Recently, Maryborough State High School boys and girlshockey teams participated in the All Schools Hockey. A stormhalted play on the second day for an hour, otherwise the dayswere hot and sunny.

Students played in very wet conditions but fought to the veryend of the day. The girls played very well, having a lot of fun, gaining experience with a number of players at their first everhockey carnival. The final score was close in a number of theirgames, finishing eighth in Division 2 and 16th overall.

The boys were almost in the same position as the girls withone senior on their team. The way these two teams played andrepresented their school was exemplary. The boys finished 11thoverall. The highlight for the boys was on the second day. Dueto rain, many games went down to penalty strokes to determinematch winners. The boys went up against Kirwan, who playedin the final, losing in the second round with the score 5-6.

Players stepped up and were outstanding, with rookies keepingtheir composure. Our goalies played exceptionally throughoutthe three days, with diving, stick and glove saves. Every player, gave it their best. Great sportsmanship and team work! Greatrepresentation of our school!

smart in their formal school uniform and we received manycompliments on how impressive our uniform looked.

Our Year 9/10 team did make it through to the finals. JacksonMorris, Sophia McPhee and Declan Dwyer-Vary tied withAldridge State High School and secured a place in the finals.

Saturday 21 October, our Year 9/10 team again braved the wetconditions to compete in the finals. Amanda Hanna joined theteam as a replacement for Jackson who was unavailable. Theteam worked well and spelt many difficult words throughout thefinal. Unfortunately they were defeated by one point in a veryclose contest.

The students enjoyed the experience and are keen to enteragain in 2018, confident that they will be victorious.

Thank you to the family, staff and friends who attended theSpelling Bee and to the students for their great team spirit andenthusiasm. I look forward to working with the teams next yearand encourage others to enter as well.

Technology News – Formula StudentsThroughout the year students from Maryborough State HighSchool, Aldridge State High School and St Mary’s College havebeen enrolled in the Formula Student Program at the TradeTraining Centre.

The students fabricated all the components, then worked asa team to assemble the Lemans style prototype race car. Wethen travelled to Lakeside Raceway on Saturday, 21 October,to race our vehicle against 12 other cars that had been builtthroughout South East Queensland.

Our students overcame many hurdles, including fuel supplyissues and drive train dramas. They also finished their vehicletwo months earlier than other teams, in order to showcasetheir work at the Technology Challenge here in Maryborough inSeptember.

Not only was our car amongst the fastest on track and one ofthe last four running, our team gave up their car to two otherteams who were knocked out due to mechanical failure. Ourunofficial team leader, Max Ward, rallied to the cause and theteam gave them the use of our car to allow their students anopportunity to compete.

I would like to thank all of our sponsors; B&H Designs, EarlesPaints and Klein Signs; for their continuous support of ourstudents. I would also like to send out a huge thanks to all of theparent helpers and supporters who travelled to Brisbane for theevent. In particular a special thank you to Mr & Mrs Youngberryfor their tremendous support, providing a car trailer, box trailer,BBQ and gazebos for the team!

Paul TraceyTeacher

More Technology NewsThe formula student class went to Lakeside Raceway to timetrial the car that they have built. The weather was miserable andthe rain did not let off all day. This did not stop the studentsfrom having an unforgettable time. They all had a turn in racingthe car around the circuit in the wet and tried to keep it on thetrack. Sportsmanship came to the forefront when they all had aturn in the car, they then offered our car to the other school’sstudents who had not driven around the track because theircars had issues that stopped them from participating.

Big thank you to the parents for supporting this trip and thestudents. Setting up on the hill and providing a dry place tohave lunch.

The Construction classes have almost finished the table andchairs to go under the shade structures in front of Q Block. Thefurnishing class are currently installing the new kitchens in Cblock and R block.
