love. Here, we are able to glimpse, contrary to the case against the divinity of Jesus, that although he is not explicitly declaring I am God”, that he does implicitly reveal that he is divine, because he is making a claim on the love of the disciples that only God himself could make. Going back to what Jesus demanded from his disciples, preferring him to anyone else and taking up ones cross is therefore a way of loving God, because he is God, the Second Person in the Holy Trinity. Whats the image of love in God? The cross is the ultimate proof of the love of God. Here we completely come face to face with the mystery of Gods love; that God is not arbitrary, demanding love from us as a kind of master-servant relationship. Because God is loveSt John says, he has to teach us by following Jesus what authentic love is. We have to learn the art of loving like Jesus. The cross is the symbol of God s love and rightly so Jesus has to make it clear for his disciples to carry it if they want to follow him, willing to lose their life for the sake of Christ and for the Gospel. What a paradox Jesus put before us when he said, anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. May we come to realise what true love is and receive the fullness of life in Jesus. Fr Regie

Thirteenth Sunday in ordinary time

The cost of discipleship and the paradox of the cross

Have we really thought of seriously what does it entail to follow Christ or to be his disciples? What does it mean to be a Christian, at least as the name suggests? What Jesus is saying in our Gospel this Sunday is quite radical, or might be shocking to the Jews during his time. If we think and reflect it rather today, does it evoke any response at all? Jesus says, “Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.” This kind of demand is also made clear in other places where Jesus taught that anyone who wishes to come after him must deny or renounce one’s self, take up the cross and follow him (Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23). Let us remember that this is Jesus’ instruction to his disciples which the word “disciple” literally means from the Greek translation- student or learner.

Is it not commanded in the Ten Commandments to honour one’s father and mother? A Jewish listener during the time of Jesus would have known that there’s only one person who demanded that kind of allegiance and love. It is the Lord himself. In Deuteronomy 6:4-6 states, “Listen, Israel: the Lord our God is the one LORD. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart.” This has been repeated by Jesus when asked by a scribe which is the first of all the commandments (Mark12:28-30; Matthew 22:36-37; Like 10:25-27). Jesus then is saying to his disciples to love him with that kind of supreme and radical love. Here, we are able to glimpse, contrary to the case against the divinity of Jesus, that although he is not explicitly declaring “I am God”, that he does implicitly reveal that he is divine, because he is making a claim on the love of the disciples that only God himself could make. Going back to what Jesus demanded from his disciples, preferring him to anyone else and taking up one’s cross is therefore a way of loving God, because he is God, the Second Person in the Holy Trinity. What’s the image of love in God?

The cross is the ultimate proof of the love of God. Here we completely come face to face with the mystery of God’s love; that God is not arbitrary, demanding love from us as a kind of master-servant relationship. Because “God is love” St John says, he has to teach us by following Jesus what authentic love is. We have to learn the art of loving like Jesus. The cross is the symbol of God’s love and rightly so Jesus has to make it clear for his disciples to carry it if they want to follow him, willing to lose their life for the sake of Christ and for the Gospel. What a paradox Jesus put before us when he said, “anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.” May we come to realise what true love is and receive the fullness of life in Jesus.

THE SACRAMENTAL ECONOMY

1076 The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 1The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the "dispensation of the mystery" the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church, "until he comes." 2 In this age of the Church Christ now lives and acts in and with his Church, in a new way appropriate to this new age. He acts through the sacraments in what the common Tradition of the East and the West calls "the sac-ramental economy"; this is the communication (or "dispensation") of the fruits of Christ's Paschal mystery in the celebration of the Church's "sacramental" liturgy. It is therefore important first to explain this "sacramental dispensation" (chapter one). The nature and essential features of liturgical celebration will then appear more clearly (chapter two).

APPEAL FROM THE PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE Dear fellow parishioners, I’m Michael Zerafa, MQOF Parish Finance Committee Chair. It’s wonderful that Sunday and weekday Masses have returned to our parish, albeit, limited to just 50 persons per Mass. Diane and I have been blessed to be able to attend Mass as readers. It was wonderful to receive communion once again and to see some familiar faces. The reason for my message today is, to provide you with an update with regards to parish finances:

Thank you to everyone who has continued to give through Planned Giving via credit card or bank account deduction during our time of closure. You have helped keep our parish running. Thank you also, to all of you who took up our call to change their Planned Giving from envelopes to automatic deduction from a credit card or bank account. It’s much appreciated and has also helped us immensely. For those of you who give regularly via envelopes, the parish team are busily preparing the envelopes for the incoming financial year. A big thank you to Len and Cita who have been assisting Sarah with this. Should you wish to start giving through Planned Giving, please contact the Parish Office on 9622 1125 for assistance with setting this up. The resumption of Masses means that you can now give at our churches. Whilst we can’t pass around the collection plates, you’ll find 2 buckets on a table at the main entrances to both churches – one marked First Collection, the other, Second Collection. Money placed in the First Collection bucket will go to the Diocese whilst, anything placed in the Second Collection bucket will go directly to the support of our parish. The buckets will be available at all Masses, including weekday Masses and, will be cleared after each Mass. Please come prepared to Mass after you’ve registered and, give generously if you can. And, don’t forget, our Tap and Go Terminals can be found in their usual spots at both churches. Each tap of these terminals will see $10 deducted from your credit card or bank account and transferred to our parish account. A second terminal will soon be installed at St Michael’s church. In a future bulletin, I’ll provide you with an update on what’s happening with the appeal we launched to raise funds to replace the Sound and Video Systems at St Patrick’s church, just prior to the pandemic as well as what’s happening with the installation of air conditioning and solar panels at both our churches too.

Other than that, if you wish to give to your parish, there are still three other ways you can donate: Transfer funds directly to our Parish Bank Account via your own Bank’s On-line-Banking portal The details of our Parish Bank Account are as follows: Name of Account: Blacktown Catholic Church Bank: Commonwealth Bank BSB Number: 067 950 Account Number: 00000677 Remitter Name: Your Surname and Initials By physical direct deposit in the bank—you need to request a copy of a deposit slip from the parish office before going to your bank. Transfer funds directly to our Parish Bank Account from your VISA or MasterCard using B-Point

To do this, go to the MQOF website, www.mqofblacktown.org.au, go to ‘Donate’ and then click on B-Point. Once there, select ‘1400163-Donation’ at the Biller Code field, type your Full Name, Phone Number and, at ‘Purpose of Payment’ type ‘Second Collection’ then, type in the amount you wish to contribute, and proceed with inputting your credit card details, then finally click ‘Proceed’.

On behalf of the Finance Committee and the Parish Clergy Team, we pray God’s Blessings on you, and your families as we ease out of restriction. As always, thanks for your ongoing support of your parish and we look forward to seeing increased numbers being able to attend Mass and seeing your faces. God Bless and keep safe,

Michael Zerafa

REGISTRATION / BOOKING IS NECESSARY FOR ALL MASSES FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONTACT TRACING

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Commencing from 1 July 2020, churches are allowed to have 1 person per 4 square metres. This will allow St Michael’s Church to accommodate 95 parishioners plus 5 ministers. St Patrick’s Church 295 parishioners and 5 ministers. Parishioners wishing to attend Mass can follow one of the links below or ring the parish office to register. Please note: registration is essential. Parishes must have the name and contact details of all those who attend any service. Those who have not registered cannot attend the service.

St. Michael's: www.mqofblacktown.org.au click on the tab and follow the prompts.

St. Patrick's: www.mqofblacktown.org.au click on the tab and follow the prompts.

We realise that there will be many people wanting to attend Mass but not enough places. We would request, therefore, that you register early to avoid missing out. Please also remember that there needs to be one registration per person. We also wish to remind everyone that the bishop’s dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains. So no one is obliged to attend Mass. Furthermore, if anyone is unwell we would ask them to take care of themselves and stay home.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

God bless you all,

The Parish Team

Communion to the sick is still restricted to Deacons and Priests.

Singing in the church:

Communal singing and chanting should not occur because of the high risk of transmission of the virus.

Parishioners are advised to follow the seating guidelines.

A reminder for parishioners you need to register before coming to Mass. Please arrive at least 5 minutes before Mass.
