Mary, Queen of the Holy RosaryOctober 2014

from the Pastor. . .

Vol. XXII, No. 2October 2014

PROUD PASTORAt age 62, I hate having the comprehension level of a 5 year old and the speaking ability of a 6 year old. Yet thatis the situation I find myself in with a growing number of Mary Queen parishioners. I am really not that goodwith the Spanish language. I can fool some folks when I read Spanish from a text because I am a good mimic. Ican deliver a reading or talk in Spanish with some passion. But, when it comes to conversation, my true lack offluency in the language quickly reveals itself.

Because of my inability to hold my own in the Spanish language, I am hesitant to engage our Spanish-speakingparishioners in conversation. They deserve a pastor who can communicate fully with them, and I am obviouslyinadequate in that area. I feel like a failure. And yet I know it is important for me to be present with myparishioners, whatever language they speak. But my pride sure gets in the way, and leads me to simply be there, smile, give a greeting and then get out of the situation before my lack of language skills reveals me as inadequatefor deep conversation. As a result, I don't really know them.

My pride indeed keeps me from being the pastor this parish needs. Even if I don't know the Spanish vocabulary,I could hold my own in a real conversation if I were humble enough to ask for help, and felt free enough to sharemy heart even if I couldn't say all the right words with the proper grammar. I have real trouble with being thatvulnerable. This is a rich insight for me that is leading me to battle against my pride. It is a great opportunity togrow in holiness and love. And God will win that battle in me. This is one of the great gifts that having Spanish-speaking parishioners is giving me.

This challenge and insight and growth has come to me as I join with the parish staff, the Parish Pastoral Council, and the leaders among our Spanish-speaking parishioners in learning about best practices in "shared parishes".Shared parishes are parish communities in which two or more languages or cultural contexts are an integral partof the life and mission of a particular parish. Although this process is really stretching me, I am so thankful forit and curious about what new discoveries are in store. How about you?

Father Dan

MQHR – Financial News Notes Oct. 2014Walter Leachman, Business Mgr.

Thanks to all the Fall Festival Committee and marvelous volunteers for a great EVENT on September 12-13.Laura Soldato amazed me with how she juggled her beautiful young family and got all the FestivalCommittee to work together to pull this off in such a great fashion this year. Thanks for the dedicated effortsand thanks for all the prayers! The weather turned out great! Moving it up from October to September madefor a warmer Festival. THANKS TO ALL!!! The Festival Financial Summary will be published as soon as itis available...thanks Greg Baker and Brad West. A special thanks to David Moses and all his crew ofvolunteers for the construction and grounds. The Panther Pride raffles produced nearly $6,000 in revenue.Hopefully this year has produced a wonderful net profit. We are hoping to have an overall net profit of$62,000! The Festival is not just a fundraiser for the parish/school, but it is a wonderful event that builds ourcommunity both personally and spiritually. Congratulations to David Perry on winning the $10,000 grandraffle, Becky Brown on winning the second prize of $3,000, Monica McGinnis on winning the third prize of$1,000, and to Alexandria Rankin who won the Early Bird drawing of $500. It takes everyone to make thiswork...Thanks!

The Stewardship of Treasure pledge weekend will be held on November 8-9, and follow up on Nov 15-16.If you are interested in electronic giving, please call me at 278-7432, or visit our website atwww.cdlex.org/maryqueen and go to the ministries tab then the stewardship tab and submit the form andvoided check. If you gave in 2014, we will need to get confirmation to continue in 2015. Also, you maysubmit donations through our website by clicking the "Electronic Giving" button and follow the instructions. Many people are donating through their respective banking bill pay systems. THANKS!

At this time, Mary Queen does not have an operational line of credit balance. We were able to put aside$239,351.26 during last fiscal year to pay the Church Diocesan assessment on 9/1/14. The school is in anoperational positive cash flow position for the time being and paid the School Diocesan assessment of$132,666.55 on 9/1/14. We will closely monitor the cash flow but expect to have to borrow for schooloperations throughout the year.

Our 2014 annual report to the parishioners was provided to the parishioners on the website, through emailsand in the newsletter at the first of September. The report includes the financial pie charts and summaries anda letter from the Parish Finance Council Chair, Scott King.

The principal payments made on the Education Life Center were $158,340. The priest house was paid off inthe amount of $274,778. We currently owe $5,220,023 on the bond.

The bond refinancing process is under way. This has been done only once (2009) since the original bond wasissued in 2004. There is a refinance every five years. The committee is represented by Fr. Dan, Becky Brown,Frank Hsu, Dan Bork, Scott King, Michael Carpenter, Rob Twist and myself. The refinancing this Decemberis expected to be very troubling. There have been some obstacles in the process to say the least. Moreinformation will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

Please use your Crossroads envelope to donate for the cost/use of the Diocesan newspaper. MQ is expectedto get a bill est. of $6,435. The envelopes for your offering to offset the cost of Crossroads were in the mostrecent envelope packet. The shortfall will need to be made up through the offertory. The recommendedamount is $15 per family who receives Crossroads. Have you donated your share yet? We have received lessthan $2,000.

Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary is blessed in so many ways. Thanks for all you do and God bless you. KeepMary Queen parish in your prayers. Walter

As Catholics we do funerals well, but just think about these facts:

Planning for a Wedding - 1 Year Planning for a baby - 9 months

Planning for a funeral and tribute? - 2 days We spend a year planning our wedding, 9 months planning for a baby - but only 2 days are spent planning a funeral and tribute to celebrate your life or the life of a loved one. Let’s learn together how to Have the Talk of a Lifetime and how it can benefit each of us personally, our families and our parish. Please join us for an informational meeting about celebrating your life and the decisions that must be made when you or a loved one dies.

Christ Renews His ParishWomen’s Retreat

January 31- February 1, 2015Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) is a process designed to bring members of a parishtogether in Christ. CRHP is an effective spiritual renewal process, which calls together themembers of the parish, in order to experience personal conversion and Christiancommunity in the environment of our own parish.

Christ Renews His Parish is for anyone seeking spiritual renewal, desiring to build up the Body of Christ andgain a deeper sense of purpose within the MQHR community.

Come prepared to have fun and renew your heart. The process is centered on reflections by team members.Time will be given for individual reflection, small group discussion and activities. You will be free to share asmuch or as little as you are comfortable.

You and your needs will always be respected. It is a great opportunity to respond to Christ’s call to a closerand deeper relationship with him. It is a great way to meet other women of MQHR and form special friendships.

This overnight retreat is open to all MQHR women 21 years and older. If you feel that Christ, through theHoly Spirit is calling you – COME and be REFRESHED!

If you have questions or would like to register, please contact: Mary Kemper 859-259-0706 Sara DeMuth 859-321-4797Nancy Fister 859-224-8509

In January of this year, as I was filling in my 2014 calendar with important dates, I decided to add “ChristRenews His Parish Retreat on February 8-9 at MQHR”. Even though I had heard wonderful things about CRHP,my hesitation about attending the retreat lingered all through the month of January. A very dear friendapproached me at the end of January and asked if I had ever considered attending the retreat? I replied that Ihad but still had concerns about it. The week of the retreat, she called several times trying to persuade me tocome. The night before the retreat I called to tell her I had decided not to come because I had a sinus infectioncoming on, and I needed my sleep. But in the back of my mind, I still felt a “Holy Nudge” to attend. We endedthe conversation that I would text her in the morning if I changed my mind. Well, Saturday morning came and Isent her a text to say I had changed my mind and I would be there at 8 a.m.

The retreat was just what I needed! It gave me time away from all the demands at home and work to reflectand grow in my relationship with God through prayer, reflections, small group discussion, activities, deliciousmeals, and a warm and welcoming environment. It was very down to earth and yet very uplifting. It was verysimple and led by MQHR women who had experienced a CRHP retreat in the past. The retreat was verypeaceful and calming, and it was exactly where God wanted me to be on that cold snowy weekend in February.

I pray you will also consider attending the upcoming Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary CRHP retreat onJanuary 31-February 1, 2015.

Blessings, Nancy Fister

BUILDThis past month BUILD team members have beenhaving house meetings where we are listening to thecommunity concerns of MQers. We have heard suchissues as low wages, crime in our neighborhoods, andmental illness treated as a crime instead of an illness. We took what we have heard to the BUILD teammeeting and narrowed the issues to the top 3 to bevoted on at the Community Problems Assembly onMonday, Oct. 27, 7 PM at Consolidated BaptistChurch. Everyone who attends will get a vote todecide on the problem to address this year. Last yearShiloh Baptist brought 65 people and all voted forcrime and drugs, enough to make that the issue lastyear. There is certainly power in numbers! Plan to bea part of doing justice and building the Kingdom ofGod here in Lexington. Come to the CommunityProblems Assembly Oct. 27. We’ll carpool from MQat 6:00.
