When they saw this, they made known the message that had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazed by what
had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting
on them in her heart. - Lk 2:17-19
* May God move us to act with tenderness and compassion for the most vulnerable; we pray to the Lord: * For parents who receive a difficult prenatal diagnosis: May they be comforted by the assurance of God’s loving plan for their child’s life; we pray to the Lord: * For expectant mothers and fathers who are afraid: May God provide for their every need and bless them with peace; we pray to the Lord: * For all Christians: May the light of Jesus’ birth enflame our hearts to welcome and protect the gift of each person’s life; we pray to the Lord: 2

The Prayer Before Mass Come Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my family, friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. Quiet the thoughts and distractions that will keep me from worship. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my ears to hear God’s Word. Open my eyes to the mystery of the Eucharist. Open my heart to receive Jesus with love. May I go forth strengthened to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Reflection
"And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." Supernatural communication was nothing new for Mary. The angel Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her when she agreed to bear God's Son. Her husband Joseph also had a kind of divine intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin Elizabeth had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was "the mother
of my Lord" (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthy shepherds appears at her door with a message from heaven: that the Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the
authenticity of their message. She took the words to heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all. What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God, did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Sometimes, He revealed Himself to them in order to reveal Himself to her. And God does the same with us. It's easy to daydream about having our own personal revelation from God, to hear His voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn't the standard pattern of God's operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God's voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seeking to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others.

A Biblical reason for wanting to spend One Hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament:
When you look upon the Sacred Host, you look upon Jesus, the Son of God.
“ Indeed, this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day.” — John 6:40
New Hours! Wednesday 7am until Friday 7am
Starting on January 18, 2017, if all slots are filled.
Call to reserve your preferred hour or sign up at the back of Church.
…. we NEED you!
MARRIAGE MINISTRY NEWS One of the top factors in the breakup of most marriages is financial discord. A high percentage of marriages that fail do so because of financial problems. And this kind of financial turmoil is no less of a problem in many Catholic marriages. Come hear our next guest speaker tells us why “Money Matters in Marriage” on Saturday, January 14, 7pm – 8:30pm in the Carpet Room of the church. Babysitting will be provided. Call Denise Bentley 300-8560 and let her know how many children you will be bringing.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL BLESSING, TO BLESS STUDENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS:
Good and gracious God, we thank you for the wonders of your world and the opportunity to learn about you and your creation. Just as Jesus stayed in the Temple, in the midst of the teachers, so too we ask you to bless these young people as they begin their studies, learning from wise men and women who are their mentors and teachers. Bless both teacher and student as they continue to learn and grow to the betterment of themselves and our community. We ask this blessing in the name of the great teacher, Jesus Christ, our Lord and brother. Amen.
Welcome to our New Families! If you have joined our parish in
October, November, December, you’re invited to a light luncheon following the 11am Mass NEXT Sunday, Jan. 8th. RSVP to Rachael at 765-4745.

Questions and Answers:
Q: January 1st, New Year's Day, has a number of liturgical names celebrating a variety of events. Could you explain?
A: January 1st, New Year's Day, celebrates newness. Exactly eight days after Christmas, traditionally it celebrates Mary as the Mother of God. The Greek word for Mary's motherhood is Theotokos, meaning "God-bearer." Becoming official church teaching at the Council of Ephesus in 381, this is one of the most ancient and important titles given to Mary. Chapter VIII of the Vatican II document, Lumen Gentium, which addresses Mary's role in Christian life, refers to her by that title no less than twelve times.
Eight days after the birth of a Jewish male, circumcision was demanded by Jewish law. January 1st also commemorates the circumcision of Jesus. The Gospel reading for the day from Luke recounts the shepherds' visit, the completion of the eight days leading to circumcision, and naming the baby Jesus, according to the angel's direction previous to His conception.
Beginning in 1967, Pope Paul VI requested that this day be set aside as a day of prayer for world peace. For over forty years, popes have issued a message encouraging prayer as well as action toward the establishment of world peace.
If we used today to be as loving to others as mothers are to their children, this might be the year that peace becomes a reality. That reality may move us all to renew our commitment to God symbolized by Jesus' circumcision. So maybe these various celebrations do link together. Happy New Year!
