How does your story begin?MARYGROVE COLLEGEWhat will history say about you?

Located on the northwest side of Detroit, our 53-acre wooded

campus is a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city – but close

enough to benefit from all the metropolis offers.

This is where you will:

expand your mind

make best friends

prepare for the future

and find your true passion.

MARYGROVE COLLEGE

When you step onto Marygrove’s campus, what do you feel? Is this a place that will inspire you to grow? To take charge of your life? We think it will, as it has for many before you. A fire of convictionHollywood seldom portrays what REAL rebels look like. The people who change the world are rarely the flashy bad boys, but rather the quiet girl who would not give up her seat on the bus. Our founders, the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), are such people.

In 1905, the founding year of the college, the IHMs opened a school for girls when there was no such thing as a woman’s right to education. And the world changed.Marygrove then enrolled African-American students despite a storm of national controversy. And the world changed. And today, Marygrove stays firmly rooted in the city of Detroit despite suggestions we relocate. And the city is making a comeback.

At Marygrove, we practice what we preach. True leadership is not just about your personal progress – it’s about the progress you can make happen for the world around you.

This is where you come inWhere does your potential lie? Do you know? It’s okay if you don’t. How can you possibly know what you are truly passionate about unless you experience it for yourself – not from the Internet, not from your parents, you. That is why we are here. It is our job to provide you the support and the tools of critical thinking so that you can find your path. Whether it be in the sciences, performing arts or as a grade school teacher, we will help you discover what truly drives you and how your passion can become your profession.

Marygrove has found its calling: it is to help you find yours. So that you can bring positive change to the world.

Theresa Maxis Duchemin, IHM, our founding sister and a woman of color.

MAKING COLLEGE AFFORDABLEWith the high cost of education, many highly qualified students simply cannot afford college. This is a great concern to Marygrove, and as a result, we have developed a financial assistance program that makes pursuing an education at Marygrove very affordable – in fact, many students qualify for scholarship and grant packages that cover between 60–100% of tuition costs.

SCHOLARSHIPS We offer a wide variety of scholarships, including non-competitive scholarships that do not require minimum SAT scores or even a separate scholarship application, as well as athletic and talent scholarships. Additional financial aid, work-study programs, grants, loans and flexible payment options are plentiful.

Be sure to talk with a Marygrove financial advisor to see if you qualify for a scholarship or grant aid package – they might suggest a scholarship you didn’t know about, and will even help you with your forms!

Call (313) 927-1240 to speak to a financial advisor, or email [email protected].

The Honors Program at Marygrove College challenges highly motivated, academically talented students – both in and out of the classroom. Designed to provide increased opportunities for extended inquiry, independent research and presentation, the program helps prepare students for graduate school or the global workforce, as well as greatly enriching the college experience.

Students in the program:• Enjoy special social and cultural activities outside the classroom• Earn special Honors recognition on transcripts and at graduation• Have special privileges in the Marygrove Library• Join professional organizations and present their research

at professional conferences• Work closely with professors and nationally known visitors to campus

HONORS PROGRAM

BUILDING A SOLID FOUNDATION OF KNOWLEDGEThere is a lot of misinformation about what a liberal arts college can offer its graduates. After all, you may study topics such as philosophy one day, and be asked to perform a science experiment the next.

The truth of the matter is a liberal arts student has an enormous advantage over the mainstream student. Why? In the real world, your life will require more skills than just your chosen major: the artist with knowledge about economics goes a lot further than one whose knowledge stops with their palette. Therefore, the core of required courses at Marygrove spans a wide range of subjects that not only provide a strong educational foundation, but contribute to the development of lifelong career skills. Remember, your future is not static, it changes and evolves as you do. What you choose to do after graduation may be 180 degrees from what you will do at 35.

Once the core foundation is in place, you’ll move toward a specific area of study. This gift of time allows you to explore what interests you. Perhaps you want to be a doctor, teacher, social worker or entrepreneur. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of contributing to the arts. Our tailored programs ensure that wherever you want to go, we have a path to take you there.

NO SITTING IN THE BACK AT MARYGROVEWe’ve all known students who skate through class by keeping their head down and sitting in the back, squeaking by but learning little. Now imagine the class size is in the hundreds – you can see how most seats would be “back seats.” Not at Marygrove.

Here, all classes are taught by teaching faculty (not teaching assistants) and our average class size is just 15 students. Our professors will know your name. They will know how you did on your last test. And if you are struggling, they will do their best to present you information in a way you understand.

Commitment, compassion and competency – our Marygrove mission in action.

ACADEMICS

“ Dr. Rashid is out of the ordinary, and has a lot of enthusiasm – I like someone that can hold my interest.”

ANTHONY BUTLER, STUDENT

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIESAt Marygrove, international travel and studies abroad will bring you new opportunities and life-changing experiences. Even if you’ve never traveled before, Marygrove will help make the world your classroom.

• First-year students ease into interna-tional travel by visiting our neighbor, Canada, during classes and projects.

• Students later have opportunities for 10- to 14-day overseas trips as part of their coursework. For example, students in an environmental science class might travel to the Galápagos Islands. Social work students might visit Ghana to help with a service project. Many fascinatingoverseas learning opportunities are available. In recent years, Marygrove students have traveled together to China, Ghana, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Bulgaria and Peru.

After completing a short-term overseas study program, many students choose to live and study abroad for an entire semester. Many programs of study at Marygrove offer semester-long study abroad opportunities.

REAL-WORLD IMMERSION Marygrove students don’t just learn in the classroom, they are engaged in the community, learning in real-world situations. This “hands- on” teaching approach prepares students in ways theories and books can’t, and professors often figure the city of Detroit into lesson plans and internships. For example:

Education – Child Development students create family plans to enhance development of children in local Head Start programs.

Professional Studies – Social Work students conduct research and provide services to vulnerable groups in the community. Businessstudents design marketing plans for real companies to market real products around the globe. Computer Information Systems students develop websites for local non-profits.

Visual and Performing Arts – Graphic Design students develop materials used by non-profit organizations in southeastern Michigan. Music and Dance students perform at local events.

Arts and Sciences – Forensic Science majors study real-world crimes and often intern with local law enforcement agencies. History students develop interpretive materials used in the Detroit Historical Museum. Biology and Environmental Science majors participate in major wetlands restoration projects.

Our professors and instructors care about your academic interests and career ambitions. You’ll work closely with faculty members in the classroom as well as partner on meaningful community engagement projects. Here’s one such example:

Diane McMillan – Social Work Associate Professor Diane McMillan developed a Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC) program in partnership with Marygrove’s Division of Continuing Education and Professional Development, the Department of Social Work and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM). Many DRMM clients, most in addiction recovery themselves, have completed the intense, six-month program and are now helping others who struggle with addictions. “We are reaching beyond the gates of our beautiful college,” she said. “That’s always been Marygrove’s mission and it’s very rewarding.”

Marygrove Faculty

WORKING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICEAt Marygrove, we’re focused on eliminating the causes of injustice in our society. Professors in every field of study find creative ways to bring social justice lessons into the coursework. In an economics class, you might learn about the economic causes of poverty. In a business class, you might study social entrepreneurship and corporations that are concerned with ethics and the environment as well as financial performance. Your studies at Marygrove will equip you to work for social justice – no matter what career path you choose.

THE MARYGROVE MUSTANG ATHLETIC PROGRAMWhether your “place” is the basketball court, volleyball court, the track or on the soccer field, Marygrove College wants to prepare you to lead.

We teach our student-athletes personal responsibility, professionalism and leadership. It’s an environment of caring and concern for all members of the campus community as well as the global village in which we live.

As part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Marygrove College Mustang Athletic Program is committed to supporting and nurturing what we believe should be the true foundation of any athletic program – character and leadership development.

Our coaches teach within the five core values of the NAIA’s Champions of Character Program: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship. In fact, our Mustang Athletic Program is working toward becoming a Champions of Character Program Center for our region. This center will be a resource for on- and off-campus groups to learn about the benefits of character and leadership development.

Marygrove’s student-athletes have the rare opportunity of receiving personal attention in both academics and athletics from one of the finest Liberal Arts colleges in Michigan. As an athlete, you will receive plenty of one-on-one time with coaches, and the support of Marygrove’s faculty, staff and fans! As a student, you will receive a superb education and personalized attention, and you’ll graduate with the skills necessary to take you anywhere you want to go with your career.

THE MARYGROVE GOLF PRACTICE FACILITYMarygrove College, partnering with Midnight Golf and world-renowned golf course designer Tom Doak, built a state-of-the-art golf practice course for urban youth on its campus. By bringing golf back to the city, this facility allows people in the community to experience the joy of the game who would not normally have the opportunity or financial capability to do so. When asked why the College undertook the golf project, Dr. David Fike, President of Marygrove College, said: “I reflect on the College’s history of demonstrating new ways of thinking and behaving and it causes me to reverse the question: why wouldn’t Marygrove undertake a project that demonstrates how a sport, often perceived as elitist and environmentally unfriendly, can be enhanced with a focus on sustainability and accessibility?”

TOP-NOTCH COMPETITION Marygrove’s varsity teams compete against the best college programs in the Midwest. The Mustang teams get an oppor-tunity to compete for national championships as a member of both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPSAthletic scholarships are now offered in addition to academic merit scholarships. While merit scholarships are based on the respective student-athlete’s high school and/or previous college academic records, athletic scholarships are based on athletic performance.

To find out more about joining Marygrove’s athletic program: Email [email protected], or go to www.marygrovemustangs.com or call (313) 927-1391.

Brittany Mack Political Science

and Business double major

What brought you to Marygrove?A couple of counselors

took us on a tour. I wasn’t even looking at

Marygrove because I was always told it was a teachers’

school or a music and dance school. And then Admissions called me and told me they were giving me a full ride. The rest is history.

Have you had an internship? My internship was at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit. I worked in the Forfeiture Department.

It was my job to organize and read through the police reports, set up files, and deal with the people when they came to reclaim their car. I sat down with them when they met with the prosecutor and attended the court case.

I met people from everywhere who had to come and get their cars – it really teaches you to never let anyone drive your car!

Any advice for incoming students?Don’t go with a school everyone chooses. Don’t go just because your mom went. Make sure you go to a school that fits you. Also, just have fun and take classes that you would never take regularly. Take piano if you would never take piano! Take advantage of all your opportunities!!

Anthony Butler Chemistry

What brought you to Marygrove? The reason I came was the classroom size. Seemed like a good atmosphere because everyone knew each other.

What is your major?I started off as Pre-Dental and switched over to Chemistry, because it turns out that I do better in chemistry than biology. I was actually named one of the outstanding chemistry students and received an award.

Are you involved in sports?Yes, I am leaving Sunday for a training camp in cross country. I like being part of a team. It is time-consuming managing school and track though. I am captain of the cross country team, so I get to meet the new people coming in and give them input.

What do you think of residence life?So far it has been a great experience living in the residence halls.

Some of my best memories are from moving into and out of the residence hall. Moving in, you get to meet a lot of new people so you can really be yourself since you don’t know any of them. And then on the last day, there is a lot of free time and saying last goodbyes for the summer.

You have worked hard to get to this point. The time has come. You are ready. What will history say about you?

We can’t wait to find out!

IN THEIR OWN WORDS …

I like living with my friends. If you need help, there is usually someone across the hall that you can get help from.

Only a few of us were actually undergrads, all the others there were law students!

Sholanda Presbery Forensic Science and Chemistry double major

Were you interested in forensics before coming to Marygrove?I was always into science and math, and I saw that Marygrove had Forensic Science.

So when I came here, I took some classes to see if I would like it. It was just a couple

more classes to get the chem major so I decided to get the double major.

Are you planning any internships or study abroad experiences?I’m applying for an internship with the FBI. I think that would be a really

cool career path.

I plan on going to Barcelona or China. I always liked to travel, I just want to go

to different places – not just in-state but out of the country.

Any advice for incoming students?I would tell them be prepared and do their research. Do the tours and pick a school that is really right for you. You should see yourself growing there and really loving it.

You think you can wait until the last minute and you can’t. Even if you are a sophomore in high school, get started. People don’t understand that high scores on your ACT and a good GPA means a scholarship for you.

I looked around and Marygrove was one of the only schools that had Forensic Science as a bachelor’s, not a master’s degree.
